Pricematch at HN and use Amex offer makes it 493 ??
    Just a thought

  • Will it stop working when main power off? Is there any solution like backup power(UPS) for home security cameras system? As most of main switch boxes are outside house/fence, if main switch been off, security cameras getting useless.

    • +2

put your modem , router on UPS. And I also remember arlo support local sd card, but not sure it’s arlo2

    • Curious as well, I know you can plug this to power source, if the power is cutoff, will the camera continue to run using the battery?

      • +1

Yes, it still works using battery. But without internet connection, real time notice cannot be sent to phone app. If the cameras are broken or stolen, there is no evidence can be saved.

        • +1

Great thank you for confirming, just need to add UPS attached to router, modem and base station for backup.

      • Main concern when away is NBN always resetting needing a toothpick physical box reset not blackouts . All cams are down doing this happening . I’m looking at backup for that which is a pain in the a$$.

          1. Buy a 4G modem, such as Huawei B525 or similar. Buy data sim from Vodafone $50/half year or other cheap sims. Keep your security system separately from main NBN network.
          2. Cheaper solution. If your modem/router supports 4G USB modem plug in, you may save money from buying a wifi 4G modem.
          3. Cheapest, buy a pocket 4G wifi. But it may not enough to cover your home as limited wifi range.
  • How long the batteries last and how long do they take to charge

    • I have the Arlo Pro (not 2). It depends how often the camera is active recording video.

For me, the back camera last 7 months and the front camera lasts 2 months (stupid cat!). It takes couple hours to charge the battery. There is solar panel accessory which i'm considering for the front camera.

Note about the back camera, I use geofencing and scheduling to turn it off if we're home during the day. And turn it on if we're sleeping or away from home.

  • A quick ozb search shows historal price low is around $440

I think this one is the 720p version, not full 1080p HD.

      • Both Pro 2.
        Original "Pro" series = 720p, newer "Pro 2" series = 1080p.

  • Sorry I don’t know much about this device. Is there any monthly fees for remote viewing on mobile? Thanks

    • +2

You get 7 days rolling cloud storage included on the free plan.
No fees for remote live view.

      • Thanks

You can also connect a HDD and keep your recordings for longer if you want.

          • @whitey: Wht about battery life? Is that annoying to recharge battery every 3-4 months and reposition camera agin?

            • +1

@georgev: Not really. It takes almost 1-2 hours for the battery to be fully charged and another 5 mins per camera to reposition them. I have been using these for almost 1.5 years and overall happy. They have certain shortcomings but overall the ease of use + no installation is a major advantage over the hard-wired cameras.

            • +1

@georgev: Depends where you put them and how much recording you want it to do…. Mine are under the eaves and a 1 min job to walk outside, grab them and plug them in to charge…

            • +2

@georgev: For in the house I have them on the magnetic mounts so it's easy to grab and move or charge.
I have it on geofencing + schedule to only record when I'm not home or when we're asleep so they last quite a while.

For outside the house I have them on the outdoor screw mounts which is a bit more annoying but they're in low traffic areas so I can deal with the hassle of recharging them every 4-5 months.

For my driveway and front yard (very high traffic area) I use the Arlo solar panel to extend battery life. In summer it would stay topped up at 90-100% each day but now with cloudy weather and rain it's maybe lasting around a month.
Before I had the solar panel, it would last only a week max. It gets a workout of around 80-100+ recordings there a day.

              • @unco: Thanks a lot for the comments. So it’s not continuous recording? Only record when it detects motion ?

                • +1

                  @georgev: Correct, motion activated.

If you're wanting continuous recording, you're better off looking for a hardwired system rather than battery.

                  • @unco: Though the Pro 2 can do what they call "look back" so I think it effectively does continuous recording but only when plugged into a power source.. so when it detects motion, it stores the footage from 3 seconds before the motion was detected… I am not sure how well it works and is basically designed for internal use where the camera is connected to a power source.

  • Hey guys
Can anyone recommend a 2x camera unit with NVR box for POE with decent night vision ? I have existing setup ready for POE looking for an upgrade . Thanks
