DELIVERME

Got this email, good if you've got a sodastream and looking for more flavours than KMart bothers to stock. Esp. good with the 'buy 5, get 1 free' (note you have to click their special link for it) and the cheapies on their page - could get 6 bottles for about $30, which makes a stack of drinks.

Hi Sean, just curious about these systems. How much drink do you have to make before you break even? I'm also dismayed by the number of PET bottles I'm discarding and their weight in my shopping basket.

I own a Sodastream and found its just not worth it.

The drinks don't taste as good as Home Brand etc and Home Brand is only a little more per litre then this.

I know some people like it, but I just don't think its worth it.

      Also probably the most important.

The regular flavours include Sugar and the same Sweeteners used on Diet Coke etc

I would rather die from Obesity OR Cancer, not both :)

It really makes no sense why they can't just make a nice drink without artificial sweeteners, but i guess this goes the same road that Cottees cordial are doing.

(I buy diet drinks myself and don't want sugar in them, that's stupid)

I think this is to help counter the horrid aftertaste of artificially sweetened drinks. You wind up with something that is less likely to make you fat and less likely to taste like artificial arse. :)

        Maybe. ;)

        • Agreed - I actually love my S.S. mind you I tend to use it simply for carbonated water (no flavours) - because for some unknown reason mineral water is being sold at way above 'coke/schweppes/etc' prices.

      • Thanks for the review. I've got a better picture now.

    • It mainly depends which brands of soft drink you buy.

If you buy Coke at full price, you can break even or save money.
If you buy generic (e.g. Aldi) Cola, you'll never break even.

The one case where you definitely save money is if you drink alot of soda water. Sodastream makes that much cheaper than even generic soda water.

        No.

Sodastream tastes worse, or similar to Home Brand, Aldi brand, Coles Smartbuy Cola.

To compare it to Coke is just silly, coke is a superior product to generic cola.

You could say that Dr Pepper, LA Ice Cola, Generic Brand and Pepsi taste more similar to Coke then Sodastream does.

Sodastream is not bad, its just that most people buy it on the assumption that the drinks actually taste like supermarket products, they don't.

I never said anything about taste - thus am confused by your 'No'. There is nothing factually incorrect in my comment.

    • I've only had it for a few months & actually only drank the ones that came free - a cola, lemonade & ginger beer (then bought a diet cola on special). Get about 8-12 x 750ml bottles per bottle of mixture, also u have to replace the bottles every year or so, plus assumedly the co2 sometime. So cost-wise it's only just a bit better than homebrand.
Tastewise it's a mixed bag. Ginger beer v nice, diet cola ok. Lemonade average, cola about the same.
One -ve is u really have to let the bottles sit for a while before drinking them, as it takes time for the water & mixer to mix. So u need a few bottles if you're going to drink much.

I got the machine for free, so it's still worth it for me $wise, and certainly it seems better for the environment than PET bottles.
It's generally more of a gimmick though I think - posted the bargain for those who do buy it.

Turn the bottle upside down a few times - that gets you the same effect in about 5 seconds.

  • Sugar Free Cranberry Raspberry
    or Sugar Free Orange
Are both $3.50 ea might be worth a try

Just bought 4 SF Orange, 1 SF Cranberry Raspberry and a Mango Ice Tea for $17.50 :)
Through the buy 5 get the 6th free, make sure you put the most expensive syrup last as that's the one that is free.

  • The new Cola Vanilla option is very tempting (I love Coke Vanilla, so if its even close to that flavour it will be a money saver)… But I'd love to know the caffeine levels of all the options (e.g. how much more caffeine does Cola Energy have over standard Cola)? http://www.sodastreamusa.com/TasteNutritionInfo.aspx has some of the them but not the new ones…

  • I own one and must admit its a bit of a novelty.
I do remember a mate owning one years ago and Sodastream used to make a flavour called "mystery potion". I recall it being awesome.

  • We had a soda stream back in the 80's, loved it! I never realised they had made a come back.
