  • Anyone use the subscription service, or recommend an alternative?

    • I think it can use kodi or Plex…

    • +1

I have the Quattro and the HDHomerun DVR Service, plus a Plex Pass, which I use with the Nvidia Shield.

I prefer Plex over the native HDHR app, as it's more user friendly and has a proper grid-style EPG, and has some nice features like the ability to remove commercials.

Saying that, we actually use Fetch TV throughout the house for FTA, with a single Mighty serving two Minis, as you can now stream live FTA from a Mighty to a Mini which is not connected to an antenna.

Also, Fetch has an inbuilt DLNA server, so you can access FTA recordings over the network using any half decent DLNA client.

This is becoming more and more redundant with people now using freeview app and catchup TV.

    • Yeah I remember really wanting this badly when it was new years ago, I think for around $400. I had 2 x Shield TV boxes and a few other devices at the time. But now I almost never watch FTA tv and as you say there are free alternatives. Technology has kind of moved on. Even though this has been available for years, it was still a good 7 or 8 years late to the party.

    • I have the dual tuner version and do find having recordings makes it easier to fast forward through shows if there’s bits you want to skip or rewind back to, whereas some of the catchup apps don’t seem to like that at all. Also ability to skip through ads is handy.

    • +1

Not everything is available on catchup like motorbike races etc

  • Having two android boxes, apple tvs and a smart tv i take this would be a waste?
We only have dtv on main living area and cinema room be nice to have in main bedroom or even kids bedrooms. I take i can use apps instead or do you need to pay for these apps to get dtv

    • +1

You are better of using apps like freeview in the bedrooms.

This allows any of the devices above view Free to air tv via the quad tv tuners, via network or wireless

  • I would much rather buy an nvidia shield for a similar price. (Yes, yes, I understand that you need to have a third party device to make it work with FTA).

    • (Yes, yes, I understand that you need to have a third party device to make it work with FTA).

You proobably find your answer. 😂

      • I am just talking from my perspective, hard to imagine why one would need FTA anyway, so just comparing the two media streamers / TV boxes. The thing is that shield can do everything else so much better plus you can make it work with FTA if need be. Otherwise, I am sure you can just use TV's digital tuner and record everithing on shield.

        • You basically said you would rather but a pen instead of a DVB…
These are very different devices and it is not really one over the other.

FWIW, I'll probably buy one so I can watch FTA (sport, breaking news, etc) when I am away from home (commuting or overseas).

          • @BluBoy: In case you weren't aware, I don't believe this supports streaming over the internet so you'll need some sort of proxy on your home network at least: https://forum.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=69188

            • @dazweeja: This works with Plex perfectly

            • @dazweeja: Works via Plex but stutters pretty bad for me on 100/40 internet access.

              • @spasto: Why is it using the internet tho. Or are you talking externally accessing it

                • @asa79: Mine doesn't normally go via the internet. I was merely responding to op that hdhomerun could be used via the internet but it's very slow (for me at least).

But a shield doesnt have FTA tuners, so comparing apples with mangoes

    • This is a great device to pair with a shield. I have a shield in my theatre room and the HomeRun in the garage, works awesome for FTA through either its app or plex. Still cant beat fta for chnl browsing and background Tv.

  • it needs wifi not and needs antenna which is sold separately

    • It plugs into your Router or network switch via ethernet, your device will access it via wireless or plugged in network based on your network set up.

Will need access to a TV antenna point via coax cable

      • i wonder if theres more advantages of having this compared to foxtel and fetch and roku (telstra box)

        • This isnt a client device, its a way of having android tv boxes like foxtel now, and roku devices or ipads/android tables and computers access to free to air channels where normally they wouldnt

I have one and love it. Hard to call it a bargain when you can access a lot of the same for free. But integration into my plex setup, DVR recording and ad removal is awesome. Pulling up live tv from anywhere in the house, on any device is great, and custom post-processing scripts are great. But if you just want to watch catch up tv without setting up a full media centre, this isn’t for you.

  • Quad tuner - can a single tuner record multiple channels from the same mux? And does it support decoding of MP4 encoded channels or just the traditional MPEG2 ones? (or just rely on the client to do the work)?

how is the EPG given the vagaries of the standard FTA EPG (I'm ignoring the private/locked Freeview one)

  • I use a couple of these boxes in the house. It saves me having to have an antenna to each tv plus I can watch it wifi or on mobile devices easily.

On bedroom tvs, I use a mi box using Live Channels - runs pretty flawlessly but I think using with with windows media center is the best. I’m still using this old beast and it runs beautifully and the DVR function works well.

Last time I used Kodi with this tuner it wasn’t as nice. Maybe it’s changed.

  • Damn that's a good price, paid about $205 for my dual many years ago.

  • get an app called (windows 10)

Aussie FTW from the MS store.

    Problem sorted?

  • anyone using this to connect remotely outside home? does the app (or plex) let you watch live tv while overseas?
