From Ben & Jerry's Facebook event link:

We're proud as peanuts (in a chocolate swirl) to introduce Australia’s biggest pint tub giveaway, which sees more than 60,000 pints of ice cream up for grabs.

Ice cream fans are invited to cone-on-down to Sydney Central Station on Friday 1st July and scoop up as many pint tubs as they can carry in exchange for a gold coin donation with all money raised going to OzHarvest.

(extracts)

OzHarvest is a non-denominational charity that rescues excess food which would otherwise be discarded. This excess food is distributed to charities supporting the vulnerable in Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Adelaide.

Currently in Sydney OzHarvest delivers 150,000 meals per month with a fleet of 7 vans.

Australia wide OzHarvest delivers 180,000 meals per month with a fleet of 11 vans.

OzHarvest believes that good food should not go to waste. In fact, by distributing it to those in need, we turn excess food into a resource and save thousands of kilograms of food from being dumped as landfill each year.

Food is generously donated by those with excess. By distributing this food to various charities, we assist them to better and more efficiently address the underlying social problems in our society. With this support charities are able to redirect funding to programs assisting those who are disadvantaged or at risk.

This deal promotes obesity and is a blatant ploy at raising the awareness of the company more so than helping anyone out.

    • -1

just like "Carols by candlelight" a blatant ploy by Australian candle manufacturers to capitalise on the major mainstream quasi-religious annual event.

      and encourage pyromania!!!

  • Sooo….how many plastic spoons did people sell on the day?

    • Oh yeah, don't forget the spoons !!

  • +1

This promotion sounds like it hasn't been thought out properly.
    1. They're running out of ice cream, probably well before the end of the time.
    2. $1 for a dozen pints is crazy, like 1% of normal price!?
    3. Lines are huge, and chaotic.

Solution: Run same promo, but charge a ten'a ($) instead of a gold coin. Make more money for charity, and solve some problems. Or charge one gold coin per tub.

  • +3

They now changed it so it's $1 per pint tub and you can only have 8 maximum per person.

    • wow that's a shame, good for charities though

Harvest! For just a gold coin donation per pint you can scoop up to 8 pints with all the money and any leftovers being donated to Oz Harvest.

      Definitely changed

    Seem like 1L containers

    • i thought it was 500mls

      • i'm not really sure

        most likely 500mL then

(i was just assuming through the photos)

  • 1 hour until brisbane icecream massacre

  • Do I need any printout(s) to claim the icecream? or just hop in the queue?

    • i'm guessing you just rock up and get the tubs and pay for the amount you have

      REMEMBER

They now changed it so it's $1 per pint tub and you can only have 8 maximum per person.

      • Thanks issh

Another stupid question (sorry I didn't get a chance to read the previous comments - very busy at workplace…)

Do I have to bring the tubs? (silly me, I'm sure I don't :P but just wanna double check)

  • The line is HUGE now, got my 4 tubs - they are 453ml each

  • +1

    line is humungous.

    my patience is not.

off to woolworths for $1.49 timtams

  • not sure if it's worth going now since ppl say the ice cream only have a month till expiry and no choice in flavour!

maybe pop in after work and see how things are going.

  • I went at 4pm in Brisbane today and waited in line for <10 mins. Scored 4 tubs for $4. They are 458ml each and really easy to stack for those looking to get alot more. They also had plenty left by the looks of it!

  • lawyer friend took her paralegal and admin staff and stocked office fridge with 40 tubs.

    • were you walking along Roma st towards roma st station from the square with a woman at about 12:30?

      • nope, wasn't me

        got the pics off FB

  • Was going to go after work, at 4pm. But thought that it was not worth going in to the city, paying $20 for parking, lining up for 30mins to an hour, not sure if there's going to be anything left, and then driving home in peak hour. Also, not worth parking the car and catching a bus in either.
    The city sucks.

    • +1

      The city sucks.

      that's a bit harsh.

in terms of a "a bit" being a little harsh.

you should be a whole lot harsh.

supermarkets closing at 5pm on saturdays, 6 pm sundays, 9pm weeddays. is this Guatemala?

      apologies to Guatemala

      • What the hell are you talking about? :?

What's the supermarket opening hours mean? The suburban supermarkets open these hours, do the city supermarkets open later…?

  • how come its expired there's still mel?

  • Hope all the ozbees in melb got their stash. I went first around 4pm, but the line was about 200 people. I later checked at 5.30, but there was no change it still went out the door, despite winding around in several loops.

Even so, took only 20 minutes. There was only the choc banana left at that stage, but I would have been alot sadder if it was only vanilla.

  • Yes massive lines! But us melbs were quick 25mins & all done, mostly vanillas thou, which was sad

  • Great Ozbargain, but no credit to Ben & Jerry's.
Melb queues were massive. Would have expected that they might have improved the process after two previous States.
For them, obviously a good way to get publicity while getting rid of unsellable stock (given the upcoming 'use by date') of unpopular flavours.
