only $100 more for the new model 256 version https://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro

      the newer version sucks
      1. speaker
      2. one fan
      3.weaker cpu

      • -2

the new company sucks after jobs passed

      • Sucks compared to?

        • Compared to 2018 which is in this deal, the low end 2019 model which the person I replied to linked

      • Pretty sure you're thinking of the new 128gb model

        • The person he was responding to had to be using that new low end model optioned to 256GB as the comparison as the other 2019 ones are much more expensive

only $100 more for the new model 256 version

Indeed I was referring to the comparison between 2018 mbp 13 vs 2019 mbp 13 low end
          1. 2 thunderbolt vs 4 thunderbolt
          2. 2 fans vs 1 fan
          3. Speakers were downgraded
          4. Weaker cpu with lower tdp
          5. More expensive for no reason
Conclusion: with this price there is no reason to buy 2019, 2018 is more than adequate and offers more value for the price given ( although that is a joke anyway for Apple products)

@XanderYuan: FWIW a review of the new model I saw said the 2019 units fan rarely ever spins up and as a result they found the 2019” Pro to be the quietest MacBook Apple has (given the 12” is gone) and it was quieter than the model it replaced also.

Could be advantage for some if the model in the long run works fine with less cooling requirements.

Agree on the other points though.

  • 10% @ JB Hifi on Mac - I think it ends today as well.

  • -1

Officeworks have price matched JB on the 10% off so you can’t do price beat with them.

  • $2299, and then 10% off, on the new 2019 version. JB

dont bother with touchbar, it's a gimmick

    • Weaker cpu with lower tdp

If you looked at the base clock speed, yes. However, the 2019 model's CPU turbo boost clock speed is higher. From the benchmark I saw, they are very close with 2019 even beating the 2018 (only just) in single core. The lower TDP is also a plus (low base clock could be to achieve less power draw when idle). You want lower TDP. Basically, the 2018 CPU, while "probably" faster, was done using more electricity. One year later, intel finally managed to boost the performance on the lower TDP CPU range. The embedded GPU on the 2018 is a slightly better model (I think, need to double check).

4 TB3 ports are more flexible. Though the 2019 model would have a slightly better keyboard design (though the butterfly keyboard design is still …. rubbish).

      • not sure about that when you face sustained load, 2 fans will out perform 1 fan for better airflow

        • you need more fans if the cpu is generating more heat, since the new cpu has a lower TDP means less heat, no need for the noise of 2 fans, and longer battery

          • @asa79: Might be true(haven’t seen any results yet), but also 2019 has less airflow from design (2018 has 2 sides open, 2019 uses a different thermal solution and has less exposure)
My guess is that the performance difference is going to be very minimal
Graphics should be slightly better tho
But paying 100 more is not worth it for in my view an inferior model

            • @XanderYuan: Geekbench results:

              Macbook Pro 13" i5 2018 : 4451 / 16453
              Macbook Pro 13" i5 2019*: 4639 / 16665

(*) 2019 entry model, not the top end 4 TB3 model. Honestly, the best I can state is that this is a toss up and margin for error result (even though that new 2019 low power CPU is quite formidable). I actually think Apple purposely down clocked that 2019 CPU a little bit so it won't upset 2018 MPB Pro owners. Single fan is enough because that CPU is more power efficient (needs less power to operate) and putting two fans and boost that clock speed will make 2018 MPB looks bad and the 2019 i5 4 ports version looks lackluster.

2018 MPB has a better embedded GPU, but 2019 entry level MBP's GPU has a higher clock - so it is basically yet another toss up / tie.

                • @Smigit: I know/knew. Why do you think I replied to the initial comment about the CPU? It's 28W vs 15W TDP (close to 50% less). Therefore, it is not a surprise with 1 fan design.

It is common sense really. After the 2018 MBP 15 inch thermal issue, it doesn't make sense for Apple to mess it up for 2019 MBP. That CPU is a good CPU (it was what the 2018 MBP 13 inch CPU should have been last year - rather than boost the power usage to get the performance).

                  • @netsurfer: Wasn't debating you but adding an extra source to backup your statement

Single fan is enough because that CPU is more power efficient

The fact this system needs a single fan vs two to me is an advantage, not a disadvantage. It further is reinforced by the review I saw on TheVerge where by the reviewer also found that single fan to rarely spin up, so the machines quieter due to its reduced need for active cooling than any other Macbook model other than the now end of life 12" passively cooled MacBook. Few things annoy me more with a mobile PCs than when I can constantly hear fans running.

  • I've seen a few of these deals come up recently so had a quick squiz in the local Apple store. Checked out both the MacBook Pro 13" and the new MacBook Air. How crap are those keyboards?!! I'll be hanging onto my late 2013 until they sort that out.

    • Don’t buy them now then, rumor suggests that they are bring back the keyboards

    • Personally I don't mind them and their minimal key travel, but the reliability is a concern I have. While it's nice there's a 4 year or whatever program, I can't overlook the fact that I'm only now wanting to upgrade my 2011 MBP almost 8.5 years after I purchased it. Four years might do for most but chances are whatever I buy we'll use for some time be it myself or a hand me down to our wife or son.

Gonna wait until October and see what they do. If there's a new KB I hope it's not limited to the rumoured 16" model.

  • Can't upgrade that SSD. Can't upgrade the RAM. It's already a two year old spec machine. Maybe suitable for casual users.
