  • I use http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ as a good reminder of which Macs have been recently refreshed. Given that it's likely a new Macbook Air is just weeks away, you may be better off waiting for that one. As for Macbooks/Macbook Pro - They're both overdue for a refresh, and OS X Lion is just a month (or two, or three) away from release, we may be seeing a whole round of refreshes coming up soon.

The MacBook Pro was just updated in Feb/Mar…

      • Right, so we are closer to another update than we are launch date.
Not to mention that based on normal cycle schedule, this next update for the Pro will be more than just a spec update. They are due for a complete overhaul.

As Apple market their sex appeal so much, having the latest and greatest is even more important for Apple fans than other brands.

    • I bought a new MacBook in January 2011 when OzBargain was howling with protests that a new model was 'just around the corner'. It's now more than 6 months since that date, and no new model has been released to replace it.

How come when a new Sony/HP/Dell/insert brand name here product is discounted the forums are not full of 'wait! new model in X weeks/months!' posts? What makes Apple so special that people spend endless hours speculating the timing of the moment when Steve Jobs walks out on stage and delivers a new product?

Because those brands release updates and spec bumps to their computers at a much higher frequency than Apple. The real risk of buying an Apple computer that is overdue for an update is that you'll soon be left with a superseded computer that is based on comparatively outdated technology that is months if not years behind the curve, due to Apple's relatively infrequent updates.

        howling with protests

What's wrong with letting buyers know the full facts? We're just trying to help.

If you're happy with the specs of a computer, and you urgently need it right at that very moment no one will fault you for buying. But if a purchase isn't urgent, I think it's only smart to wait until the next refresh so you don't get caught out, particularly when there is strong evidence to suggest a refresh is imminent. Macrumors is a good place to determine how strong that evidence is; right now evidence is strong that the MacBook Air will be getting a pretty significant update in the next weeks or couple of months (Thunderbolt, Core 2 Duo -> Sandy Bridge Core i5/i7).

While I can't comment on Sony/HP/Dell/, I can tell you that IBM/Lenovo run a quarterly cycle of updates.
Apple run on a at best 2 updates per year per product.
They also make a lot more fan fair about all of there updates because that is what Apple is best at - marketing.

only the macbook air will be updated soon! And iMac as well… major change will be the CPU…. You won't see any major change with the outside look…

      iMac?

iMac's got updated less than 2 months ago, I highly doubt you'd see another iMac update this year, let alone soon.

    • Imacs were just updated in May… perfect time to buy one!
MacBooks are definitely long overdue for a refresh, but that could still be months away, and for a lot of people with basic usage in mind, the current model will perform just fine.

Macbook and Macbook Air: Update should be within the next month or so.
Macbook Pros: updated a few months ago and will most likely be updated again in October/November
iMacs: Just updated, but may see a redesign late in the year if the Macbook Pros also see a major overhaul.

For all their secrecy, Apple follow pretty much the same release schedule every year; it's not too difficult to predict. :)

    Macbook Air 13"

Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86ghz CPU
    256GB
    2GB RAM

… all for the 'hot price' of $1943. Boy, Apple are really being generous with the 10% off offer. Thin or not, this thing was obsolete 18 months ago. $600 for the product / $1350 for the logo.

    • The jbhifi.com.au prices don't seem to have been updated to reflect the 10% off, once you click through (click "buy online" next to the price) to the jbhifionline.com.au site the prices are cheaper… though that particular model doesn't appear to be there.
