Asus RT-AX88U AX6000 Dual Band 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 Router $401 Pickup (+ $7.95 Delivery) & $50 eGift Card from ASUS @ Harvey Norman

150

Hi all,

I was pretty bummed out that I missed the Bing Lee eBay deal, but found this while looking around.

It's cheaper than the Bing Lee deal, not sure if any other shops will do a price match for this offer.
There were no promo codes that applies to this deal from my 15 mins of testing.

50$ cashback for this router - e-gift card redemption
Copied from the previous RT-AX88U post: Asus Cashback promo ($50 for RT-AX88U) (asuspromotion.net)

Same Wifi 6 goodness for anyone thinking of a gaming setup and/or smart home setup. Quite a well reviewed device although it does not have WPA3.

Have a nice day all!

  • can it be used for FTTC connection? currently has ADSL2+ contract for another few months then will change to NBN

    • +1

      I think so.

Either what CC123 said, or you go for a DSL variant like: ASUS DSL-AC88U

Though far from ideal as you'll transition to NBN in a few months.

  • Can it microwave food?

    • +4

Yes, obviously. All routers, built since 1833, that adhere to MicroSec v0.1 standard, can microwave food.

    • No, and I prefer a gaming device that can toast instead: https://www2.razer.com/breadwinner

I picked up the AX11000 today from HN. At $100 cashback, i daresay thats a better deal.

    • Strange it doesn't have 8 ethernet ports?

      • yeah the focus of the AX11000 is really on the wireless. Phones work great, the latest ones already support AX.

        • I'm tossing up between the AX88U and the AX11000. Normally they cost $529ish vs $769ish but with my leftover gift cards from the Amex deal and the cashback, the difference is only about $68 instead of $240.

I believe the AX11000 doesn't support Merlin but not really a deal breaker for me. I currently run an AC86U with Merlin and it's been stable and great in general.

I see that there's a lot of discussion on the AX88U on whirlpool and SNB forums but not so much on the AX11000 hence my reservations on going all out with the AX11000. I doubt it will become this cheap for awhile hence why I'm on the fence between both.

What factors made you decide on the AX11000 over the AX88U?

          • +1

@escusemay: in hindsight i would get the GT-AX11000 over the RT-AX88U if u plan on using AIMesh. As it is a tri-channel setup, it will use the 2nd AX 5Ghz channel for the backhaul when combined with the likes of the RT-AX92U AIMesh units. Aside from that, internally the specs are near identical other than one has 8 LAN ports, whilst the other has tri-channel. Thats if you're not fussed about running Merlin FW.

    • Wow Asus routers have become different beasts since AC68U.

  • Can i use it woth Belong 4353 Modem/router on FTTN NBN connection ?

  • +1

If you set up a VPN on it, can it reach at least 100mbps?

Most of the modems go up to about 20 with a vpn.

    • -2

That depends on your vpn server really. Even with lightning fast internet and horrible vpn server, you still get low speed.

      • yea na… my VPN, on Desktop reaches to 90mbps easily. I also have it permanently on the router RT-AC68U, speeds up to 20mpbs max.

Reason is because the router's cpu power is limited.

        • that is true, but the rt-ac68u runs a dual-core 800mhz cpu with 128mb flash & 256mb ram. The rt-ax88u runs a quad-core 1.8ghz cpu with 256mb flash & 1gb ram. I am upgrading my rt-ac88u (dual-core 1.4ghz cpu, 128mb flash, 512mb ram) with the rt-ax88u and going to also hookup a pair of rt-ax92u for aimesh and see how that goes.

  • +1

It has hardware encryption so it will get you over 20mbps but the rest will depend on what encryption you use and what VPN company. Previous ones didn't have hardware encryption which relied on CPU power to do the encryption

  • I would wait a year at least before picking up any AX devices. Even if hardware is ready, firmware is notoriously bad. Give them a year to iron out the bugs and don’t pay $$$ to be a beta tester.

  • Can someone recommend me a high quality NBN ready router for a fairly small house that has thick concrete walls?

    • +1

basic router and several access points will always do a better job.

  • damn, that was $60 i will never get back. didn't know H/N would have this kind of big discount. ac86u was being sold for $449 for a very long time. only a handful of people managed to get a deal for around $350….

  • Can this be bridged to NBN Telstra Gen 2 modem and maintain 4G backup and VOIP services?

  • anyone filled out the ASUS cashback redemption form?
did you receive some type of written confirmation, that the form submission was successful?

    • +1

I asked the same question on Whirlpool and got the following response from the ASUS guy that's answering question…
"Our redemption team will confirm your submittion manually once they checked the details are correct.
Please make sure the details provided meets the T&C, where the serial number must be on the unit and not the packaging box. We have had a few rejections in previous promotions because of that. Please read the T&C carefully before making the submit your redemption."

Just FYI on this deal I bought the AX11000 to use as the CAP and then the pair of RT-92's to use as satelites. Really happy with it so far, better coverage, but everything over wi-fi is noticeably faster (like sending a bunch of large photos from my phone). Having all that processing grunt and the new features even with old clients connecting - it's all noticaably better.

      • thanks for checking on that.

i just thought, there should have been an automated reply to the E-mail address that we used,
        because that confirms ASUS' systems has the correct E-mail address (no spelling mistakes, etc.);
in a way, that reply is the RECEIPT of my submission.

anyway, i have done these redemption offers before and yes, someone does manually check the entry.
it was just my most expensive wireless router purchase, so that's why i thought i should be attentive to this redemption
        ( i had owned ASUS' RT-N66U, RT-AC87U, RT-AC5300 before this AX-11000 )

if i had my way again, i would have preferred the 2 x RT-AX92U instead of the one AX-11000
( actually, i was only after the RT-AX88U because i wanted 8 x Ethernet ports and ability to run Merlin firmware )

        • +1

I was alo expecting some sort of response which is why I asked on Whirlpool.

My choice reasoning was… The AX-11000 gave the second 5GHz AX for the dedicated backhaul where the AX88U didn't have that - and I think a better processor? I'm connecting to a 48 port PoE switch and need the PoE, so 4 or 8 ports made no diff for me… and given the sale price and $200 cashback…. still an expensive setup but really good results.

          • +1

@steve54321: The GT-AX11000 & RT-AX88U have identical cpu & memories (flash & ram). The GT-AX11000 has the 2nd 5Ghz channel which is helpful for the aimesh AX backhaul. The RT-AX88U only has the single 5Ghz channel & 8 GbE LAN ports. The e-giftcard cashback on the RT-AX88U is $50, whereas the GT-AX11000 is $100. Merlin is not available for any GT-xxxx series router, only on the RT-xxxx series. There is a RT-AX95U which is identical to the GT-AX11000, but when it will ever be available i dont know.

      • ASUS may be reading OzB posts too :-P

They just replied via E-mail, with acknowledgement of the entry form for the cash-redemption.

I just submitted it, but the only a 'Thank you for submission" message on the page for a min - no email or anything.

      • that's what i was talking about.
you won't know if you mis-typed your E-mail address or phone number, etc.

        • Just received an email from [email protected] confirming the entry.

I suppose if anyone did apply for the promo and not get this email, there might be a slight chance of incorrect email/details entered.

      • 2 x claims for 2 x different models?
        or 2 x claims, just to be doubly-sure for 1 x model?

that's a good question, because i know some of us, submitted twice, for the 1 x model.
