Shame it's soooo expensive when you get there these days

  • +3

Weak dollarydoo offsets this deal.. might be a cheap way to get further south though..

  • +2

Great price. I booked a few return MEL-LAX VA flights for myself a couple weeks ago and paid a little over $1k each.

  • +1

Why is Sydney always just a tiny bit more expensive?

    • +2

Because of the flights curfew, there are higher airport fees at Sydney compared to Melbourne. Less fuel burn, but much more expensive per passenger fees.
The one that gets me is Brisbane. They're closer, and cheaper than Melbourne……

      • Do you mean closer and more expensive than Melbourne?

    • MEL has a quasi single terminal setup like Gold Coast. Syd Bris and Cns have idiotic 2 terminal mess.

  • What's the cost and realistic chances to upgrade from cattle class to business return via Sydney using QFF points?

    • +2

Zero. You will be unable to upgrade these sale fares using QFF points.

      • Dang. Thanks for letting me know though.

      • -1

Unless you have some hella-elite status along with your points. Then maybe..

  • Quantas worth the extra $60?

    • They're both quality airlines. The best thing to do IMO, is choose an airline and stick to it. I went with Virgin as they're usually a little cheaper, and have been saving points and status credits. It's taken about 15 years, but I've got their 'Silver Status' now which means lounge access! Woot!
In terms of airline quality, Qantas has the 787-9, which are a beautiful aircraft. Virgin is using 777-300ER, which are a little older, but still very comfortable. Recently refurbished them all, too iirc.

      • Just so you're aware, VA Silver only gives you 2 lounge passes yearly, which unfortunately can only be used in the VA Domestic lounges.

        • I have Gold! Apologies for the incorrect info above.

I was in LA a few weeks back and had no issues getting in there.

      • +1

I generally dislike flying the 787 long haul. Way too cramped shoulder to shoulder. Much prefer the 777, or A380 going the other way via the Middle East.

        • I'm 181cm, 135kg, and hated the 777. 787 was better for me, but anything Airbus is the most comfortable for PAX.
Even their humble A320 was more comfortable than the 777.

        • Agreed. Only a few airlines (SIA) have a decent 787 econ config. The only ppl that like flyign 787 are in bz h

15 year to get a Silver status??

        • Took me less than 2 to get Gold.

          • @wavesgreen: Tell us your tricks, other then to fly at least twice a week for 2 years. :P

            • @Jay-rad: There's no trick, it's just a simple trick. Yeah I flew a lot, with a lot of long haul.

        • Correction: Now on Gold, not silver.
13 years of flying occasionally, 2 years of flying regularly.
I work now for Airservices AUS, so get a lot of discounted travel ;)

      • I thought status credits expired every 12 months and needed to be re-earned to re-gain lounge access?

        • +1

They do, not sure what the people above are talking about with 2 or 15 years. I've been retaining VA Platinum for years and don't believe there are any ways to extend credits longer than 12 months.

  • +2

+1 for including Perth in your post (for a genuine bargain).

  • San Francisco also came up with plenty to see (sadly plenty of homeless too). LAX is pretty lost in crowds but less cold end of year.
