mobile phone apps have superseded the usability of DSLRs long ago

Said by someone with no clue what they're talking about.

        • +1

          LMAO

      • +2

        Oh, that's gold.

      • You mean to tell me those professional photographers have just been throwing their money away on dslr bodies and lenses when all they needed was a samsung galaxy mobile phone?

        Whoa!!!

        • +1

Of course not. They also need one of those $15 lens kits from Kogan that attach with a small magnet.

          • @Tacooo: Thanks for the tip. Im so turning pro photographer with a galaxy mobile phone and lens attachments.

            • @xoom: You'll be the next best thing on Instagram in no time! #nofilter #actuallyfivefilters #creative

          • @Tacooo: Pfft, there's nothing software can't fix.

          • +1

@Tacooo: Ah, now I know what I was missing in my life. I shall throw away my lenses, speedlite, triggers, tripods, slave flashes, filters, battery grips, and of course the DSLR. I could now exclusively use a mobile phone from this point onward as soon as the $25 kogan thing arrives.

            • +1

@aussieolfaction: Whoa now. You paid $25 for your 3 lens kit? Buddy you got suckered. Everyone knows you can't tell the difference between a $15 lens kit and a $25 version. Let alone those suckers that pay $1500 for a SINGLE LENS! What a bunch of dummies.

              • +1

@Tacooo: Thank you for liberating me! What a proper pinhead I was.

I have now cancelled the $25 kit and ordered the $15 lens kit instead!!!!1!111!

Let's hope that I get a good price for the dslr and useless accessories as I put them on ebay, but who am I kidding?! It doesn't take good as pictures as a mobile phone, so I'd be happy if I get 10% of what I originally paid.

                • +1

@aussieolfaction: Honestly at this stage you'd probably be better seeing if someone less technologically inclined would swap everything you have for a brand new Galaxy S10+ 5G or Huawei P30 Pro. Then you're basically in the game. Plus with the 50x digital zoom on the P30 Pro you won't even need a telephoto lens adapter.

                  • +1

@Tacooo: 50x digital zoom sounds like the bees knees. I should have known! Thanks a bunch, mate.

                • +1

@aussieolfaction: Hate to break it to you buddy but you be lucky to get 10% purchased price for those useless gear. Its considered junk now that mobile photography upped its game.

                  • +1

@xoom: Off I go to get the samsung g8 or whatever would make me totally hip!

I've thrown the DSLR and the associated accessories in the e-waste bin in light of the critical developments in the "mobile photography" space.

                    • @aussieolfaction: Youre in luck. Theres a sale on samsung galaxy a20, a30, a50 and a70

                      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/468296

Combine this with the clip on/magnetic lenses you getting from kogan and you can once again be on top of the photography game.

Dont listen to those delusional people on photography forums spreading misinformation about needing to spend hundred if not thousands on photography gear. All you need is a mobile phone and some el cheapo lens kits.

  • +1

If I wanted to spend money on a camera app (and I have), I'd choose Manual camera or Camera FV-5.

Hmm..not sure why..on my note 4, the video mode only allows me to shoot in 1080p…I am sure the note 4 can do UHD….

  • Thank you, this will be really useful for some videos I've been trying to do.

    • What's the best ISO settings to set to replicate DSLR image like quality?

      • +1

        ISO doesn't replicate "DSLR quality"…

        • So what good is the "pro" feature on the samsung phones then??

          • @Homr: Find a free udemy course on photography 101 for more info.

i just find Google Camera to be quite good actually.
    ( it's free too :-) )

for those on Android phones, go to the "'Google Camera Port' Project" —> https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
and find the Google Camera app for your Android phone.

    • Thanks. Which one would you try on a Sharp Aquos S3 (Android 8.0.0)

    • -2

      No, Google "charges" you
      use of your data…. ;-)

      • the Google Camera, is customized .APK of the camera software.
if you don't upload the photos or use GPS tagging, then Google has less of your data.

if you don't want to rely on Google or Play store (google service framework),
then you can read into MicroG and Yalp store, for Android phones.
this is a very good Google substitute.

  • Can anyone recommend me a camera app that had the function to take long exposure photo?

    Thank

  • Ha, don't think it will help much on an Alcatel 1.

    • Software can perform magic. Look at what Google has been able to accomplish.
But I must digress, I don't think anything can help with the Alcatel 1 haha

  • +1

I'll stick to my Gcam APK thanks.

I have found that these 3rd party camera apps do NOTHING MORE than the phone's camera is capabale of doing.

They are just an alternative to the native camera app which, in manual mode can do everything offered by this app. It perhaps just presents the camera options in a different and sometimes more user friendly way.

i.e. If the phone does not have built-in anti-shake then the app wont suddenly add this capabalility. Its physically impossible!

  • Any1 know how well (or otherwise)
    XiaoMi's Mi Max 3 (w/6.9" screen)'s
    camera performs…?

    Thanks

  • Seems to have expired

  • Not free anymore

  • On Android you're usually always better off using the camera app that came with the phone by the manufacturer.

Camera apps from the play store have to use generic controls of the camera hardware as every phone is different, the app that comes with your phone is usually custom designed to get the most out of the specific camera hardware.

This also applies to Instagram and other social media apps. Take the photo with the phone's native camera app then upload this via Insta-Face-whatever.
