    It is Sodaking not Sodastream

    • Just external labelling. Otherwise identical product.

      • Do they accept sodastream gas bottle for refill?

        • yes, did mine a couple of days ago with the starter cylinder

        • Yep, everywhere (including petrol stations) you'll find both brands mixed together. I've swapped SodaKing for Sodastream at Caltex.

      • Assuming sodastream never change their security valve thing again…

    • +1

      Nor sofaking

  • +1

do these sodaking bottles fit into a sodastream machine…?

    • yes, i'm using one in my sodastream play

  • whats everyone using for their syrup? I probably have a dozen different syrup and have not found one that taste decent for me. Very disappointed with this overall. I think its mainly the sweetener they use in the syrup? Not so sure.

    • +3

squeeze some lemon or lime juice

      • ha, might just try this with a cup of sugar :)

    • +1

Bickfords cordial from the supermarket. Heck, even Ribena or Cottees. Syrups are for chumps.

I totally agree with the "official" syrups. Chock full of preservatives which always gives me a headache. For the price they charge you can even afford the expensive la-dee-dah real fruit juice cordials (with no preservatives).

  • I swapped a sodastream bottle for a sodaking last week. The question is, can you swap an empty sodaking bottle back to a sodastream refill?

    • I believe it’s one way only.
No more stream once you visit the king

    • Yes I've done it at both Big W and Caltex. They don't care.

    • -2

No. Why would one company take another company's rubbish/product? Some sales people might not do the right thing and you might get away with it.

Here's the Kegland adapter and CO2 bottles to refill your own SodaStream canisters. Much easier and cheaper in the long run. Use it myself and can vouch for it like OP does.

If you aren't refilling your own canisters from a massive gas bottle are you even a true OzBargainer?

    • Had mine for over a year. These are a no brainier at this price.

Kegland has put huge downward pressure on prices of cylinders in recent years. Before they came along, a 6kg was running $250 to $300.

      • 6kg was running $250 to $300.

Which even with the cost of regular Sodastream bottles would have left you coming out on top in the long run.

        • Indeed. Easily pay for itself in no time even back then. At sub $100, it shouldn't even require contemplation.

          • @ash2000: Just bought a soda stream during the ebay sales, which I haven't opened up yet or calculated the maths on the refills yet.

How many times can you refill a cylinder with a 6L tank? Also, 1 cylinder produces 60Ls of carbonated water?

            • +2

@billbro: About 15 refills. If paying full refill price that's $300!

1 sodastram 400g cylinder makes about 40L. They say 60L, but no one gets 60L.

I actually don't refil my small takes but rather just connect a hose from the large tank to the SodaStream.

            • +1

@billbro: I got the same deal. I've been through a few refills though. The initial 'starter bottle' which is labelled as 40L, but on the box says it contains 15L of gas gave me 23L of good carbonated water. I then got myself a new 60L cylinder and used it the same way and got myself 26L of good carbonated water. (I have been doing 3 x '2 mississippi' pumps).

I'm happy enough with that. I do think they understate the capacity of the 'starter bottle' to give people an impression that a 60L bottle will last them close to the quoted 60L of carbonated water.

With my next refill I'll be lowering my expectations a little in the fizz department to see how far I can get out of it. I think a full cylinder needs less 'mississippi's' than a half empty one. It's probably best to gauge the fizz my looking at the bubbles after each pump, rather than doing it systematically as I have been.

Wouldn't it be better to get the hose that allows you to plug the keg straight into the machine? (Legit question - considering getting one)

      • It would if you don't mind a 1m tall gas cylinder sitting around in your kitchen or under a cabinet. I don't have room though and even if I did it would ruin any aesthetic I had going on.

      • -1

and having masses of compressed co2 in your house does have a slight safety risk if you would like to continue breathing.
safe enough if you know what your doing and use good products, but also possibly fatal.
filling outside or in well ventilated shed is intrinsicly safer.

        • True, but 6kg of CO2 isn't going to go very far. It'll sink to the floor immediately and only displace the air down there. So unless you plan on lying on the floor constantly you're probably safe. Might be a problem for pets though if you get a leak.

          • -1

@Tacooo: yeah i think its like about a cubic metre of gas, not a lot but still potentially lethal if you dont realise. again im not saying dont do it just want people (and pets) to stay safe.

      • +1

I got the 2KG tank with the hose - the 2KG is the same height as the Sodastream so if you tuck it away in a corner it isn't that unsightly. I've got mine tucked in a corner between the microwave and the wall and you barely know it's there.

The 6kg no - unless you leave it in the garage or something.

    • Damn, even with that $30 shipping the math works out pretty advantageously.
      You may have convinced me..

      • +1

If you're talking about shipping for the cylinder don't worry about getting it from them. Find a local brewing place and go purchase one from them. Might be slightly more in cost but you don't have to worry about shipping and you can take it back there to have it swapped/refilled.

      • +2

So setup cost for each would be (and please correct me if I have made a mistake):

        Kegland
        Adapter: $15
        Bottle: $83
        Shipping: $30 (ish)
        Refill: $25 (ish)
        = $153 / 1000L = 15.3 cents per litre

        Sodastream: $35 / 60L = 58.3 cents per litre

        ———————————————————————-

        Subsequent use:

        Kegland Refill: $25 / 1000L = 2.5 cents per litre

        Sodastream Refill: $19 / 60L = 31.6 cents per litre

        • Well when you put it like that it seems like a no-brainer :O

        • +1

Well you don't pay for the refill to begin with. The tanks come pre-filled. So it's even cheaper.

        • refills may be quite a bit more expensive depending on where you live.
had a look at their reseller map and the only ones even close to where i live in perth are brewmasters.
nowhere on the brewmasters site could i see a refilling price only cylinder swap 6kg for $50.
might pay to do some investiagation before diving in.

          • @rakeem: Called a few places. Cylinder swap is the more popular option and is perfectly fine anyway. If you must refill though I found they were slightly more expensive to fill than swap.

            • @Tacooo: yeah i am not saying dont do it, just pointing out that Master Bates calculations are possibly not gonna be accurate for everyone, and that checking around is a good idea. like for me there is a place that does fire extinguisher refills and testing but refills 6kg foodgrade much cheaper than the home brewing places.

          • +1

@rakeem: $50 / 1000 = 5 cents per litre. Even paying $100 per refill makes sense at 10 cents per litre, it is still 1/3 what you pay to Sodastream.

I just got this last week! 6kg big cylinder and adapter. Did my 1st refill yesterday.
WHat i've learned is that you need to screw on the bottle REALLLLYYY tight, all the way to the end of the thread, otherwise the gas just leaks out and filling doesnt work. If you screw it down all the way, then it's all good. Need gloves though, coz cylinder is cold from freezing and need extra good grip for tightening.

    • if you were paying attention, you may have noticed it's not actually sodastream company product.

      • To be fair, the title is misleading.

      • -1

If you were paying attention you may have noticed that the The Phantom diary is chock-a-block with hero events and doesn't have the time to read everything.

Anyway who needs facts when my assumptions are usually pretty reliable. Not this time perhaps, but usually.

  • +2

That's not hardcore! Using a CO2 fire-extinguisher that you got from the tip (that happens to be the same thread) together with the soda-stream freedom adapter to put bubbles in your drink is hardcore OzBargain!

    • +7

If you're not using baking soda and vinegar you found in the Woolies bin to produce your own CO2, then hand pumping it into an old fire extinguisher to fill it up are you really even bargain hunting?

      • touché.

      • <bows> respect sir, respect
