I have this tablet and it's fantastic.

Biggest downside is that it's unsupported by Netflix, so no HD. With the China rom Netflix won't install at all unless you flash it to a different rom. I didn't have the global rom like this one has, but I think it allows Netflix (non-HD) without flashing. I think this global rom also comes with Google Play whereas I had to manually install it and other Google services for the China ROM.

Two other downsides: no quick charge, but the battery doesn't drain quickly so you aren't forever chasing a charge anyway. And no fingerprint scanner. Boo!

I'm using the tablet right now. It's a tough little guy. Powerful. Perfect size for reading ebooks, full page comics, and posting on Ozbargain. Love it.

"Perfect size for reading ebooks, full page comics, and posting on Ozbargain" - exactly what I want to purchase this for. Do you find battery life is close to what the site claims? 12hrs video or 15hr reading..

      • +2

Those figures are close to true. I haven't paid specific attention to the time, but am constantly impressed with the battery life. I've lazed about all day reading comics and not needed a charge. I use YouTube and Amazon Prime Video without noticing any extra drain. I've never had to stop using it due to low charge or limit my use to stretch it to the end of the day.

Just charge it overnight or during convenient periods.

A few other negatives to mention:

The device is a bit heavy (the battery, probably), so if you like lying on your back and holding your feather-weight phone above you to read, then you'll struggle to do that for more than a few minutes. You'll have to rest it on your chest or a pillow on your chest (unless you're blessed with boobs/man boobs). The weight is no problem for reading in a sitting position though. It isn't that heavy.

Also, the cameras suck (tablet tho, so who cares?) and subsequently the facial recognition sucks. The device has less than 50% odds of recognizing my face in a brightly lit room and zero chance once the lighting dims. I use the 9-point pattern or 4-digit PIN for recognition instead. I forget about the facial recognition usually, and so the few times that it does successfully trigger are unexpected moments of serendipity.

The screen is gorgeous. The guts are able to power through Darkness Rises on max settings, but I haven't given the tablet a proper flogging with games yet.

Sound is… meh. I hope you're using Bluetooth speakers or the headphone jack for better audio if required.

I know that it seems like I'm bagging the Mi Pad 4, but I love it. Nothing else comes close at this price point for an 8in Android tablet.

If I lost my Mi Pad 4 in the harbour right now, I'd buy another one straight away. Then I'd have a cry about the loss. I'd not regret buying another Mi Pad 4 for a moment, even if I'd love Widevine L1/Netflix and a fingerprint scanner on it.

          • @yak: A bit off topic… but where do you read your comics from?

  • I dropped mine previously and the screen is stuffed. Anyone know if these screens can be replaced or repaired in Australia? Or I buy a new one.

    • +1

Ifixit is probably the best place to start looking for information and assistance. They sell repair kits for the first Mi Pad.

This dude ordered and replaced his screen (which didn't fix his issue, but hey) so he'll at least know the part number. https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/573024/Mi+Pad+4+vertical…

There are teardown videos that might help you. Or maybe just searching aliexpress. Is that where repair shops source replacement parts?

  • Thanks OP! I've been waiting for this to go on sale for ages :D

    Get the official case.

It's the faux leather folding book style one that folds back on itself to become a stand. It's decent at protecting your screen in your bag, it works, and you'll definitely want a stand of some description to rest the tablet on a table/desk and type ozbargain posts.

Hunching over a laid flat tablet on a table or holding it with one hand and pecking at it with another is silly. Get a cover/stand. Or forgo the official cover and do it the true ozbargainer way: lean it up against a pile of your used-once-and-never-again electronic gadgets.

  • is this wifi and lte?

    • No just WiFi. The LTE version is more expensive and is also on sale with coupon BGMipad8LTE Product Link

  • Can get these cheaper on eBay.

    • That's weird when I searched earlier Banggood was the cheapest. I'm assuming you're talking about the listing for $307.99?

I wouldn't be allowed to post it anyway as there's only 3 units remaining. Need a minimum of 10 as per OzB deal posting guidelines.

      • I got one last week for 301. I was also fortunate enough to have ten percent off eBay gift card.

  • I have been really tempted by this tablet. It's especially difficult to justify at this price when I can get a 2018 iPad for around $350 (after eBay 20% sale, less tourist GST refund). I want a tablet to reader comics. Maybe the Mi Pad 5.
