Wish this was the HDR display one. Would have jumped on it.

    • +5

You would have broken it if you jumped on that laptop.

      • hahahahaha

        Its funny cause its true

      • lol, that is true if taken i literally did it. haha

    • Yeah same. I’m finding it hard to distinguish the Amazon Carbons with the HDR… AFAIK the WQHD is the HDR right?

      • No they are different. HDR is 500 nits i believe and the WQHD is 300 nits i think. I may be mistaken though.

        • You’re right, I found the definitive answer after I posted. There are 3 options. FHD, WQHD, and WQHD + HDR. I would be happy with regular FHD or WQHD except that they’re just so DIM :(

          • @ChocolateTown: Yup, That is why i was after HDR but i hear it has crap batter life. I guess major trade off there.

            • @parallelparadox: My usage shouldn’t be too affected by less than stellar battery (which I’ve also read), so I can put up with that myself.

      Jeez, high expectations much?

      • -1

It does say wish, it doesnt say i expect it.
Is that what it has come to nowadays, randomly online negging people cause you are bored?

      • The HDR one is much brighter than the other two. For me I need the brightness as my eyes are crap.

  • i'm looking for the WQHD version (non-hdr). Any deals on that?

    • +2

Me too. I'm hoping for a return of this deal however I thought I'd share this one as it's still a great price for this unit. I'll probably pick this one up if the WQHD doesn't go on sale within the next few days.

      • Yeah that deal was perfect. I can't see myself going back to 1080p specially since i am currently using a 4k laptop. WQHD is the perfect balance of battery life and screen sharpness imo.

        • Yeah I agree. I'm currently using an XPS 13 but want to swap across. It's got a 4K display but the battery life is terrible.

          • @AdamFury: Just out of curiosity, can't you change the resolution to 2K?

            • +2

@loropy9: Yeah I definitely can. I actually haven't tried to see how much battery life I would save. I should add it's not the only reason I'm contemplating the Carbon switch. Keyboard and the slightly bigger screen are tempting too.

          • @AdamFury: I'm using the X1 Carbon gen 6 with the HDR screen and the battery life is awful to so don't expect any improvement by moving from the XPS 13.

            • @C0mbat: Thanks for the heads up! I was after the non HDR model but not sure how much of a difference that makes to battery life.

              • +1

@AdamFury: Huge. But then so would going to non 4k on the XPS 13. In fact the XPS non 4k has a much better battery life than the non HDR X1 Carbon as far as I'm aware. These are all things I'm considering right now to as the battery life on my X1 Carbon is annoying me.

            • @C0mbat: I’ll be needing the HDR (or Yoga X1) Carbon, what’s your battery observations in real life? Example just watching a movie/YouTube, or internet scrolling, or typing?

              • @ChocolateTown: Pretty bad but. I haven't tested back to back movies. But I use it for work (typical browsing and office apps) and I'll get about 4-5 hours consistent use out of it. That's with the battery being 1 year old now. It was likely better when new. So I can't get through a full days work without a charger.

      • Me too too. I would contemplate getting a WQHD if it goes on sale.

          https://www.catch.com.au/product/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-carbon-g…

          Wqhd i5 8gb 256SSD + 3yr warranty for $1891

          • @ChocolateTown: Thank for posting @ChocolateTown, this is interesting.. but feels pricey (or have I been on ozbargain too long?)

Is the ram upgradeable? What do people think of this laptop?

            • +1

@ScoobyDo: My understanding is that RAM is not upgradable after you buy, which is why I want to fork out for the 16gb i7. Prob won’t need the i7 but - long story - I deserve it lol.

It’s not a super duper deal, considering there are wqhd i7 16gb for $400 more.

  • DDR3 ram really?

  • If anyone prefers a convertible, the X1 Yoga Gen 3 with similar specs (i5-8350U in the Yoga vs i7-8550U in the Carbon) is $1,699 ($103 more) at CentreCom

Bought one last month but couldn't post it as a deal because it looks like a normal price at CentreCom.

  • Got this cos the i5 went.. bloody fomo! i5 back now :( +240 for i7.. waste of money imo but ohwell the i7 I'll be receiving as they processed and shipped it so fast no chance to change! Good move on their behalf if intentional…

    tldr: super fast shipping

    • Hi, why do you think i7 waste of money?

      • +1

Due to cooling capabilities, often in these ultra thin laptops i7 doesn't gain performance as it gets too hot then gets throttled. For many laptops like Surface Pro, Dell XPS 13 etc, the i5 has better over all consistent performance compared to i7.

        • +1

Beautiful, thank you for the explanation!
