  • I have resisted the RGB trend for years but might pull the trigger on this 😅

    • It's easy to just turn off the RGB if that's your thing. I find the rainbow look pretty gross

    • backlit keyboards are a must for a nocturnal soul like myself, looks like you can choose a colour with these, got to be happy about that

  • Can we control the RGB on this?

    • +1

It has limited control. 13 preset patterns and 5 custom profiles. Note that the custom are always on, you can't make nice animations or moving patterns/changing colours like on higher spec keyboards.

    • They have software that can customize the rgb to your liking. Lots of set patterns but I prefer a static colour myself. Software works simply. Driver can be found on the Kogan website

  • I know nothing about mechanical keyboards but this seems like a reasonable price. I need a new keyboard, just wondering if these are any good? To anyone who has bought one of these kogan mechanical keyboards, are you happy with your purchase, how's the noise of the keys and is there anything you don't like?

I youtubed a couple of videos and I like the sound of the razer yellow switches (and their greens), what's the equivalent of razer yellow switches? I found mixed results for the cherrys- some people love them and others think there are better brands. Didn't realize there was so much info, quote overwhelming.

    • +3

I liked mine enough to use it instead of my razer keyboard. Note that's not saying that much. It's still a budget keyboard but the keys themselves are more than usable and waaaaaay better than non-mechanical.

    • I have Razer green and find them similar to these outemu blue switches. No idea about razer yellow

    • +1

Unfortunately there is no real standard with mech keyboards. There are however common type of switches. Generally speaking the most common types are clicky/noisy, less noisy with a bump when pressed, smooth to press and the most quiet.
They each have other characteristics such as how far you have to press before they engage etc. but if you've not used mechanical before these aren't too important as you will adapt to what ever you use.
The most common colours that relate to the types mentioned above (in the same order) are Blue, Brown, Red. Razer however have a totally different colour scheme because, well… it's razer.
I think however their yellow = red (smooth/quiet) and green = blue (clicky/noisy/bumpy/a bit harder required to press).
It's very much personal preference. I've used cheap blues, Cherry browns, Logitech RoamerG (which are like reds) & the Kogan outemu brown (I have the 10 key-less keyboard form the last sale).
I really don't like the noisy blues. I found my spelling errors were higher and the noise is too much.
I love the Logitech RoamerG (reds) which is what I use for gaming. The Browns (both cherry & outemu) I use for work as I find them nice for typing.
My recommendation, the browns (which are sort of in the middle) are the best place to start for a mech keyboard. They are the best all rounder. Next would be the red as what this keyboard deal is. Although there is a brown version of this on the Kogan site too for the same price.
As mentioned I have the 10 key-less from Kogan & the build quality for the price is pretty good. I hate the lighting on it though. It seems although you can change the different patterns/effects, they keys are set to a particular colour & they are different across the board. Mine from left to right is red, yellow, purple, aqua, white & blue. I'd prefer a single colour. & turning the lights off is useless as you can't really see the letters on the black keys. But at this price it's small compromise to for one of the better budget mech keyboards. This full sized version looks like the LEDs are customisable. Wish that was the same with the small one.

      • I appreciate your detailed response, thanks. I am still on the fence, don't know if I would like the red switches though.

      • The $35 Kogan board is limited with it's rgb settings unfortunately

  • +2

if you've look at this deal you probably noticed the compact version for $35 - no numpad, but just in case you haven't here it is:

    • The brown outemu switches are quite lifeless in my opinion. Not overly tactile. I prefer the more clicky blue switches. Brown would be better suited for someone in an open workspace though

      • yes i was afraid of that but tbh i'm not familiar with mechanical keyboards, always been far too cheap to spend > $100 to find out, felt sorry for the bastards who splurged that much on a keyboard when you can get a cheap backlit for $30

my current aliexpress $30 backlit membrane keyboard (must for me) is on it's way out, completely worn through all the paint on the S and D keys, managed to gum up the keys with coke just hours after this purchase too! LOL

never liked the idea of the noise but the description of the tactile feel of the blues convinced me, hopefully the noise grows on me

btw thanks scotty for posting this.. there is no way i'd spend a hundred on a keyboard, maybe this experience will learn my ignorant ass on what i was missing

        • +1

          Happy to help.

Mechanical keyboards are like 144hz screens.. not necessary at all to have a good experience but once it becomes your normal, you just can't go back!

For me personally, I just really crave that clacky clack noise for some reason.

Some people will spend hundreds building/customizing their ideal keyboard. If you type all day, everyday its probably a fair investment though

    • Yes I have this but didn't realise the keys are set to those colours & can't be changed. I hate that.
But it is still quite good in terms of quality and feel. I relaced a cheap blue switch one that I got from Ali express with it and find it's much better.

  • my old keyboard stopped working few months back, and got this as a replacement. Thought I may need to buy a better one after, but after using it I think I will just stick with it, definitely good value for the price.

  • Also brown and blue switches for same price

  • Does anyone know if there is software to configure the lights and macros etc…

Can't find anything on the Kogan website.
