Wifi > ZigBee for lights. Here's my experience:

Unreliable connectivity, slight delays between actions even when bypassing the cloud. Sometimes the pairing just mysteriously dies and you need to repair.

None of the above with wifi. I think ZigBee is only useful for low power devices like motion sensors.

I've used a Philips hue hub as well as ZigBee2mqtt. If anyone wants the hub I'm happy to sell it.

    • This is not my experience and I've been using lifx for 3 years, recently switched to hue.

Zigbee is much better in my experience…definitely when we are talking 10+ lights. Plus the more you have the more the range expands due to its mesh networking.

I had like 40+ devices on my wifi, freed up a lot after moving to hue and the performance is much better. I've noticed the opposite to you in terms of slight delay.

The Philips bridge can take 50 lights. There is no way a consumer router will handle 50 lifx lights on wifi. You'll need to start looking for enterprise wifi access points like the Ubiquity Unifi AP Pro.

      • My Linksys EA8500 with OpenWRT handles ~50 WIFI devices no problems. Also, LIFX and Yeelights are instant on my side as long as the cloud is bypassed.

My point exactly. Try get the average consumer to flash their router with custom firmware. Most probably have the router stock from their ISP

    • I had wifi yeelight before. There is always a few seconds delay. I didn’t find this issue with philips hue

  • In addition to the bridge, ppl should be buying sensors or switches to setup these lights?

I have sensors, they work great.
I read up some reviews on the switches, and decided against buying some with the amazon sale.

      Dimming switches is "must have".
Trust me you don't want to pull mobile phone every time you need to switch the light on or off.

Dimmings switches makes use of Hue lights the same as "traditional" while keeping it "smart and connected".

  • Got my white ambiance bulbs today, faster than expected. The bulbs are in white boxes now, I assume just packaging or is it some updated version?

    • +1

Packaging comes in white or purple for different resellers. ie Apple likes all their packaging white.

  • I bought the Echo 2nd Gen and they have just announced the 3rd gen, thinking of returning it and getting the 3rd gen due to the better sound quality and new features, Is it worth paying double the price for 3rd gen?

  • Anyone in Brisbane want to swap a unopened bayonet bulb for a screw one?
