  • Not much point getting a 4TB of this, shucking this is cheaper (unless you're concerned about warranty)

All drives fail at some point. I just had a 3TB WD Red fail in the last week after 3 years of use. There was a bad batch of of Reds that people were reporting about earlier in the year. At my workplace. we had to process a lot of warranties for the Barracuda 2TB model ST2000DM006 but the newer ST2000DM008 have less platters and have proven much more reliable.

In previous years, I had Maxtors drives fail within months when they were bullet-proof in the years before.

For a NAS, you should be buying from different manufacturers or at least different manufacture batches. That way, they should fail at different times so you can restore the NAS before the next drive fails.

Drives fail, no matter what you buy. If you can't afford to lose it, keep multiple backups.

Oh look, another uninformed opinion. Surprised to see one of those in a Seagate post /s

        • -4

          Yeah, nah, but it's true.

@goober: Oh look, yet another uninformed opinion. Wonder if we can go three in a row.

Anyone else care to chime in with their baseless claims?

Might be worth it at this pricepoint. Ironwolves are better suited for a dedicated NAS vs regular desktop drives.

      • Can you give me a short note on why these are better for NAS. I’ve read in here they are but have no idea why

        • +2

They are dedidcated NAS drives, with lower wattage, more rated power-on hours, and vibration sensor so better for running 24/7 in a cage alongside many other drives.

Think of them like WD reds and WD greens/blues.

          • @navjay: I run my drives 24/7 regardless so "NAS drives" are good choice either way for me.

And, in contrast to BarraCuda, IronWolf comes with IronWolf Healt Management that can provide additional infomation to hosting NAS.

Iron wolf is a higher tier than the one that you shuck. Also has more warranty.

      • I think they both have 3yr?

        • +6

The shucked drive has zero years warranty, because you've shucked it.

          • @Tacooo: If you take enough care you can replace shucked drives in the original undamaged housing to claim the 2 year external drive warranty.

            • +1

@navjay: You can try for sure. Not a guarantee though.

    • does it come with any sata power and data cable?

  • +6

It's funny how Seagate name their hard drives - names like Barracuda and Ironwolf have zero relation to their use. Give them names like Spinmaster, Datahoarder, Pr0nbank, P1rate, Steamslave, etc.

    • You're also not a fan of razer then I guess…

    • +1

I mean, I fail to see how red, blue, black, purple have any relation to their use either.

  • Word of warning for those buying the 10TB for use in a Synology NAS…

This is for the older ST10000VN0004 version - the latest ST10000VN0008 version are unaffected.

  • 14tb is tempting

  • Can you use these as a normal Desktop drive or is it not worth it?

    • +1

      Yeah you can.
