PowerDirector is a poor mans Adobe Premiere. Its decent video editing software without being the best available.

PowerDirector typically ranks 2nd to 4th in terms of the best video editors for Windows 10.

Review:
https://www.comparedandreviewed.com/video-editing-software/c…

This is the latest version (V17) and the Ultra edition (as opposed to Standard, 365 or Ultimate)
https://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdirector-video-editi…

At least with PowerDirector V17 you don't need to pay a monthly fee like you do at Adobe….

Normally $129.99 at Cyberlink.com for just PowerDirector V17 Ultra
- where you can nearly always use a discount code to get 10% off that price

Other prices for Cyberlink PowerDirector 17 Ultra:

$139.95 on Steam

$129 at Officeworks (download)

The older V16 Ultra is $137.29 at HumbleBundle

$99.99 USD at B&H Photo (DVD version)

If you want a hacked version they sell on EBAY for less than $10….
God knows why EBAY lets these sellers stay online…

$90.96 AUD aint a bad price for a legit version of Cyberlink PowerDirector 17 Ultra from a legit seller (Microsoft) that you can update….

Friend, for that price I'd prefer to use affinity (entire suite is around the same price) and the free version of davinci for video.

    • Is Affinity available for Windows 10?

It doesnt appear to rate well in most reviews of recommended video editors

      For example:
      https://au.pcmag.com/video-editing/47051/the-best-video-edit…

Adobe Premiere is indisputably better, but more expensive over time.

Friend, affinity is for photo/graphics manipulation. Davinci Resolve is the video editor. I have the paid version but the free version is still very powerful. vs premier, resolve fares better for color editing at least and is used in quite a lot of pro productions. Personally I avoid adobe now days because of their "as a service" model and anti competitive practices.

        • Thanks

Will try the free version of Resolve V15

It got a fair wrap from these guys

          https://www.engadget.com/2018/08/22/davinci-resolve-15-free-…

          • @aussietivoman: I tried to load my existing AVI files into Resolve V15

You can see them in the file listing, but 8 out of 10 of the files wont load

You click on them and hit open or load - but then nothing loads and nothing happens.

Resolve might be good, but doesn't strike me as user friendly

            • @aussietivoman: Friend, try the 16 beta. I havent really worked with .avi files before (mainly use raw). If nothings loading but theyre showing up perhaps try dragging them to the timeline.

              • @Jenny Death: Yeah I've done some research - Resolve doesnt like .avi - they say its an obsolete file format.

The workaround is to convert to .mov or one of the more modern file formats BEFORE importing into Resolve

Resolve is aimed at the pro market and they say pros dont use .avi so they dont support it

Affinity is great. I use Linux now rather than Windows and Affinity Designer/Photo is the only thing I miss.

      • Friend, it sure is a shame, especially since I believe it relies heavily on .NET so its virtually impossible to run on GNU/Linux. Oh well, at least we have better krita and GIMP performance…

  • IV been using power director 15 , which has failed to use GPU acceleration (gtx 860m and 1050ti)

If this fixs that issue I may buy it

Another big hold back is the steam version I can use on multiple of my machines (not at once)

Does the Microsoft version function similar ?
Or it simply gets paired to one pcs hardware I'd?

    • Many wont use the GPU as that is highly geared towards game shading and rendering, not the shear calculation grunt of video editing, for which your CPU is often better geared towards. Google it, I'm sure you find some nice articles on the topic.
      One article says:
"The CPU is the foundation of an editing PC. The processor’s core count and speed determines how quickly you can accomplish editing tasks. If your editing PC doesn’t have a powerful processor, it’s going to be slow, regardless of anything else. Modern editing software such as Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, and Final Cut Pro will take advantage of many CPU cores and hyperthreading, so investing in a good CPU is crucial when building an editing PC. (If you're using DaVinci Resolve, the CPU is still important, but comes secondarily to the graphics card."

    • Oh mine is not a steam version. Mine is a direct purchase. The serial works on my home, office and laptop. Never run it at the same time though but's happy that way. No sales on there today that I see however you do get 10.5% cashrewards.

  • I've used this as my primary editor for the past decade. It's pretty solid, is feature rich, and I upgrade about every 3 years (on an upgrade sale of course). Although aside from supporting new file formats and pc hardware, really not much changes.

If you can't justify the adobe products cost or learning curve, this is great budget alternative that can get you going quickly, cheaply and producing good videos.
