I know, there is a new 7th gen. It's still a nice mp3 player, FaceTime, imessage, etc to be considered as a portable internet, communication and entertainment device.

I used to have a Nano with the scroll wheel. Apple put the headphone jack on the bottom, which means when I put it in my shirt pocket, it had to go in upside down. Which also reversed the controls when trying to access them through my pocket. Good design.

A round wheel was very bad for my use case since being round, it's difficult to feel exactly where the FF and RW was. If you hit it in the wrong place, you just did something else.

I would have preferred just buttons.

Still beats touch screen controls though. And I think that explains why I haven't used the thing in almost 10 years.

Also, I don't recall if it remembered track position when you switch to a different track and back. As an audiobook/podcast listener I would lose my place and have to find it again.

Worth paying $110 more for the latest 128gb? Wife insists she needs these for gym even though she's an Android user for phones.

Believe the latest are on par with a 6s, I'm guessing these are much less?

    • Get a Sony Walkman NW-A55 and a microsdxc card. It is much smaller, has better audio quality and is easier to carry unless she really needs the apps etc.

      • She needs video too, instructor. I really can't see why she can't use an Android phone…

          ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@PlushToys: Just cringing at the thought of a $600 ipod…. Get a quality Android phone for $250 with 400gb sd lol… I'll keep trying :(

            • @scuderiarmani: Get iPod 7th Gen 128GB for her as she is the boss.

            • @scuderiarmani: May as well get her the iPhone 6S which was under $400 not long ago.

            • @scuderiarmani: can’t run imessages or facetime on android and if that is what friends or family use why would you change ?

i wouldn’t waste my time on a soapbox telling apple users to abandon apple and switch to android and use skype instead of imessages or facetime and let google track you in order to save some money on cheaper android phone.

but then some people order the mc donald’s deals without meat to save money i guess, i’d rather pay extra and keep the meat on my burger.

              • @garage sale: She's an Android phone user, as above, has been like me since the 3GS, just that the ipod is more gym friendly unfortunately in her eyes. So she'll still have her Note 8.

if she "insists", let her fork out for it.

    • No.

32GB is plenty for an audio player. $110 is a lot to pay for 96GB.

    • i have an android phone and have an ipod for the ios things i need ….. half the price of phone option.

    One word: Spotify

  • Just wanted to ask the Apple faithful, how do you explain why this thing (and 7th gen) has a headphone jack still? The narrative is that Apple is trying to phase out 3.5mm for good because it is 'ancient' technology that is holding back progress and that its removal is for the greater good of you and me. When you remove it from your iPhones and now iPad Pro, but then include it with this device, it makes the story a lot harder to believe.

If you want to sell that Lightning audio and BT are better than 3.5mm, then why not just have those and remove the jack? If an iPhone doesn't need 3.5mm, why would an iPod?

    • ipod isn’t waterproof unlike some iphone models, and also there is more space inside an ipod than an iphone as no phone chips and smaller battery in ipod.

eventually ipod will also be lighting only if the chipset changes and apple streamline parts.

the ipod update interval is much longer than iphones which are every 12 mths.

      • Are you saying it was about waterproofing and space all along?

        Is iPad Pro 11 waterproof?

the ipod update interval is much longer than iphones which are every 12 mths.

The latest iPod was announced only a few weeks ago and still has 3.5mm.

      • Are you also aware that the S7-S10 are all IP68 resistant whilst having a headphone jack?
