argh, i hate that, just copying links from google and "Referral or affiliate links in comments are not allowed"

    moto 7 plus, 100 more?
    https://www.amazon.com.au/MOTOROLA-PADU0000AU-Motorola-Indig…

gotta say im a bit of a fanboi of the Motorola, fantastic price, reliable and reasonable/decent specs.
(could possibly get office works to price match and beat it by 5%)

    • +3

Yeh they are solid phones. I moved to them a number of years ago as they were one of the only ones offering dual sim which i needed and was surprised with how good they were. Now almost all phones ofer dual sim.

They can handle most things you throw at them and for someone that doesnt use their phone to play games they will do just fine. Even though i got a Oneplus as i wanted a decent camera i would happily go back to a Motorola, especially at this price.

      • +6

Dual SIM AND MicroSD card. A rarity these days

      • +2

I have equal high respect of Xiaomi Mi A1 and Mi A2 (plus you get Android One too).

        • +1

I like them too, but we better inform people there is No sd slot, so better get the 64GB or even better the 128GB model if you need larger storage.

    • +1

No G7 Plus officeworks stock around me (QLD)
      :/

      • Not on their website either.

Good one wisc, very well spotted. Amazon AU are selling Moto G7 Plus for $399, which is a bargain and am pretty certain it is a pricing error. Fulfilled by Auditech who have it for $495 on their website and who confirmed for me that Amazon AU had stuffed up the listing. Bought one for $399 - go to Amazon's $495 listing and down the page it also shows "2 new from $399.00", click through and all is good…bought one and order is confirmed. After I bought I checked back later and it still says "2 new from $399.00" when I expected it to drop back to just one available after I bought. Also Cashrewards is -3.5% and Shopback is -4.5%, don't forget that!!!

      • The offer is still there.

That's $100 better than everywhere else.

      • G6 Plus($299) VS G7($319.20) VS G7 Plus($399.20)

Which one is the good choice?

        • I got the missus the G7 Plus for $399

  • +3

Just an FYI based on my experience with this phone.
    - Screen suffers from burn in, goes away after a couple of hours or so.
    - the vibration motor stops working sometimes
    - Software updates aren't as often as I like. It is on Android 9 (pie) but the current version is patch level February

    • +6

Had one about 6 months but can't say I've experienced the first two points.

      • Yes, I have 2 of these phones. One has issues with the vibration the other doesn't. I found it was a pretty common fault online. I was going to raise it with support but expected the "reset your phone" thing and then "send in your phone and we will send you a fixed one in a few weeks" so I didn't bother.

    • +3

Screen suffers from burn in, goes away after a couple of hours or so.

Burn in would stay. This is image retention.

My Moto G5 Plus did the same thing. And my LG G6. And my LG V20 :(

      • Yes image retention for a couple of hours. My previous phone, Oppo F1S, didn't do this. It is annoying but not a deal breaker.

      • Software updates aren't as often as I like. It is on Android 9 (pie) but the current version is patch level February

Precisely why I would prefer MiA1 or MiA2 from Xiaomi.

    • I get the vibration thing too, gets a bit tinny or weak when I'm typing. Someone on Reddit said they spam the keyboard when that happens and it fixes it until it crops up again, works for mine when it happens.

    • +1

Even with these issues, I would buy again as for the price I paid $300 there wasn't much else in the market that had AC wireless, headphone jack and sd card support. After being burnt with no software updates for my previous phone (Oppo) after I bought it, I wanted something that had reasonable (read any) updates.

  • +1

Damn, just when I was about to pull the trigger and update from my G5 budget to a G7 power, G6+ is $50 less….hmmmm
Both have NFC incase anyone's wondering which is my "must have" future proofing.

  • Ooh.. I'm in the market for a phone to replace my Nokia 6. This is tempting.

    • +1

This would make a nice performance and screen size/look/ratio to your Nokia 6. I had a look and play in store and was impressed. The build quality was nice on the Nokia, but the Moto also looks slick and more modern.

  • +1

Way off topic but in the theme of budget smartphones… Can anyone recommend a super cheap smartphone I can use on an overseas trip to Vietnam ? My thinking is to leave my iPhone at home, and use a cheap smartphone while over there for basic browsing, google maps & WhatsApp. Do I have to worry about what network frequency the phone supports if I buy a sim card from Vietnam ? What phone specs should I focus on for use with gmaps and whatsapp? Ram, Processor etc etc

    • +1

Maybe you could consider buying travel insurance

      • +1

And pay the excess if my phone gets damaged / stolen ? Not to mention having to file police reports in a foreign country? No thanks

    • +14

How about the Motorola Moto G6 Plus 4/64GB, Dual SIM. It's only $299 Delivered @ Officeworks ?

      • I was thinking around the $100 mark.

    • Not being rhetorical or sarcastic - why would you do that?

      • Incase of damage / theft.

        • +2

what if the phone you left at home gets stolen while you're away. You'd still have it if you took it with you ;)

        • "Jbucks" Good call there for not taking an expensive phone ( or laptop/tablet ) with you to S.E.A.

I got a decent phone stolen in North Thailand at night on a bus to Cambodia. My own fault but glad it was not too expensive.

Just get an unlocked ( prepaid that you can cheaply unlock ) phone that supports needed bands in Vietnam. Just google Vietnam Bands first. Any Quad Core smartphone with preferably 1.5-2GB Ram should be fine, if not one with 1GB running Android Go Edition should do too such as a Nokia 2.1. The Telstra Essential is half price on sale for $49.99 at Coles or Woolies this week, has main 3G bands and get cheap unlock code and good to go.

    • +1

I travelled with a pricey phone, just get a bulky ugly case for it and be sensible. Much cheaper than a new phone, for the environment too. And get travel insurance.

      • +2

Yes, so have I. And I would much prefer to have taken a cheap phone that did what I needed rather than worrying about that $1,500 piece of tech sitting in my pocket that could be easily damaged / stolen.

        • +1

If it really bothers you, there's plenty of second hand phones out there for cheaper than buying one new that would do the job perfectly.

          • +1

@Nuggets: Perhaps I should have posted something along these lines:

Would this phone handle Google Maps, basic browsing and WhatsApp ?
            https://www.bigw.com.au/product/konka-sp3-smartphone-black/p…

I'm just unclear on the specs / frequency bands I should be looking out for

            • +2

@JBucks: If it runs Android I'm sure it will handle the above.

For frequencies, find the phone on gsmarena which will give you the specs, and then find out which bands are used by the carriers in Vietnam. I'm guessing most if not all of the 3g bands will be supported but this is how you can find out for sure.

    • What sort of traveler are you? I always take my phone, common sense keeps it safe in most places… but if you're the sort to get hammered and pass out or accept pills from strangers or try and start fights with locals that looked at ya gal twice or leave your backpack alone "just for a few minutes", well ymmv…

      • +3

        Well this is going well….

Is it really such a crazy idea to spend $80 on a phone to take travelling and leave your $1,500 iPhone at home ?

        • +1

Not at all, perfectly sensible. I'm guessing that half the posters that are mocking either don't travel, haven't lost stuff whilst travelling or haven't had to deal with travel insurance companies

          • @banana365:

            • I travel quite frequently
            • I've lost my $1000 phone overseas, I still think it's worth it for the photos I've taken and continue to take. When my phone was stolen my biggest frustration was the basic phone I picked up as a replacement. It was slow and unworkable.
            • I've dealt with insurance, it was a PITA. Didn't change my mind.

And I'm certainly not mocking. I just think that there's better options than buying a $80 phone.

        • +2

I have several cheap Android phones…Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 (paid $20), Telstra 4GX (paid $59 I think), Alcatel Pop 4 (paid $69 I think). All are slow and annoying to use. The first 2 are on Android 4.x. Would be fine if you're just making phone calls or checking messages/weather and light social media use. I use them like that if I am on holiday sometimes, especially if I'm going to a beach or lake. When my kids first get phones it'll be something like this. The Galaxy Ace is my backup alarm when I'm on shift. None would be fun to use long term but for short duration travel any one would be okay. When you pay <$100, you can't expect too much. Low memory, and slow processors are what you get.

        • +1

Just a thought! I've been travelling fulltime for 30 years, been everywhere, just been careful and never had an issue… just thought you might like to know that travelling isn't as risky as you might worry :)

But yeah, whatever floats your boat! Maybe just ask your family/mates on Facebook/whatever if anyone has an old phone lying around - most people have a few they outgrew they just keep as a backup.

    • Don't you want to take great photos whilst on hols? Bring your best phone! Vietnam is safer than Australia any day of the week!

    • Not sure if this is over your budget

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/462994

    • I have around 10 old phones laying around, personal, family, small business. Varying levels of minor damage. Never got around to using those recycling for pennies sites.

I'm sure everyone you know has at least one.

  • My G5 plus (dual sim 4g/32g) is still going strong. Custom ROMs have ensured I am on the latest security patches. The camera is the only thing holding it back sadly :(

    • I have a motorola g5s and the camera is absolutely terrible! I thought more megapixels = better photos, but it really does depend on the software. Thinking about getting the Poco F1 instead since it's in the same price range, but has glowing reviews.

      • +1

'More megapixels = better' is a stubborn myth. Some of the best rated phone cams are only 12 megapixel. The higher the pixel count, the smaller the pixels are, the less light they will catch, the more noise you'll get and worse the low light performance will be. This is one of the reasons that daylight pics usually look OK but indoor photos look crap on some of these newer 48 megapixel cheap phones.

I reckon the next step in phone cams will be larger sensors.

        • ^ This.
And mp is just the SIZE of the image.

I'll never forget my 2mp Nikon Coolpix, circa 1998. One of the first ones. Bulky, clunky, small lens. And full res was 2mp (~1600x1200)… but DAMN, the images were awesome. They shamed other camera's photos for YEARS.

    • I have one of those too ( 4GB/32GB ) and although I still really like it, stuck on Android 8.1 and security patch Feb/2019.

Just wondering what Rom your running and I imagine none of the extra Moto actions/fingerprint gestures work after installing a different non Moto Rom?

    • Where does one look for custom ROMs these days? CM was as far back as I go…

  • I bought mum a G4 Plus and she bloody loves it. This is super tempting.

  • +1

This is a great phone and a bargain at this price

  • If you're wanting a better spec'd phone for $370 delivered plus 20gb kogan sim

    Ds has the Nokia 8
    https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/nokia-8-64gb-steel-grey-…

Not a better bargain but food for thought

Better gorrilla glass, camera, display, processor y chipset, IP rating.

I'm thinking of getting either one so if anyone has an opinion of a better deal please reply me, much appreciated

*Edit Nokia 6.1 for $318 delivered with the 20gb sim

  • +22

You can thank me for the price drop guys. I've been putting off by one for months, waiting for it to drop under $350. I finally gave up yesterday and bought a Umidigi A5 Pro.

    You're welcome. 😐

    • -1

that looks incredible for the price, where did you buy yours from and at what price? how are you finding it?

      • Not received it yet. I ordered it through AliExpress for about $160.

    • Off-topic but this happens to me all the time. Waited for months for a GTX 1060 to drop in price, gave up and bought full price - the next week NVIDIA released the much better successor 1660 for the same price. Bought a new monitor for $320, weeks later it's on Ozbargain for $190. FML…

  • -1

    Great phone, no complaints

  • -1

Bought my dad a G7 from eBay Allphones (20% off) last week for $320…

    • +2

the g6 plus has a better camera and is a better alround phone then the newer g7 , the g7 plus on the other hand is better

      • Really? I assumed the g7 camera was better than the g6 plus.

  • +1

Very good phone. Wish I hadn't dropped mine in the beach..

  • I settled for the Nokia 6.1 a few weeks back , I think I'd go the moto if I had the choice again 3gb ram and 32gb storage does the job but 4gb ram and 64gb storage is better !

    • +1

I have a Nokia 4GB/64GB and would mainly prefer the Moto for the rounded corners form factor, front fingerprint sensor/gestures/larger and longer aspect ratio over the Nokia 6.1. This is just my personal preference as I have a similar but smaller Moto G5 Plus.

  • I would rather buy a Moto G7 Power 4gb/64gb for $274. Better specs and very long battery life and better camera.

    • +4

      Not quite that simple.
      CPU and GPU are lineball.
The G6+ has a much higher resolution screen (1080p vs 720p), Bluetooth 5, AC wifi, lighter weight, thinner, slightly better camera (dual lens, dual flash, larger aperture)

The G7 Power has insane battery life.

Where can you see it for $274? It's usually not that cheap except for grey import.

  • I bought the G6+ last year when it first came out. I rate it very highly for a cheap'ish phone. For $299 it's fantastic value.

    • I read the camera is super slow, and anything with the slightest movement will have motion blur. Is this true?

  • Thanks OP. Bought one of the last two that the Tuggeranong (ACT) store had.

  • Does the Moto G6 Plus have NFC? The linked page does not say, but some other sources say it does. Multiple versions?

  • I hear the camera is very slow on this phone? Anyone with real life experience who can confirm?

    • Yes mine does that. I think it is a software problem though as it got a bit better after getting updates but still blurs a bit now if anything moves.

      • +1

Use use Footej Camera on my Moto G5 Plus (with the Pro unlock from those rewards credits). Pictures are noticeably better than the stock app.

  • Thanks op. Got one

  • Good one. Thanks

  • +2

There were still about 4 left at Southport on the Gold Coast.

They also had two G5 S Plus for $149. I bought one, so that leaves one left.

Looks like I will need to do ten security & OS updates as it was December 2017 firmware!

  • +2

Mine arrived yesterday, so I had about a day to play with it. Very happy so far. It stomps all over the Xiaomi Redmi it replaces. Much, much better camera and the Android install has much less bloat. I wish it was not pre-installed with Outlook and LinkedIn, but those can be disabled. Certainly better than all the crap that comes with MIUI. It took a few update cycles to bring it up to Android 9, but it wasn't complicated.

For $300 the camera performance is great. Dual SIM and microSD slot and 3.5mm headphone jack, with USB-C ticks all the boxes for me. Charges fast enough too.

I like it, maybe I should have bought two!

    • I think it's possible to install the Google Camera (from the Pixels) too, for even better camera performance.
      Maybe worth trying out.

  • Just picked up from OW. Upgraded to Pie. Seems a great phone! Thanks OP.
