Costco (Melbourne) 3DS $278

320

Just picked up a 3DS from Costco for $278 - they looked fairly well stocked too! Confirmed AU model.

side note - Awesome 4ft high Stuffed Soft Teddy Bears for $40 too!!! Too Cuddly to resist!!

Anyone know of a site that lists the Melbourne Costco Price list (just to help make my Bulk Shopping a little easier, and possibly lower the amount of 'Spontaneous Purchases' I keep making when I go there! *8vD

NOTE: forgot to mention that you need to be a Member! (Sorry - I completely forgot! Thanx for the reminder)
I have 4 Kids, and really Love all the BULK discounts that Costco have - if you have a Large Family, or want to 'Shop with a Friend' to purchase all your shopping together, then you can rest assured that your yearly shopping costs will be Drastically reduced!
Occasionally they don't quite meet the 'Specials' that may be on in Major Supermarkets, but the overall discount is well worth it! - again, if you are happy to buy in Bulk!

30 eggs for under $5 is our biggest sales pitch to friends… everything else is just indicative of that discount. *8vD

  • Don't you need to be a member to purchase from Costco? (and memebership is $60/yr)

    • +1

Yes, it seems to be a deal only for members but if you live near a Costco, you'd be a fool not to have a membership. I haven't been to an Aussie Costco, but if it's anything like the American ones, you can basically make back your yearly membership fee in your first week grocery savings.

      • That is why I already have a membership when the store isn't opened yet.

  • yeah, so technically if you're not a member it's $278 +$60=$338, but still good price if you're a member(or know someone who is!)

  • Membership is yearly and is fully refundable within a year. Note that you won't be able to sign up for a membership after another year has passed.

Kmart has these for $288 at launch.

Given sales of the 3DS it won't be long until they drop the price (especially when the PSV is out).

    • +3

I don't get why you got negged on that, perfectly valid point.

      • +2

Doubtful, the reason the sales were (are) so low was because of the lack of varied titles at launch. Most people don't buy Nintendo to play Rayman, they buy it for Mario. With the upcoming first-party releases scheduled I would be surprised if there is a price drop. I don't think there will be a price drop until they release a revised model which is probably about 18-24 months away.

        • +2

I agree with this, I only bought one on launch because I guessed it would be the best time to get a good deal, I'm patiently waiting for games like Mario Kart 3DS to come out.

    • +1

The launch day is always when retailers expect to sell the most consoles, it's like box office weekends. So the 3DS deals were always best at the beginning as they try to undercut each other (still haven't seen anyone come close to that $277 Dick Smith + game combo since)

As for dropping the 3DS RRP? Doubt it. Nintendo hardly ever drops console prices, and even then it's usually when it's on its last legs. They usually just sweeten the deal by throwing in more games and accessories so it becomes better value later on.

Cant wait till they have Costco in Sydney.

    • I agree - it will put pressure on the likes of Harvey Norman…

      • Until a customer walks into Costco and asks the difference between LCD and Plasma and receives a blank stare….

(Sure it still happens at some Harveys, but you see my point- totally different markets)

Anyway, back to the HN bashing…

        • What is the difference between the two? They're just two different kinds of turds, only one smells worse than the other (I'll let you guess which one that is).

        • you always have to choose between a turd and a douche?
          internetz for correct reference

        • .

    • Hopefully they open in July at Auburn NSW =P

There's a site called Fairdinks that basically resell Costco items but they charge about a 15% premium on what Costco charges (from the products I've looked at)… For example they list the 3DS at $324.98 which is about 15% more than the Costco price. Nonetheless they still give you an idea of what Costco stocks.

    www.fairdinks.com.au

    • Wow.. Funky Site! Great Concept! Wonder if Costco know they are doing this!?? *8vD
Certainly doesn't convey the 'Bargain' aspect of Costco, but definitely gives a taste of the variety and provides the convenience of delivery! As well as avoiding the 'costco membership' that sooo many ppl seem fearful of! *8vD

      • They know, apparently it's an ex-employee!?

    • lol @ American "Dole" branded canned fruits. Can't see that doing too well here in Australia (unless you're actually on the dole).

      • U can get Dole brand fruits and nuts at Coles Woolies. Remember Bob Dole?

$278 is the standard price at Costco. Saw it back in April.

Costco is an unusual store. I visited the Melbourne outlet out of interest and was stopped at the door. You're not even allowed to walk in and have a LOOK without handing over your details and getting a free day pass. Hopefully they'll come to Adelaide some time.

    • Yeah, saw it the last few times I went. Prices are neat but it is only worth it if you already are a member - No point forking out $60 just for this one DS.

      • +1

Yes very true! I actually forgot that membership is even required.
We take friends on Shopping runs, where we essentially all put in an amount, and just grab all the things that we all want, and split them once we're at home.
Members are entitled to bring a friend on each visit - and each member can have 2 cards for the household, so we tend to take two friends when we both go, and shop big! *8vD

Certainly not a Bargain if you don't intend on shopping at Costco on a Regular basis, or if you don't know of anyone who is already a Member.

        • Depends what you're buying, the $60 membership fee can be recouped in seconds when purchasing say a Longines watch. I bought one for my partner's 40th that was $500 less than the cheapest price I could find out and about. Costco has enormous buying power! Apparently they are the largest purchaser of diamonds in the world!

    • Can you get a day membership just to see what is on offer in store? I don't want to burn $60 on membership if I'm not going to use it.

      • Yes, but you need to go to the service desk and give them your ID and address. Alternatively, you can just walk in with someone who has a card. A day pass won't let you buy anything except for things in the food court which are pretty good value. As mentioned before, you can get a membership, buy your item, then cancel your membership and get your $60 back.

      • There's a money back guarantee. If your not happy with the Costco membership model then they'll refund your $60.

  • For those looking for a 3DS I'd probably wait till the end of this month, that's when Zelda OoT is released. So far it seems like a must-have game from the reviews. So I'd hold out till Zelda is released and bundled. Plus the 3DS game library is not really that impressive at the moment anyway.

    • There isn't any bundle SDK. Individual shops might run their own promotions to pack it in, but they won't be particularly good value. Now's a good a time as any.

      • Based on the amount of stock of the game being sent to stores there will certainly be a bundle that includes the 3DS and Zelda and it will be a very competitive price. If you're interested, hold off until next week and check what stores like Big W, Target, Dick Smith and JB Hi-Fi are doing in terms of bundles.

  • what's the size of the eggs? 80g?

    • no

      • +2

How ridiculous!? As an example, you can pre-order Mario Cart from EStarLand for $43 hence Costco is cheaper!

    • -8

Who is going to pay $60 for annual Costco membership? Melbourne Costco is in the city and you have to pay tolls to get there.

      • +2

Huh!? Depends where you live my friend. Nunawading to Docklands…no tolls on Eastlink! :)

EDIT - Thanks for the neg btw. :P

        • -3

          But it's a 55km round trip!

  • Why Costco Australia never publish any catalogue to attract customers?

    • +1

If you go there on a weekend you'll understand why….they just don't have to. They do just nicely without a catalogue. They do however, send out emails to members with discounts off normal prices for certain products etc. I haven't seen one for a while so they are not a regular thing though.

  • -2

I have been to Melbourne's Costco warehouse in Dockland once, and not plan to revisit again. I didn't even enter the store, because was refused for not possessing membership card.

Why not revisit?not because their products are not price competitiv, but:

    1)Hard to access
    2) Lack of free car parking (some savings will be offset by car park expense)
    3) Too long waiting queue for getting to the car park.

If the warehouse is located in suburbs like Dandenong,Cheltenham,Frankston etc with ample free parking, I will definitely go and pay for annual membership.

    • Melbourne is nothing more than a test market. Let's see how they address your concerns in Auburn.

    • +1

before anyone listens to this guy and believes him, getting to Costco in Melbourne Docklands is easy from any direction, parking is free for 2 hours (and only a small fee afterwards…not sure how much since ive never had to stay for more than 2 hours), and like any shopping centre parking gets busier depending on the day/time you go… deal with it.
I went last saturday afternoon (cant pick a busier time) and i was parked and inside within 5 mins.

Sounds like we just have a butthurt tightarse here who drove all the way after getting lost due to no GPS, Melways, or common sense of direction and without reading up on Costco before, thus not realising you have to be a member, so he had a cry and went back home.

PS. Every time ive been, on entry noone has checked for a membership card. Only on the way through the checkout will they check and stop you from buying if you dont have it.

      herp derp.

      • +1

Really?! When I was a member they always checked my card on entry. I'm from the SE suburbs and always found it relatively easy getting there, albeit a bit far, but getting home was terrible. Usually went there on a Thursday arvo around 3:30-4pm and was outta there by 6pm. Traffic was unavoidable. I guess on weekends it might be better?…

I'd agree that they should have another lift but in my experience there weren't very many queues for the lift and if there were, they weren't that long. As for car parking, 2 hours was just enough. They should perhaps keep it free for the first 2 hours and then an extra hour or if you buy something at Costco.

The reason I didn't renew wasn't because the prices weren't competitive but because it was simply too far too travel (petrol/time). I just thought I'd try it for a year and see how it went. If they built one closer to me (<40 mins travel) I'd probably renew my membership.

    • +2

I agree - Costco Docklands blows. It has one tiny little lane to enter & leave the car park from. The car park itself is always too crowded, and I don't like that it's on a different level to the entrance of the store. In the US, most of the Costco car parks are outdoors. This means there is always a huge queue for the one lift they have. That said, the store itself on the inside is nice enough, and just as good as any US Costco. Another annoyance is the number of Americans who seem to shop there.

      • +3

Or instead of using the one lift they have you could walk the extra 100 metres around past the tyre centre and in to the car park from there. Chances are you'll beat the people waiting for the lift.

  • I've been to Costco in Taiwan and it was great savings buying Prime beef there.
They had some RL polos, Philips electric shavers, terrific selection of confectionary and an ok bakery.
It's pretty random as they even sell Breitling watches costing some AU$15,000.
Costco's own pizzeria was pretty tasty too.
And all this for a small membership fee I'll be happy to pay anyday.

    • OMG Yes!!! The PIZZERIA!! 18" Pizza for $14.50!!! Piled toppings, with Delicious Cheese!! Guaranteed Heart Condition if you try to eat it all yourself!! But Great for a Family Feed!!! *8vD
      - and yes, that's 18 Inches wide of Pure Pizza Heaven!!! *8vD (can be purchased per slice if desired)

Also try the Fruit Smoothie/Slushie drink! Yummo!! *8vD

Ironic that while your username is SYNTAX you randomly capitalise words.

I want to go there just to look around, but it says you can't get in with out a membership. How am I meant to know if I want a membership to somewhere when I can't even see a list of prices or what they sell? :(

    • Read comments above. Details on how to enter without becoming a member and how to get a snapshot of what they sell but not necessarily the price.

  • If Costco follows the Aldi model, have more stores in other suburbs and advertise their specials, I'll shop there.
