Perfume Purchased 11 Years Old?

I've Purchased Two Perfumes From Catch, which have just arrived.

One of them is Burberry London For Women the Other Burberry London For men.

I have opened both perfumes, after checking what seems to be the only batch Code both perfumes come up as 11 Years of Age.

The Men's Perfume which is EDT has a hint of harsh alcohol smell.

Am i able to do anything about this?

Both Products were Checked using Checkfresh.

Have put in an RMA Process with Catch.

Women's Batch code is 8113

Men's Batch code is 8008

Neither Batch Code has any letters, I have also wondered if the products are fake is there a way i can find out about this.

Have you confirmed that 8008 is literally August 2008. It could be batch number 8,008.

    Have you tried: http://checkcosmetic.net/

    What is batch code?
The batch code allows manufacturers or suppliers identifying the batch in which the product was produced. If the product is not made in a batch, then the code should enable the date and place of manufacture to be identified.

    • more likely reading it as 2008 008th day of the year

      • Or that, whatever, I mean does it literally mean a date, or is it literally a "batch" number counting up from 1? O.o

    • I Used checkfresh for the Batch codes.

      • So what does checkfresh say? It was manufactured in 2008?

        • Correct i have listed the Codes, you can check if you wish.

          This is For Mens

          Production date 2008-01-08
          Age 11 years 5 months 20 days

          This is for women

          Production date 2008-04-22
          Age 11 years 2 months 6 days

@Tehcookiemonsta: Fair enough. If they smell 'funny' like alcohol, then your path forward is simple.

Contact customer service of the place you bought them from, explain they smell off. Don't focus on the age/batch codes unless it comes to it. Any decent company getting a complaint their product is off, should be sending you replacements. If the replacements have the batch code and smell funky as well, then get into the discussion around the batch codes coming up as 2008 and you want a refund.

Play it cool. Ask for replacements, if still no good ask for a refund. Only get into the age conversation when necessary (or upfront but it might hurt your complaint that they smell off).

If that fails adivse the company you will contact consumer affairs for advice (mild but polite threat)

    • I Also Just tried the Codes on the website you listed, and they don't work.

Both Codes are listed on the Box and are also on the Bottles, However they are clear through sticky taped not etched in.

  • I have also wondered if the products are fake is there a way i can find out about this

Yes, you could ask the manufacturer if the products are legitimate. They may also tell you what the batch codes mean.

      ^This
Burberry would be pretty concerned to find their overpriced smelly water is that old, if indeed it is.

      • Thanks for the laugh out of this situation, i'm actually quite annoyed cheered me up abit.

        • +1

Glad you saw it that way.
Seriously though Burberry almost definitely would not be happy that their Perfume is that old.
Scent chemicals react together and degrade over time. The odour is no longer even remotely close to the intended formulation.
If Catch don't sort it out for you I'd be surprised if Burberry didn't.

          • @ESEMCE: Do you think Burberry would Replace it for me if catch dont, i would of thought they wouldn't care. Thanks for the help.

              @Tehcookiemonsta: Frankly yes.
It costs them virtually nothing to produce on the scale they're manufacturing. You're paying mostly for the fancy bottle, a heap of marketing and a healthy profit margin.
They treat you nice this time and you're more likely to stump up for another fancy bottle in the future!

              • +1

@ESEMCE: My bet is Burberry wont replace, unless Catch is an authorised reseller (Myer and DJs are two).
If you buy another fancy bottle from Burberry (not Catch, not some backyard reseller or grey importer), they might care.

              • @ESEMCE: Burberry won't do anything about it unless if it was from an Authorized Reseller (I emailed them).

They didn't even tell me anything about the batch codes even though i asked them. Basically they half answered my question and couldn't care less if the product is even fake.

On the other hand each bottle costs about $130 dollars from them directly where as i paid $115 for these two so eh.

Will be calling Burberry or emailing them again later to see if i get a better answer.

First thing I'd be doing is checking whether they even made these brands back in 2008… Perfumes tend to be pretty short lived in Marketing.

Both London for men and women have been sold since 2006.

You've got 2-in-1 product. It makes you smell great. and it also sterilise your skin

Just curious, is it illegal to sell old perfume?

    • +1

Have no idea, but i sure as hell wouldn't of purchased it. well for one the EDT has a clear smell of alcohol and not really much perfume.

    • There's no best before/expiry dates on perfumes, nor is it regulated like food.

      • I've smelled Both Perfumes in store and the men's did not smell the same.

While my mum says the Women's has faded after an Hour and being an EDP it should certainly last longer especially with what people on Fragrantica have rated.

        • Are there layers in the bottle? Try giving it a really good shake, maybe the oils and components have separated?

Chemicals like fragrances are one of things that can degrade/change with environmental factors, like temperature, but unlike food, its not regulated (nor need it be).

When you buy from a grey importer, cheap warehouses (including CW) etc, you risk buying fragrances that have a dodgy chain of custody with questionable storage methods. I would say new released perfumes should be ok, but for old released perfumes like Burberry London, beware.

Also, note that reviews, ratings, smell, longevity on skin- is all anecdotal.

Check with the company, but it is not uncommon for batch numbers to be reused after 10 yrs.

  • Just let catch know you are unhappy they have excellent customer service.
