500 gig doesnt go far for high res videos and photos maybe 10 bluray movies?

That is probably not the use case for rugged portable storage. Eg. This would be ideal for a business who does a daily backup that is taken off site each night.

Lol imagine buying this and filling it with 10 movies

10 movies if you're just storing a raw rip for some reason…

  • Unless you want that special casing, for personal use,I would recommend to purchase a NVMe to USB-C SSD enclosure(I have seen others mentioned already here in OzB), and put in a respectable SSD inside. I wouldn't put a high-end SSD inside since it will be bottle-necked by the USB 3.1 Gen 2 connection anyway, but it is still wayyy faster than those external SATA SSD drive. It is cheaper on per gig basis and faster.

Any ssd & enclosure you recommend specifically?

      • I'm interested in this as well. I've tried to do some research but couldn't find much on enclosures…

        • I got a transparent/silver one from Orico for $30 and put a WD Black SN750 inside and it works really well(why? because it looks really cool with SN750). But really any sorts of enclosure will do the job, just get them as cheap as possible, check out anandtech's review (https://www.anandtech.com/show/13953/plugable-usbcnvme-tooll…)

WD SN750 certainly isn't cheap but there are a lot of great options out there. Intel 760p(get them on sale, you can get 2TB 760p for 400$) or even those QLC drives like crucial P1 and 660p(Personally, I hate QLC drives, they basically solely relies on cache, which really makes me unconfortable)

For me, it really provide a great balance between those External SATA SSDs and those super expensive Thunderbolt 3 based external SSDs, they are faster of course but they are just too expensive ,like Samsung X5,(1TB version easily runs you 700$ at least).

MyDigitalSSD M2X is a great enclosure for NVMe SSDs but unfortunately they're not available in Australia. You can import one from USA but when you factor in shipping costs and tax it's no longer a good deal.

NVMe drives have significantly higher specs than SATA drives on paper but with an external enclosure there's no major difference in real-life performance. I've tried both and the NVMe drive is only a couple of seconds faster when it comes to copying large files and booting VMs. This was between a Samsung 860 Evo and a 970 Evo.

  • Friends, at high transfer speeds these ssd's tend to thermal throttle due to I believe the casing being an insulator. Keep that in mind depending on your use case.
