Sony STR-DN1080 7.2 Channel AV Receiver AU $857 + $138.18 Delivery (US Stock, Stepdown Transformer Required) @ Ubuy

40

Been looking for one of these to go with my recent Dali Zensor 3 speaker purchase.

None of these popped up during the recent Ebay 20% off deal (apparently they were out of stock across Australia at the time).

From the wording & format of the site, it is not clear if this is Australian stock or not, but I assume it is not (despite the Australian flag appearing in the corner, and the section stating it is 'in stock').

I see Kogan have these for considerably more, as do JB Hifi and the like.

Haven't purchased one of these yet - want to run it past the Ozbargain community first.

Good deal, I paid $1300 from JBHIFI last year for this model.

    Do it.
I paid 1100 last year too. Good unit, though had the odd sync issue with my Sony Android TV (fixed after resets)

  • Will you need a step down transformer for it to work as per the foot note on the page. Which is not only add to the cost but affect the aesthetics?

  • Receiver bargains are rare on OzBargain, though TVs are common. Are people just using the low quality built-in TV speakers, or sound bars?

    Avoid.. $857 + $140 shipping + $100 step down transformer.

Definitely not a bargain due to USA power plug requirement.

  • Great receiver! I actually just picked up the Sony Atmos speakers in the recent Click Frenzy sale for like $130. Fantastic addition to my DALI Concept range.

Unfortunately as others have mentioned, not a good deal considering the shipping and transformer requirements. Would wait until JB does their next "30% off sound" sale. That's when I got mine about a year ago. Only paid around $900 for it.

  • Just wanted to also add my vote that this is a very nice receiver. Got it for about $1000 when it was on special at JB last year in Jan.

I use it for a lot of 2 channel listening, and despite people saying AVRs are terrible for such listening, this Sony excels (IMO). Very neutral sound, if that's what your looking for. For me, based on sound quality alone, it is superior to an older Denon unit I had (and I consider Denon amps to notch).

    • By 2 channel listening, you mean listening to say music in stereo with only a pair of speakers active?

I only have 2 speakers (+ 2 new speakers). Thinking maybe connected both sets up, but just in a stereo configuration at this stage. (I see on the back there is speaker A, and speaker B ports).

      • Yeah listening to music (turntable, squeezebox touch, FLAC files, etc.) in stereo - 2 speaker set-up.

  • Since I originally posted this, both Kogan & Dick Smith (Kogan), have these for $999 (Australian stock), with the possibility of getting free freight via their Kogan first program (30 day free trial).

I find it more useful having a single thread, rather than multiple threads however.

    • This receiver is now $979.30 at JB. Like I said in my last comment - they frequently have 30% off sales :)
