imagining a 5g environment in our country that has slower internet than kenya

          • -8

@johnwinkle: the huawei fan boy is back, you're still blacklisted by trump, don't get too excited yet.

            • +4

@[Deactivated]: It isn’t hard to get on Trumps bad side; unless you are willing to kiss his backside you are on the outer. Trumplethinkskin is a mental midget toddler who throws tantrums when he doesn’t get his way.

              • -5

@try2bhelpful: trump is a businessman, he wants his business to trump over others. huwawei might end up like HTC, a page in history books.

HTC M8 (mate) was the king back in the day, its long forgotten now.

We need to accept that Apple, Microsoft, Google and Facebook will endure for 10,000 years with all of us supporting them without question or hesitation. Without them we'll be in stone age.

                • +5

                  @[Deactivated]: Nutter from ASIO?

                • @[Deactivated]: Ironically I'm on Oz today because my HTC 10 has just died again, it's been back to JB 4 times now and never seems to work properly once it's gets back from repair. Not sure if I should push for warranty or simply buy another phone. I love it, suits me perfectly, just can't stand the constant faults - dicky bluetooth and WiFi, speaker feedback, constant random re-starts.

                • @[Deactivated]: You really are funny when quoting businesses with longevity. Do us all a favour and sell your house and bet on those stocks, then come back in 20 years when you are still renting. Getting China offside with his petty posturing will, ultimately, hurt American companies and they are making that very clear. I love Apple but I remember when it was profitable, then very not, and now back again. Spreading the risk is the first rule of investment. No wonder you love Trump.

              • -2

@try2bhelpful: lmao the irony. Bitter, deranged leftists who lost an election are the ones who have been throwing tantrums for the last 2+ years, but yeah, keep pretending it's "Trumplethinkskin" (lol what a zinger! You got him with that one!)

                • @SporadicUser: You really have bought the right wing farm haven’t you? Trump is a very poor businessman. If he had taken what he inherited, and just invested on average returns in the Stockmarket, he would be much better off than he is now. Then add in 6 bankruptcies of companies associated with him, the Trump University payouts for rubbish courses, the closing of his charitable wing under a cloud, the list is extensive. If you want to see tantrums have a look at his tweets, the way he talks, the way he acts. He is not doing America any long term favours, he is only hastening the demise by putting everyone else offside. Stop watching Fox News and listening to shock jokes and do some googling, you might see the real world. There are web sites devoted to fact checking the lies told and the abuse he has heaped on people. He got out of service claiming bone spurs yet had the temerity to say he preferred his heroes weren’t caught when talking about a POW. Your hero has feet of clay, but you right wingers can’t see it. If a left wing leader did a small piece of what Trump is doing you would be going bat guano crazy. None so blind as those who will not see.

The best bit about the zinger is he is so emotionally unstable it would drive him nuts, whilst mature adults would brush it off.

    • Don't have to buy 5g phone because Australia won't get it in 5 years or you can't really afford it when it is ready.

      • it's ready in cbd area among most cities.

  • I have a mate 10 pro for nearly 2 years now. No issues with the phone. Is it worth upgrading to the mate 20?

      • +7

        they removed the blacklist

    • +1

Your Mate 10 Pro has a better screen, I'd at least get a P30/S10e that's OLED too

    • +1

2 years on mate 10 here and can't see much benefit in updating! Your pro would be the more modern slim factor too so this would be wider I imagine (the thing that annoys me most in my regular mate 10)

  • Bought one. Thanks OP.

  • +2

Hmm to commit or not commit…

Bit wary of buying this right now with Amazon Prime Day(s) just around the corner, considering Amazon had it priced pretty similarly recently and that wasn't even Prime Day. Plus you get cashback from Amazon too.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    • +4

Buy now, regret later. Like I just did.

      • Hmm I wonder if I buy one now, whether I could leave collection until after Prime Day, after checking and comparing Amazon's deals. I could always cancel my order from JB's and get a refund right?

        • +3

Guess I'll have to hand in my ozb badge to you.

        • +4

JB Hi Fi change of mind return policy allows you 30 days to return as long as it's unopened.

          • @apprentice: Farewell Huawei Mate 20, it was a bumpy, exhilarating ride, but alas our time together is over…

Helloooooo Samsung Galaxy S10e, where have you been all my life

    • +3

Seems amazon have matched the $599 price, but with jb you get the extra 5% obviously

    • Get a 28 Degrees card. Buy now, claim price protection later in the event Amazon does beat the price.

  • Thanks for posting this deal. Can someone please tell me if it comes with a screen protector like p30? And/or a case?

  • +2

Can vouch for the chipset + software. 6-months in on my M20 Pro (same chip) and this thing is still ridiculously fast and battery life is as it was on day-one unlike my S8+ in the past. Camera is great, but so is every flagship camera these days.

  • +1

    This or the Xiaomi 9T?

    • This is a Huawei Mate 20.

      • +2

Uh yea I'm aware? I was asking for recommendations between the two. I care about camera the most.

        • +1

          Forgive him as it's late

        • -1

Get LG G7 or LG V40, absolute steal of a price for both.

    • +8

I've got the Xiaomi Mi 9T, its pretty good, but i think the mate 20 has better specs.

The benefits of the Huawei Mate 20 are:
      Cat21 modem (1400/200mbps 4g) vs the Cat15 modem (800/150mbps) on the Mi 9T
Kirin 980 is faster, 308k antutu vs 211k, 3401 single core and 10138 multicore geekbench vs 2537 single core and 6863 multicore, 51fps in gfx3.1 manhattan onscreen vs 24fps
      expandable storage (albeit proprietary)
16mp wide angle lens vs 13mp on the Mi 9T
      USB 3.1 vs 2.0
      32bit/384khz audio vs 16bit/192khz audio
less stereo crosstalk when using headphones (thought it was just a reviewer's complaint for the Mi 9T but even when im using my audiotechnica headphones it sounds like youre listening to a mono audio source with no soundstaging)
Infrared port (i used this a bit on my lg v20 at home and sometimes to randomly turn the TV on in pubs when their screens are off)
      22.5w charging vs 18w charging

Benefits of the Xiaomi Mi 9T:
      48mp quad bayer main camera
can film at 1080p240 as well as 720p960
amoled notchless display (i love this the most, i dont use my selfie camera)
      loudspeaker gets a little louder
updates not as uncertain at the present point in time compared to huawei
although the benchmark scores are lower, everything is still fluid, games still run at decent fps

      • Awesome comparison will definitely take this into account

        • +1

One thing I forgot to mention is that the battery life on the xiaomi mi 9T can be better. If you run dark mode for the UI and for apps where possible, you can significantly cut the power consumption of your display.

That being said, the difference in chipset power usage is harder to gauge, hypothetically the xiaomi 9t has a lower peak power usage even though it's on a 8nm manufacturing process, mainly because of the lower clock speeds and more aggressive background process management.

        • +1

Also need to take into account that this has a local, 2-year warranty (vs potentially low/no warranty once the 6-months of PayPal buyer protection runs out for imported phones).

  • Tempting, when will this deal end? Not sure if I should hold out till prime day for so or s10.

    • -5

Most JB-HiFi stocks still showing very high level, all these upvotes appear to be fake. Its easier to see stock level on eBay listing.

All LG G7 grey colour all sold out forever when it was $506.

    • Ends on the 14th

  • If i buy it today, but i only get my e-gift card on Monday, can I go back to them on Tuesday to get a refund and re-purchase to the same $$$? Today is $569.05, but i guess Tuesday will be back to $899.

    Thanks.

  • IP68?

  • -1

They wanna steal your phone data so they can release The Fappening part 2

    • That was an apple security flaw right?

  • Can any owners comment on audio quality of Mate 20 through headphones? Reading that people have had problems with unusually low headphone sound levels (BT and wired)

    • Its far inferior than the quad dac on LG G7 and V40 handsdown ma man.

  • Thanks mate, I placed an order, travelling next month, so I can claim TRS as well

  • Still not significant enough a jump from the Pocophone F1 to justify an upgrade, it does have NFC/better camera but very similar performance and size. Still a great price for a very good handset.

  • Would this be a big step up from the S7? Also will this get support from google and future android release?

    • -5

      No it wont. https://www.androidauthority.com/should-you-buy-huawei-honor…

$500ish is not that much, you can flush it down the drain in worst case. Its not like you're buying $1m house in sydney.

    • +3

Speed-wise, definitely (massive step up from my S8), and the camera will also be noticeably better. Battery life also a large improvement. The display is only LCD though (a decent LCD screen, but no match for the AMOLED panel on the S7).

  • This or Xiaomi mi 9?

    • Get LG instead, the V50 has dual screen.

      • I was so he'll bent on buying Xiaomi mi 9for 48 Mb camera, etc. but have no idea how that compare to this one (Huawei)

        • +2

Tech-wise Xiaomi is no match to Huawei…

        • +2

Mi 9 has a shorter battery life, but better performance (SD855 vs Kirin980) and would most likely get software updates faster/more than the mate 20.

          Edit:
Mi 9: in screen fingerprint reader
          Mate 20: rear fingerprint

Mi 9: OLED, Mate 20: LCD

Mi 9: no IP rating, Mate 20: IP53

          • @flud: Thought IP had something to do with internet connectivity

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: IP in this context means ingress protection. The first number is for solids like dust, the second number is for liquids.

          • +1

@flud: Mi9 also has GCAM support and Custom Firmware. (Pixel Experience)

  • What 4g category is this? Cat 20 cat 16

  • why mate so cheap? cheaper than p20?

    • mate 30 and 30 pro 5G is coming, running OAK OS, baidu, weibo, wechat and alipay pre-installed.

  • Awesome

  • +1

This is like $100 cheaper than it is in China for the 64gb version

Way too cheap for what you get especially if you can claim TRS

Still heaps of stock in VIC though serious brand problem lol

  • Currently only $527.12 at amazon au with the 12% Shopback.

    • Bugger they always match it don’t they!

      $40 ouch

    • Link please

    • +2

Shopback says "Electronics, PC, Camera, Wireless, Mobile Electronics, Home Entertainment, Music Instruments" is 4.5%?

    • +1

It's up to 12% so for phones I think it's like only 4.5%. Only when they have promos from time to time that they offer 12% throughout. Also excludes GST amount. So for $599 the cash back should only be around $25.

Adding to that if you can get JB eGift cards via RACQ GC portal (4% off) etc you should be able to get this for a bit over $550 delivered.

      • +1

        Cool thanks.

I guess the ShopBack cashback buddy is deceiving. When it says "activate up to 12% cashback" it doesn't clarify what category of items that percentage rate applies to. I'll have to remember that.

  • +1

This or the similarly priced Samsung Galaxy A70?

    • As a media consumption device, probably the a70? Depends on your application.

Fact that I have a Samsung shop near for warranty claims is also handy.

    • A70 has a much slower SD chip.
      If performance is a concern.

  • Been waiting for a price like this.
    Pulled the trigger.
    Thanks OP

    • IP53

Is there any reason to not get a LG V30+ instead? They are around $440 with a coupon on eBay. I don't use the camera on smartphones so I don't care about that.

    • What do you take your photos with when you go on holidays?

      • rx100 VA or A7R III

        • +2

fair enuf, lg cam is a doggie dog quality, and the battery is absymal. you buy LG V or G series only for the quad dac.

but why spend $440 on 2 year old phone? spend $100 more on G7 or mate 20.

    • +1

I have a mate 20 and a v30+ the mate 20 is so much better. The battery on the v30+ doesnt last me half a day while the mate 20 lasts a whole day and some

    • How do I get the v30+ at 440?
      Is it grey

      • +1

        sydney mobiles, POLAR20, $446.39

        • Cheers

  • +7

Grabbed this deal this morning. When i got home i discovered that they gave me a mate 20 pro instead. Very happy with the upgrade!

    • Alright now I'm jealous 😒
