    Laggy and poor camera

  • Otherwise ok for a basic phone?

    • +1

The reviews suggest it is ok for the most basic tasks. But if you have expectation beyond this you will get upset with it.

Can't speak for the 2.2 directly, but I have its predecessor the Nokia 2.1 (fairly consistently available for around $100 for a lot of its life). It's my favourite phone purchase I've ever made. The biggest feature is its battery life, even with untold hours of podcasts and web browsing I find myself getting 2-3 days on a single charge. Unfortunately the Nokia 2.2 appears to have reduced the battery size from 4000 mAh to 3000 mAh and also increased performance which could come at a power cost. However, they've also changed to more energy efficient chips, so until GSMArena does some trustable tests on it, who knows if there's any significant impact. Second biggest feature is you don't need a protective case. If you drop it, it's not the end of the world.

As for usability, you've probably already extrapolated that the 2.2 with better performance than the 2.1 is more than adequate as a "basic" phone. As a very happy 2.1 owner the 2.2 is first in line to also upgrade my work mobile. Sorry for telling you my life story and no definitive information on the 2.2, haha I'm bored on my break, you're welcome.

this kind of hardware is better off with Android Go imho

    • Android One was developed for "low end" devices, this device is running Android One.

      • +3

could you please show me where you got this info from. as far as I know, Android Go is for low end devices. Android One means that this is close to stock Android without anything added by the manufacturer, receiving updates from Google directly.

if you care to have a look at the list of Android One phones, very few of them have low end specs.

        • From Android Authority https://www.androidauthority.com/stock-android-vs-android-on…

"Then there’s Android One, which was originally launched in India in 2014 and was aimed at low-end phones. Over the years, Android One has actually grown beyond its original purpose to include much higher-end phones than was originally intended."

          • +1

@LauralHardy: yeah, the quote from that article is "Finally, there’s Android Go. This flavor of Android replaces the original Android One programme and is specifically for low-end devices" so Android One is no longer for low end devices. once again, imho a 2GB RAM quad core device would be much better off with Android Go. case in point.

    • +1

Android Go is meant for 1GB phones. this has 2GB, so copes with proper Android 9.

      • He's not going to listen to you.

        • @LauraHrdy
          Actually he is correct.
Android one is on the Nokia 8.1 and Nokia 8 and the flagship Nokia 9
Also as Kasaresj has said Android GO is for the low end phones.

      • my comment was more about the CPU. four A53 cores is rock bottom in my books.

this Android Go initiative is a questionable move anyway. My guess is as good as anyone else's on this, but I fail to see a big price difference between low end crap and decent budget phones that can be found around $200. this initiative and marketing and so much effort to deliver and promote it.. I guess it just means that somewhere there are warehouses full of low end crap hardware such as 1gb memory chips and crappy CPUs, yeah let's write a simple Android for them and sell them.

        • Go is all about the fact that Android, or at least Google Services, has become bloated and will not work in 1GB.

          CPU is not the problem.
And there are lots of "Go" phones in the sub-$100 range, $50 with carrier subsidies.

The 6.1 for $46 more kind of murders it on value.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/484752

    $149 vs $195
    16GB vs 64GB
    2GB RAM vs 4GB RAM
    13MP vs 16MP
    5MP vs 8MP
    Single flash vs dual flash
    Helio A22 vs Snapdragon 630
    N/A vs Fingerprint Sensor
    N/A vs Quick Charge
    Notched vs Not
    720 x 1520 vs 1080 x 1920

Only major downside of the 6.1 is that it's a grey import from a smaller retailer that would probably be a pain to get them to honour the Aussie consumer laws.

    • Risk if someone does happen.

    • Didn't the 6.1 have issues with flimsy USB C sockets?

    • +3

Currently have 2 Nokia 6.1 with family members bought from Tobydeals. Very nice phone. No complaints. I'd spend the little bit extra on the 6.1 grey import.

      • @Lomie
Nokia 6.1 is a mid range phone this is a low end phone
the 6.1 you have has 4GB Ram and has a SD 636.
IMHO spend the extra $50 and get the Nokia 6.1 instead.

This phone is a big step up (and down) from the Nokia 2.1 which one of my kids have.
The CPU is almost 50% faster, the screen is now 79% screen to body ratio, the camera has been improved,
the RAM has gone from 1GB(2.1) to 2 or 3GB RAM(2.2), the storage has gone from 8GB(2.1) to 16 or 32GB(2.2),it comes with a removable battery (retro 1999)!!
But the battery is now smaller, by a big margin from 4,000(2.1) to 3,000mAh(2.2). The screen has gone from 16:9 to 19:9 ratio, making it a tall skinny screen.
Ironically the screen size has grown from 5.5 inch(2.1) to 5.71 inch(2.2) yet the screen area has got smaller from 83.4 cm2(2.1) 81.4 cm2(2.2).
The 2.1 had dual speakers the 2.2 doesn't. It still only has a micro USB.

Don't know why people are whinging, if you're not a power user (games with high intensity graphics etc), this would be perfect.

Everyday things like Facebook/FB Messenger, Google Chrome, Youtube, Netflix/Stan, Whatsapp, Maps, Texts/Calls/Email will run fine on this.

Plus, as an Android One phone released in June 2019, this will get major updates (Android 9 > Android 10 > Android 11 etc) until June 2021, and regular security patch updates until June 2022. You also get an almost totally stock Android experience. For $149, I don't see how this ISN'T a great deal. This would be especially good for kids or older users I reckon.

  • I am using the Nokia 5.1 plus and it kills all my apps like Whatsapp, viber and wechat to save battery.
This is very annoying as I dont get notification from the above apps.
I have already installed the latest update from August 2019 and they still have not fixed this problem.
    Can someone help?

    • I thought with Android Pie it's done like that automatically to save power and you need to get into your settings

and manually make changes to each app you need to keep open in background.

    • +1

It's in settings, battery, battery activity. Enable the apps you want to provide notifications (at a small cost to battery life).

  • Removable battery is nice-model no, HQ510, does anyone know where to buy spare batteries locally?

I’d assume HMD’s aithorized service centre would stock them but whether they’d sell them publicly is another question.
