  • I actually need a lawn mower, is there any reason to not go electrical with something like this over petrol powered?

Well for one, the power cord looks like a right pain in the ass unless you have a tiny garden or if you have a real long tradies spec extension cord.

Funnily enough there's no mention of how long the cord is which is really really REALLY germaine information on how big a yard you can do without resorting to an extension.

I guess they are hiding this for a reason. I glanced thru a YT video and it looks like 10 meters?

With petrol these days they are all 4 stroke so you only really have to contend with oil changes per 100hr operation or what have you. They start fine now.

Don't you usually need to BYO power cable for electric mowers/trimmers?

        • Yeah same as trimmers, short cord and byo. Pros for corded electric mower, don't have to buy/store petrol. Don't have to service the motor. Con, sealing with the cord getting tangled or running over it. Battery powered solves this but then you're up for the cost of batteries.

          • @[Deactivated]: Corded one beat all the others in terms of performance and reliability anywhere, i used to have one of this but with 34cm cutting width and it could chew through whatever grass or 1cm twigs without stalling. But the nuisance of being corded means your yard probably doesn't need powerful mower anyway.

I've had one of these Bosch 34cm for 9 years… And seriously considering this upgrade.
The included cord would be around 8m. I have a 20m Heavy Duty Extension as well.

      Pro's:
It's lightweight and dead easy to start (just press and hold 2 buttons) as a result my wife can and these days generally does the mowing!
Zero Maintenance - The ONLY maintenance performed has been to occasionally rehone the blade
      It's quiet(er than a Petrol mower)
It uses my "free" solar power, thereby costing me nothing to run
Not having to remember to get fuel for the mower (or worse, remembering when you're all set to start) and no running out of fuel halfway through the job.
      Low Upfront cost
It has plenty of power. You can choke it up just like any mower, but certainly no loss of power against the 2 strokes I've historically used.

      Cons:
It's pretty flimsy. Everything possible is made of plastic and the height adjustment handle snapped off last week cause something has jammed the mechanism and I pushed on it too hard… Luckily it's stuck at around the right height anyway
Cord Management whilst mowing- You get into a system that makes it less of a problem, but obviously it's something else to think about.

I have no issues with tangles, Youtube how to roll up a rope or extension cord if you are having issues.
Takes me 10 seconds to throw out the cable and plug both ends in ready to roll, and 30 seconds to "roll" it all up again.
Takes me longer to pour and stow the fuel into my parents' Petrol mower.

      My tips:
always start at the point nearest the power outlet
Mow the edges to the length of the mower This is the only time you really need to "worry" about the cord
Then mow stripes back and forth with the cord running between your legs. Your legs steer the cordand keep it clear of the mower's path automatically.

    • I’m totally on a mission to get rid of our petrol power tools. Only the mower and hedge trimmer to go. Would prefer battery, but this is so cheap…worth a try!

  • I use something similar to this just for the nature strip (11m X 3m) for the last 5 years. Works a treat (got a really long extension cord), and haven't run over it yet

  • Oh well I bought it at full price from Amazon yesterday..FML

    • Pretty sure Amazon will refund you

    • Order another and return the other. Easily solved. Yes, it will cost you to return it, but you'll be well ahead.

    Note that this is corded.
I am still hoping to see the old Bosch Rotak Li battery model on sale. :(

  • Used to own this mower, absolute garbage- even on mildly high grass it would cut out. I had to always cut at the highest setting, move down to mid cut, then finally lowest.

    • Wow, that's a completely different experience to me, I wouldn't expect the extra 3cm over my 34cm to make that much difference!

Battery powered mower is the best for a typical house. You will be mowing hundreds of times, so you want it to be as easy as possible.

  • Bought one, thanks OP

  • Damn! Unavailable……
