[eBay Plus] Huawei MateBook X Pro (2018) Space Grey i7-8550U 512GB 16GB $2019 @ Microsoft eBay

330
PLUSWKND

If you don't like silver and have eBay Plus, this grey one is only $20 more.

The grey one has been quite hard to find recently, and Microsoft say, at least for the moment, once their stock runs out, they will not be getting any more. So I'd suggest getting in quick if you're after a grey one!

Lots of reviewers consider it the best Windows laptop in this form factor around. Of course that depends on what you want to do with your laptop, but this is a very highly-regarded laptop.

A 2019 model was released in some countries, but with a large price bump for minimal gains. The most notable would probably be upgrading the type-C port from 2 lanes to 4 lanes which could be important if you're intending to connect an external GPU to it, for example.

Highlights are:
- 13.9" 3000x2000 100% sRGB 450 nit touchscreen
- Nvidia MX150 GPU
- 1.3kg weight
- Aluminium build
- 2x Type-C and a classic Type-A USB port

I bought one of these bad boys 3 months ago at $2099. If you give no shits about the political bs it is a solid & beautiful device.

Before everything went downhill for Huawei this would have been an OK deal for a previous gen laptop (albeit a great previous gen laptop). But now? Why aren't these things half price?

I think it's because people are still willing to pay for it. It's a good laptop and I don't think there's anything else that can be an exact replacement. As far as I've seen, the competitors are either lacking a GPU (e.g. XPS13), touchscreen (Razer, Asus, Latitude), or are very expensive (Surface Book 2).

I would only buy it from a major retailer like Microsoft or Amazon though. That way if the situation doesn't change and I need some warranty service, it shouldn't be a problem getting it from Amazon or Microsoft.

Yes, I mentioned that in the first line. ;)

Grey is hard to find nowadays and looks nicer IMHO, so the $20 difference might be worth it to some.

      • Just put on decal stickers you can have one rainbow colour each every day for a week

  • Hey couldn't be bothered posting an official deal but these are $1809 from mobile citi ebay.

Also I have seen youtube videos showing the 2 lane USB C being plugged into a external GPU.

Note: I am currently using this laptop to type this up :D. Best laptop in the world!

    • Good price but that's not the same model though?

      • Yeah different model

    • Hey couldn't be bothered posting an official deal but these are $1809 from mobile citi ebay.

As others mentioned, that's not the X Pro model which is limited to 8GB RAM. I think it has a faster GPU though.

Also I have seen youtube videos showing the 2 lane USB C being plugged into a external GPU.

Yup it'll work, but the 2 lanes might be a bottleneck if you're using a high-end eGPU.

      Sorry guys wrong model!

Get xiaomi air for half the price and thank me later

      • Which one?
This looks close, but costs $2126 after GST, only has 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, only a FHD screen, no touchscreen, Chinese Windows, and no local warranty.

  • Wondering is it Au plug or Cn plug of the power adapter?
    I just don’t like the plug converter….

    • It's sold by Microsoft Australia so it would be official Australian stock with an AU plug.

  • I'm so confused, what's so special about this laptop?

Is it just because it's thin?

The CPU is ok, but the 8GB of RAM isn't enough to run Chrome how I like it, and the GPU is heavily underpowered

    • Hmm, where did you get 8GB from? It has 16GB.

As far as I can see, no other laptop has the same combination of hardware:

      • i7 8550U
      • 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
      • MX150 GPU (which definitely outperforms onboard Intel UHD 620)
      • 13.9" 3000x2000 450 nits 100% sRGB touchscreen
      • 1.33kg weight
      • long battery life
      • reviews really well
      • good build quality

      the GPU is heavily underpowered

That's because it's not a gaming laptop; it's a laptop for people who want better performance than an Intel UHD 620 but don't need a GTX1060, e.g. for Adobe software which would be bottlenecked by the CPU anyway.

      • Ah my mistake, I guess I was looking at specs off the first website I clicked from Google, it's not 100% clear on the eBay page which specs I should be reading: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Huawei-MateBook-X-Pro-i7-8550U…

In contrast, I would choose a laptop like this Asus TUF FX705GE-EW018T 17.3-inch for $1,600 after cashback: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/asus-tuf-fx705ge-ew018t-17-3…

The only positives I can see for the Huawei is it's thin form factor and overpowered screen resolution

Sure, if pure power is what you're after, there are cheaper, more powerful options. But it would be a huge pain to carry that 2.7kg laptop when travelling, plus the 120W power brick.

The only positives I can see for the Huawei is it's thin form factor

Yes, that's the main selling point - getting that much processing and GPU power into a small, thin, light body and doing it well.

          and overpowered screen resolution

Overpowered for games, excellent for productivity. :)

          • @eug: Alright alright alright, I've been going a bit crazy trying to find a decently priced laptop with a thin and light form factor with an actual GPU and I'm glad to say for an extra 260g I think I've found it, an ASUS ZenBook UX533FD 15.6" FHD i7 Laptop: https://www.centrecom.com.au/asus-zenbook-ux533fd-156-fhd-i7…

            Main Specs:

            i7 8565U
            16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 MAX Q (which definitely outperforms both MX150 GPU & onboard Intel UHD 620)
            15.6" 1080p screen
1.59kg weight (260g heavier than Matebook X Pro)
            long battery life

            Thoughts?

@Gorian4: That's definitely a good laptop, but after using a touchscreen for so many years, I really cannot go back to a non-touchscreen laptop. Also now that I've been spoiled by the awesomely crisp text on high-res screens, it's really, really difficult to go back down to 1080p.

But if size (15.6" is quite a bit larger), weight, no touchscreen, and not being able to hook up an eGPU (no thunderbolt port) is not an issue, then it's definitely a laptop worth considering.

@eug: All fair points, good talk :D

  • In the current circumstance, Does Microsoft and other US companies(antivirus .etc) will provide their support in future ??

  • Can I get this and still be entitled for TRS?

    • Yup!
