  • These would look cool on the wall above my gaming rig if I could sync them with the rest of my hardware. Maybe an IFTTT command would do the trick?

  • Could price match OW or bunnings

    • +2

$179.10 at Bunnings it would be. If they say they can’t do it, point to the website and tell them it’s a normal sale. Not clearance, etc.

    • Appears Officeworks have no store stock in SA at least, and unavailable online.

  • +1

what happened to the triangle ones

    • +45

This is the new upgraded model, these have four sides.

    • +6

Nanoleaf are the triangular ones. This is a different brand, who are actually Australian.

      • +1

ah cool yeah thats the ones i've see before. the square ones don't look at cool in my opinion

        • +10

Triangle's where last season, now it's hip to be a square.

          • +7

            @hey aj: Pentagons or GTFO.

            • @cnut: It just doesn't have the same ring to it.

But don't worry, we can still hang out.

              • @hey aj: You make a valid point!

              • -1

@hey aj: Really expected Patrick Bateman, not Sesame Street.

        • +2

Just cut them in half mate

  • +7

These guys don't follow Australian consumer Law buyer beware of anything happens outside their stated warranty. I personally wouldn't ever buy their products again after a poor warranty experience when a light failed.

    • +21

I’ve had the complete opposite. They replaced two bulbs no questions asked. Even replaced them with newer models.

It’s one of the best companies I’ve dealt with, and they are (at least were originally) Australian.

      • +1

Outside or inside the stated 2 year warranty period?

US company founded by an Australian btw.

        • +2

One was inside warranty as it was DOA. Other I don’t remember, but it was a while after I got it.

          • +4

@cnut: I think you will find that the other was also in the 2 year warranty period as I know from experience they will close off your support ticket and give you a discount code to purchase a new light outside of that. Their lights are expensive and poorly built…shouldn't be failing just outside of 2 years when they advertise a 20+ year LED life.

            • +2

@noise36: Yeah, I agree they should last much longer.

But as others have said, we have had good experiences. And the replacement bulbs have been going strong since.

I’ve used these since the Kickstarter campaign and have about 20 including the strips.

              • -4

@cnut: A good experience inside of the warranty period which has nothing to do with my experience outside of the warranty period.

                • -6

@noise36: Can't disagree more, I was a kickstarter backer and had a bulb replaced after the two year warranty period. Also what other smart lighting vendors do you know that DO offer replacements after the warranty period?

ACCC law for reasonable use normally applies to larger appliances (washing machines etc) not smart light bulbs..

                  • +6

@garethds: Might want to educate yourself on consumer guarantees http://consumerlaw.gov.au/consumers-and-acl

The ACL applies to smart light bulbs and washing machines

                    • @noise36: I've got a bulb i use daily since the kickstarter - working fine. I think your in the minority having issues.

                    • +3

@noise36: Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. Consumer law covers smart light bulbs, definitely doesn’t just cover larger appliances

                      • +7

@Milkywayss: People take it personally when you state a company they like the products of is a shitty company flouting Australian consumer laws.

                        • +4

@noise36: @Noise36 totally agree, I had the same experience with LIFX. Very poor given the cost. Poor follow up. As an asset manager I look after thousands of LEDs, failure rates are rare.
My LIFX at home failed with a burnt out electrical smell. It spent the 6 months before it failed resetting. Probably worked for less than 400 hrs b4 fail.

I saw these tiles for sale and didn't think to Lodge a bargain.. I would neg, but technically these tiles are discounted. Would call the Closing Down Sale at the local rug shop more of a bargain than this deal.

                          • @[Deactivated]: @noise36: It depends on the kind of remedy that you wanted to the issue. If you wanted a refund, they're within their rights to only offer you repair or replacement. If they wouldn't even do that, it's definitely something you could take to the ACCC.

                            • +1

@trankillity: Yeh,I'll cut my losses and run. 😀

                            • +1

@trankillity: They offered me a 25% code to buy a new light and then closed my support case when I mentioned their obligation to offer a remedy under Australian consumer law.

                              • @noise36: Your next line of recourse is to provide proof of all this and take it to ACCC then. No point badmouthing on here when there's still an avenue for complaint.

                    • @noise36: Happy to get educated. Which particular part of the ACL are you saying lifx is in breech of? How long after the initial two year warranty period ended did the bulb fail?

        • -3

You will find it very difficult to negotiate repairs or replacement with any company outside the warranty period.

Even though you may be right in terms of reasonable life, it can only be decided in court.

          • +1

@thydzik: —Insert obligatory John Roberts quote here—

"You can't fight for your rights if you don't know what they are"

Put simply, the expiration of the manufacturer's warranty does not extinguish a consumer's rights under ACL. Exercising your rights to appropriate remedy is only as difficult as the supplier makes it. And I think that's the point @noise36 is trying to make based on his/her personal experience dealing with Lifx who sells a product touting "Each bulb will last 22.8 years, assuming they're used for three hours per day…"

            • @[Deactivated]: So how will you force the supplier or manufacture to repair or replace your item then?

ACCC will forward you to some low cost legal services.

ACL only says what you are entitled to, it doesn't help you to gain that entitlement.

          • +2

@thydzik: 100% wrong. No courts are involved. ACL was created so that courts didn't need to be part of the process.

            • @trankillity: out of curiosity whats the escalation process

do you fill out a form or something on ACCC website?

            • @trankillity: As above, how do you force the manufacturer to repair or replace your item then?

              • @thydzik: The onus is on the customer to prove their case. If the vendor still doesn't offer a remedy, and you still believe you are entitled to a remedy, you can raise a complaint.

                This also answers @furythree's question.

                • @trankillity: exactly, in order to prove your case, you need to go to court.

any of the government agencies will provide general advice and help you find legal advice, but they will not go to court for you.

                  • @thydzik: Still 100% incorrect. ACL intervenes on your behalf, then fines the company if they're found to be in breach. Zero courts involved.

                    • @trankillity: nope.

They don't know who is right or wrong without going to court themselves.

do you really think they will waste tax payers money to resolve your $199 item dispute?

they will forward you to some inexpensive legal advice.

The only time they will chase the company is if they get a significant amount of complaints or see that it is a systemic issue in the industry.

      • Same here.

    • +1

      Had very good experience..

    • +3

I've had exactly the opposite experience, I bought a whole bunch of the first gen bulbs from a dodgy ebay seller and had two replaced under warranty without any difficulty at all. They just asked which ones had stopped working and posted replacements.

      • -6

Outside or inside the stated 2 year warranty period?

    • +3

I've had the same experience. Never buying Lifx again.
The bulb started flashing red indicating a power failure. They were quite quick to offer a discount code though.

    • I complained to them about wifi issues (with a new router) I was having with two of the first gen bulbs and they ended up sending me one of the newer ones last year at no charge.

There was a fair bit of backwards and forwards via email with them but ultimately I can't complain about their service which for them resulted in me buying more after confirming the new bulb worked great with the new router.

  • +2

Very good deal! the problem is with Lifx, they really need to fix that WIFI interface issue.

    • What issue?

    • -7

IMO their lights are poor quality and expensive. Multiple people confirming product failures in the comments section here, with some also defending the company in the same comment. :)

If you must buy their products buy them locally so you are protected via Australian consumer law as from my experience the LIFX online store will not help outside of the stated warranty.

      • +8

I think you have a serious personal gripe based off your own experience, which is fine but you need to chill out. Can you stop blasting several comments about your experience? Once is enough - people notice your negative vote and read your comment and form their own opinion, no need to reiterate. You're living up to your name with all this 'noise' you're creating.

        • -5

They saved a few dollars from flouting Australian consumer law and ripping me off, it will cost them a lot more in lost sales from all the people reading about their behavior choosing not to buy their products.

          • +2

@noise36: Well then follow it up with the fair trade organisation for your state and stop complaining. They can decide whether or not your lights have lasted a "reasonable" amount of time for what you paid.

  • +8

Still amazed at the price. $199 seems far too high even if it were an everyday price

  • +1

I've got the Nanoleaf Auroras, you can get square ones which are the Canvas model, JB hifi have them on sale every few months or so for $200 for 9 panels which is better value in my opinion. You can then add on the 3 pack expansion kit for $69 from Amazon when it goes on sale.

    • +1

Love the Nanoleaf Panels, they are the first one comes out with this idea.

  • +8

Successfully price-matched at Bunnings for $179.10.

  • Can anyone give me a reason why I’d need these in addition to Philips Hue strips, Go and bulbs?

    Don’t neg me, it’s a genuine question.

Do they work in harmony with Hue?

    • +8

These are wifi, hue is ZigBee. You need em cuz they look fancy and you wallet is overflowing with cash.

      • I’m going to do it because I can leothrowingmoney.bmp

Anyone know of a SE Melbourne Bunning’s playing ball?

    • I mean, you don't really need them at all.

    • +2

Yes and no. They have separate apps, but if you use Siri, Alexa or Google Home, it will control both the Hue and LIFX lights.

That being said, I find there's about a 1-1.5 second delay for the LIFX Beam I have in the same room as a few Philips Hue devices. The Philips Hue ones come on first and switch off first.

The thing I don't like about these tiles is that the cable is clearly visible, and if you leave a gap between the tiles, you'll see cables connecting them. If they're anything like the Beam (which I love), they'll be super bright and have multiple light zones so they can do chasing and other visual effects that Hue devices can't.

      • This is really helpful. Thank you.

Im using Google Assistant and Hue throughout the home but think these would make a nice wall feature in the bedroom. Just watched a few YouTube reviews and the effects look really good.

I might give them a whirl.

  • I'm renting. How do these attach to the walls? Is it two sided tape that does not leave a mark on the wall?

    • +2

You can get two sided Velcro strip things that are removable. $10 for a pack at Bunnings. Not 3M, some other brand I found works just as well.

    • 3M has never failed me in rentals.

    • They have 3M Command tape at the back. Just stick. Pull them off when you move out - no marks.

  • +2

Is it just me, or does anyone find these a little bit tacky?

    • +2

nope totally agree they look terrible but each to his own

  • Bunnings price matched after a few phonecalls! https://i.imgur.com/GXeR5Jg.jpg

  • Does anyone know if the 10% off with referral code applies to this as well?

  • Cant decide between these and nanoleaf. can get nanoleaf canvas 9pack for about the same price.,

    • If you are already trapped in the LIFX ecosystem, get these. Easier to manage from one app.

      • I am in no smart ecosystem yet.

        • Then it doesn't matter. Get what's cheapest.

LIFX have a premium because they work without a hub and also because they integrate their ecosystem. So you have one cool app to control every light.

          • @cnut: And more led zones, but nanoleaf have more coverage area

            • @KenDiaMoi: Not sure the area will matter all that much. 5 tiles will light up a lot in a room as is.

              • @cnut: Not sure what to do still. Probably do what I always do when this happens and not get either now, and then buy one for full price later and wish I got the other.

  • It was so hard for Bunnings to do price beat by 10% as advertised - I got only price match at Springvale Bunnings Store ( VIC ) .
    Limited stock.
