Anti social neighbour

So my neighbour has been steadily waiting for my bin to be emptied each week in the early morning, and refill my bin with at least half full of extra rubbish right after the garbage truck put it down on my natural strip, then he happily wheeling his own empty bin back to his property.

Apart from talking to him, which doesn't seem to have any effect, what else can I do?

Council said they don't have the manpower for this and wish me good luck.

Take his bin and do a big one

    • +16

OP have you actually spoken to him?

A neighbour was dumping large black bags in the garbage room (blocking the doorway and garbage shute) for months until I caught the guy.

I sternly said 'Hey mate are you the guy putting black rubbish bags here every other day'. 'Yea for the cleaners'. 'Actually mate that's me moving it every night'. 'Ohhh in India cleaners would do that'.

Now we both know that he was playing dumb, and being Indian or being from India had absolutely nothing to do with it but I played along and said make sure it goes in the chute moving forward.

      Hasn't happened since.

People do shit because they think they're getting away with it. Once they're in the red for it, they quickly backflip the behaviour.

      • +1

WTH? Surely would’ve taken him 30 seconds longer to just put them in the chute himself?

        • +8

Yes but then what will the cleaners do?

If not for him the cleaners would be out of work.

  • +72

Record him doing this. Then dump his rubbish back onto his property.

    • +19

Don't be confrontational about it either. Just dump it back in.

If he tries it next time, dump it back in again without confrontation.

If he tries it a third time, then I think you need to speak to him. I wouldn't mention the video unless it escalates as that could make the situation worse.

      • +4

I wonder if the OP stood in clear view as the neighbour went to do it, if the neighbour would still go through with it or abort mission?

Although if he did continue, and OP said/did nothing, then they will likely see that as permission to keep doing it…

    • +5

Someone I know did this. They just dumped the rubbish back on the neighbour's lawn (they confirmed who the neighbour was because on of their letters was in the bin). It stopped happening after they did it once.

      • +1

I would make sure the rubbish inside the bags are on the lawn instead of just the bags.

    • +2

I like this. Sends a message without having to be confrontational.

  • +28

    Bikies…

  • +10

Apart from talking to him, which doesn't seem to have any effect, what else can I do?

What did he say when you spoke to him previously?

  • +14

Jog to his front door and poop

    • +8

Dont start a poop war on the first day of battle

      • +28

        day 2 for number 2?
        .

    • +4

      bag of flaming poo

    • +15

Are you crazy? You think that's the only issue with this gross, aggressive violation of privacy and personal space?

        • +21

If it was the night before, then sure fair game. But not 10 seconds after the trucks gone past before hes able to bring the bin back in - the neighbour has his own grubby bin to chuck it in

          • +4

@k-rokfm: which is why I suggest a compromise that would suit both parties. If we paid our waste levy by bin weight the possible solution would be different.

I've seen too many minor neighbourhood feuds escalate out of control. It's not worth it.

            • +7

@brad1-8tsi: Don't understand the negs or why people are against this solution. Who cares if he fills up your bin after you've taken it out. Typically once you've taken your bin to the street you aren't adding more waste to it anyway. Any extra space in the bin is free range I reckon.

Filling it up after it's been collected is another matter though.

              • @Name: Read it again. He is doing after the bin has been emptied.

                • +1

@rogerm22: Yeah, but re-read Brad1-8tsi's comment. He is suggesting talk to the neighbour and offer up any empty space the night before the bins get collected by Council.

              • +1

@Name: I'm not sure either, brad1-9tsi's solution is actually probably one that gets close to a win-win in unfortunate circumstances, OP does have to live next to this neighbour, even if he is a d…head

        • -1

Where I live 50% of the bins are on the street

You're supposed to take your bin back in after it gets emptied.

          • +1

@smartazz104: It's a high density area full of 100+ year old terrace houses. I don't know why people don't bring their bins in but in the 1.5km walk home I'd pass ~1500 red/yellow/green bins. I'm assuming because it isn't practical to wheel them through the house.

I'm in a townhouse complex so we have a guy that brings our bins down to the basement bin area.

            • +5

              @brad1-8tsi:

but in the 1.5km walk home I'd pass ~1500 red/yellow/green bins

This'd be like Christmas for OP's neighbour.

            • @brad1-8tsi: +1 for wheeling bin through house as the reason. Some houses have a small area in front of the house to store bins, bicycles etc, others do not have a practical space to store bins and don't want to track the bin through the house. Speaking for a friend….

      • +2

It's irrefutably wrong, but it's not remotely a gross violation of privacy nor is it particularly aggressive.

    • +4

Ye this appeasement policy didnt work even in the late 1930's

      • +1

Godwin escalation already in the thread?

    • +2

yeh, but, what I don't get is that his neighbour is putting (stored?) rubbish into his bin right after the garbage truck leaves. This kinda means that both his and his neighbours bins have no empty space. What his neighbour should be doing is to request a second bin from the council and pay for its associated cost.

      • +4

Why pay extra when he can put it in his neighbour's bin for free?!

        • +14

The OP has been ozbargained by an expert.

    • +3

Reasonable…. but reasonable solutions tend not to work well with unreasonable people, which is what OP's dealing with here. Applaud you for considering the high road option though.

    • +1

If they weren't assholes, I'd be cool with neighbours using our remaining bin space before it's emptied, as long as they leave room for another bag in case we need it, it's usually about 3/4 empty anyway. But I like the emptying the rubbish on neighbour's lawn idea better for this one.

  • +20

Hire a company to dump an entire skip of garbage onto his front yard when he's not home, then deny any knowledge of it.

    • +2

So that he can put it all back in OP's bin???!

      • +2

hahahah thats exactly what would happen!

  • +77

    Have footage of his actions.

Next time he does it, give a final and written warning.

Future incidents, just tip his trash at his front door. It is his property, you're returning it as it doesn't belong in your bin. He will still be responsible of the bags break and rubbish spreads.

    • +5

      This is the correct answer.

    • +3

I like this solution. You win the internet.

      • +28

Thank you. This is my second internet.

    • Exactly what I would have done, first time tipped at the front door, if it happened again then over the back fence breaking the bag.

    • I thought once it hits the curb, it's officially the council's property?
Also written warning of what exactly? Dumpling rubbish illegally in someone else's property?

Not trying to be smart - I literally don't know.

      • I thought once it hits the curb, it's officially the council's property?

If that's true, we are going to have a huge litter problem.

      • In the USA once the garbage is left at the curb it's public property .. but in Australia there's a moot point attached to such bins!
        https://www.sydneycriminallawyers.com.au/blog/dont-throw-any…

        • As there are no specific laws to protect your garbage as it’s sitting on the side of the road, it’s best not to throw anything into your bins that could implicate you in a crime.

Hmm, sounds like what the neighbour is doing could go either way. Personally I'd say the law would side with the victim but still, it's unsettling theres no specific law for this.

          God speed OP

  • +18

I am staying here. This thread is fun.

    • +4

      Share my pop corn? O"O

      • +9

Don't forget to put the empty popcorn container in OP's bin after next collection…

    • +9

What would happen to this forum if we didn't have traffic incidents and neighbour disputes?

      • +6

It'd turn into a soulless pit… aka Whirlpool.

PS. be careful kolorijo, its not salt Chris is putting into that popcorn.

        • +1

Hence I am still contemplating Chris' offer :D

          • @kolorijo: Hey kahn and anyone else interested, there's plenty of salt for all, we might need more pop corn though.

  • +1

Maybe tape a note with bold letters inside your bin before you put it out? If he sees it, he will realise that someone knows what he has been up to?

    • The OP makes it sound like he's already tried to talk to him about it, so he should know…

  • +28
    1. Fill his wheelie bin with mix of water, off milk, shit, vomit, prawn heads and anything else that smells.
    2. Lean bin against his front door.
    3. Knock on door.
    4. Hide and grab some popcorn.
    • +21

Shouldn't there be a 'wash your hands' step in there somewhere?

      • +6

        No.5 Wash my hands

        • +4

          No.5 3.5 Wash my hands.

Surely we want to wash our hands before grabbing the popcorn

          • +2

@aussieolfaction: He fills his wheelie bin with mix of water, off milk and shit. See what happens next!

Gosh titles like that trigger me like you wouldn't believe

  • +20

Oh, how about, if there's documents in there, try to collate enough personal information to start applying for credit/loans under his name and then ruin his credit by buying stuff and not paying for it?

    • +10

Or do that jerkoff's taxes, next year the ATO is gonna audit the piss out of him!

      • +12

Hey now, ease up there Satan…

    • +2

Thats some real George Costanza style revenge!

      • +1

Well, the Jerk Store called, and they're running out of you.

        • +1

What's the difference? You're their all time best seller!

  • Put some stuff in his recycling bin that cant be recycled so he gets a warning from the council

    • +5

That doesn't happen. Truck drivers don't care, they take anything.

      • Guess mine care when a holes decided to put Styrofoam amongst random crap in mine and I got an audit.

        • I have a neighbour who puts anything in and it always goes. Once had a tangled garden hose at the top hanging out.

    • Not direct enough if he doesn't know who did it or why

  • +31

Leave a glitter bomb inside your bin with the trigger tied to the lid.
When he opens the lid - boom!
    Glitter all over the w@anker.

    • +2

Love it. Is there any problem that a glitter bomb can't fix?!

      • +2

An insatiable love of glitter bombs?

    • +9

The guy's dumping his rubbish in OP's bin AFTER it's been picked up by the garbo. All the glitter bomb is gonna do is redecorate the garbage truck…

  • -2

Just be ready for when the garbage truck comes and get your bin inside before he can do this. Also put a padlock on your bin. On another note, who the hell has 1.5x a normal bins worth of rubbish every week?! That seems really excessive. We barely fill ours up 1/3 in a week.

    • +1

How would the padlock work with the garbage truck?

      • +1

Leave it on until the night before collection

        • +11

The crazy neighbour is filling empty bin as soon as the truck leaves.

          • @Stewardo: I'm picturing a Formula 1 pitstop of unlocking the picklock as the garbage truck rolls in and locking back up as soon as it hits the ground.

        • +5

How do people get this far into a thread/post without reading the OP? Unless it has been edited?
