Asus RT-AX92U 2-Pack Tri-Band Wifi6 802.11AX System $490 C&C ($390 after Asus Cashback) @ Harvey Norman

210

Fast and secure, the Asus AX AiMesh RT-AX92U 2-Pack Tri-Band WiFi System lets you establish stable, high-speed wireless network connections at home for your multiple smart devices. Using the latest wireless standard (802.11ax), it offers improved network efficiency, greater coverage, and faster WiFi speeds for compatible connected devices.

This is a two-pack mesh networking system - the main difference with the other products on the market (e.g. Google Wifi, Netgear Orbi, Tenda MW6/MW3) is that it uses 4x4 MU-MIMO 802.11ax (Wifi6) as backhaul between the two nodes (I understand there is a hardware revision of the tri-band Orbi devices due later this year, but the AX92U appears to be first to market).

Harvey Norman currently have 20% off Networking, which coupled with the cashback deal makes this a fairly sharp price. I picked up a set this afternoon - very happy with setup and performance.

Might buy it to give it a test run as having WiFi 6 as the backhaul is smart. Good discussion with ASUS answering questions on Whirlpool

Wireless backhaul is never a good idea if you can use wired instead. Radio is a shared medium, no matter how good the algorithms. Stick to units that offer mesh backhaul over wire.

802.11ax is a huge improvement over previous generations though, where ac was mostly just a speed boost. 802.11ax brings back 2.4ghz but deals with noise and interference so much better among many improvements.

The Cisco and Meraki doco is better read.

      • My house is decked out with Ubiquiti and I work with Cisco Meraki all the time. As I said for testing ;) Besides it's no longer proper mesh WiFi when you have wired backhaul.

        • Still not sure what direction I'm going - i don't like the forced NAT on google wifi but it's very simple and performs well. I'm not happy with the Unifi controllers so far. Decisions…

(work on Aeronet but would prefer if we used Meraki tbh..)

@yanman: Could I ask why aren't you happy with the Unifi controllers?

          • @yanman: Install it on a rpi, synology nas etc etc. no need to have the physical controller if that is your worry :.

  • +1

That's quite a sharp price. I'm running a Synology ac2600 but unsure if this is that much faster?

  • Not the nicest looking devices ever but the Wifi 6 makes it a tempting proposition

i really don't see a point of buying highend-home-consumer router, as for half the price, you can almost get a very good intel based router like this one, its basically a tiny pc, but you can do anything with it.

i know not every one is able to DIY, but there are tons of yt video and 450$is such a rip-off.

This is brand new (802.11ax/"Wifi6") wireless - that's what the price is for. Routing adds very little to the price.

      • Additionally it's a two-pack - after cashback it's cheaper than the aliexpress thing linked.

Purchased - very happy with the performance, I have been using powerline adapters AV2000 and the performance from these two units is around 4x better! highly recommend.

  • just purchased this @harveynormanknox which was marked @$478. Also picked up a rt-ax88u for $401. lets see how this aimesh goes :)

  • This or netgear orbi rbk50

    • +1

This should be superior to the current model RBK50, although a revision that supports AX is due in the second half of this year (which should be more comparable)

      • New Orbi will be much more expensive

  • i wish i saw this, before purchasing the GT-AX11000, yesterday.

i'm stuck without WRT-Merlin firmware for a while now :-\

EDIT: No LAN switch-ports is a deal-breaker for me.

    • EDIT: No LAN switch-ports is a deal-breaker for me.

What do you mean? There are four gigabit ethernet ports on each node

      • I'm sorry.

I visited 1 x blog, whose review showed all the pictures of the RT-AX92U except a photo of the LAN ports.

In my haste and quick reading of "wireless backhaul" led me to thinking that this did not have 'LAN ports'.

        This is my bad.

    • Merlin has stated that he will not be making custom firmware for the GT-xxxx series of routers. Too low volume, niche product and cost will prevent high uptake.

      • yes, i'm aware of this.
you can't even get DD-WRT or Tomato, for any of the GT-xxxx series of routers.

all of this because, i FOMO'd into the GT-AX11000 because Bing Lee decided to remove the AX88u from their eBay shopfront.

RT-AX95U is identical to the GT-AX11000, so you might be in luck eventually https://wikidevi.com/wiki/ASUS_RT-AX95U

        • lol, I am the reverse. Got the RT-AX88U, then in hindsight figured the GT-AX11000 would’ve been better suited to what I wanted to do with AIMesh… since I am not fussed about running Merlin atm…

          • @FarQ: want to swap the RT-AX88U for my GT-AX11000 ? :-P

only used, less than 1-day now ;-D

PS: Merlin supports AiMesh now (with RT-AX88U too)

and you should consider Merlin's firmware, because ASUS are slow to patching the bugs in the firmware.

            • +1

@whyisave: sure, i would have to give u a cash adjustment as the GT is more expensive! lol, are you in melb?

              • @FarQ: i'm in SYD, but it's alright :-)

i'll have just have to hold onto hope, that Merlin releases his firmware.
( also, ASUS will be bringing out WPA3 for the GT-AX11000 in 2019-Q4 )

anyway, i will test the GT-AX11000 for the remainder of this week,
and so far, it's been alright and not much difference to my older RT-AC5300.

( i just find all that over-the-top ROG gaming interface / configuration design, a bit much. i would like a more milder interface! :-D )
