Most new houses have downlights rather than these sort of bulbs. Is there a similar solution?

    • Agree I would have nowhere to use these types of bulbs

      • Not everything will be downlight tho surely. Dining light? Stairs (chandelier usually use e14 tho). Fans light? Etc

    • Is it gu10 connection? It's on sale for 34 dollars

      • I don't know, the house is still being built. Will look into it.

        • Asked the builder, our lights won't be gu10, just a whole downlight assembly that you replace should it go. Does Hue or similar offer something like this?

    • Usually GU10 for new places.

    • I've got downlights throughout my house too but prefer the warm glow from lamps, so I have bought floor lamps for each room equipped with Hue bulbs. We mainly use these rather than the downlights now.

  • I’m seeing some conflicting information on here. Some people say you need the bridge others not.

Can I buy the bulb on sale at $11, and the smart Switch for $29 and have a complete solution? I’m not bothered about controlling it with Alexa, just to have a wireless switch to control a light

Also, I think it’s a shame Phillips haven’t yet got the trendy vintage style filament bulbs in their range, would be a hands down purchased for me if so

You need something that can speak ZigBee. It doesn't necessarily have to be these spy tools (e.g. Alexa). You can do something DIY and use Home Assistant with a ZigBee USB stick.

      • +1

Not for the feint of heart. You would definitely need to be comfortable tinkering with stuff on an ongoing basis. It's been 3 months and I'm still learning. And it doesn't really save you that much vs a bridge if you buy a Pi.

The bonus of course is a) you get to host your own smart devices instead of a proprietary cloud and b) you get to mix and match your automations with any supported device (Xiaomi, Philips, IKEA etc) that is supported so you're not locked into one brand only.

Not sure if they are available in australia yet.

      • Beautiful thanks! Kogan does them too but no wireless switch with them

They will have filament style soon in the new range coming out next month.

    • The dimmer switch can be paired with the bulbs directly (and bought in a kit), but the tap switch on sale here requires the Bridge.

Trust me, you want the bridge anyway. That's how the app controls everything and how automations work (like turning lights on/off when you arrive/leave home, adding motion sensors, creating routines, managing scenes). It's also one of the most cost-effective ways to get some colour bulbs.

    • A single Hue bulb can be manually linked to a single Hue Dimmer switch which will control that globe without the need for a hub.

    Price match with Bunnings?

  • Just purchased 5 bulbs, 1 bridge, 2 switches and 2 Echo Dots for $195. Thanks OP!

  • Has anyone set up the gentle wake up and sleep with Philip Hue I.e. gradually dim or brighten the light on schedule.

Bought Kogansmart light bulbs but I wasn't able to schedule the dimmer.

    • +2

Yes, you can set it as a routine.

      • Nice. Thanks!

  • I've got half a dozen smart bulbs but not really sold on it all, the old light switch works just fine and often quicker imo.

    • +1

Sounds like you're using them as regular dumb lights?

The idea is to be able to automate them. Mine are triggered by ambient light sensors, when it's dark they'll turn on. Got a hallway light that only triggers when it's pitch black and turns off after a few minutes. Got a staircase light that triggers only when the door is opened/closed.

      • For the most case. Other than the odd scheduling or remote switch on. Motion sensor integration could be handy for hallway though looking to switch to diwnlights throughout so something to consider there.

        • +1

Motion sensors are the key to automation. My house is riddled with them and I find it weird when I go to another house and the house doesn't automatically work for me.

          • @trankillity: Do you just use the Phillips Hue motion sensors? They seem a bit pricey!

            • @SuperMrBlob: I have some Hue motion sensors (always waited for a sale to get them), but mostly using Wyze sensors (via Home Assistant).

The benefit of the Hue motion sensors is that as well as motion, they also detect natural light levels in the room and temperature - effectively making them 3 sensors in one. So if you use something like Home Assistant, you can use those sensors to trigger other automations.

        • +1

Yea if you don't automate these things then it's really a waste of money since you can get brighter dumb lights for much less.

Took me a bit to break out of the habit of turning off the stairway lights though, had to block off the light switch with some boxes.

          • @zorrt: Haha yeah point taken. I tried with the app and voice, but yes without sensors i just couldn't see the benefit 90% of the time and reverted to still using the light switch. A bigger home or differing layout probably influences this a lot though. I think i'll post a thread in the forums seeking advice from you seasoned pros as am gonna replace all the lighting soon.

          • @zorrt: I have smart switch on top of old switch as reminder not to do that. After a few weeks you will get used to it. It feels weird now having to turn off lights the old way (flicking the switch)

  • No motion sensors on sale?

  • If you have one bridge and several bulbs, can each family member control each bulb separately? i.e. each person controls their respective room's bulb with their own phone - is this possible?

    • Yes.

      • Thanks :)

  • Great price! Would there be a problem with wifi when you both have hue and lifx running at the same time? I already have some lifx bulbs that's why.

    • +1

No. Hue is ZigBee. Only the hub needs to connect to wifi, unless youre already out of wifi allocation.

      • Good to know. Thanks

      • +1

The hub is hard wired, doesn't use wifi.

        • Sorry my bad. Not sure why I said wifi….

  • Bunnings is open they will beat by 10%

    • +1

How hard is it to get Bunnings to price match Amazon?

  • +1

    No downlight :(

      • The pin looks different to the one I use at home. Mine are two small pins? These are circular

      • without the housing yes.

        • Looks like we could get adaptors to convert these gu10 to mr16 but not sure if they are the same length?

          Anyway out of stock.

          • @chillipaste: Yea our current ones are all MR16, we’re looking to change all to GU10 fittings to utilise the smart lights.

            • @cola2002: I have Yeelight, LIFX, Philips HUE and Kogan (8 x GU10 spotlights) in my home. By far the most reliable have been the Kogan GU10's. I have not needed to reboot them once in the 3 months they have been in. All the others require occasional reboots. The Kogan lights are cheap (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-ambient-rgbw-…) and they use the SmarterHome app which I believe is a rebrand of Tuya. I never use the app. I control them via Google Assistant and Alexa. Also, despite them being only 4.5W each they are brighter than the 50W LG halogens they replaced.

            • @cola2002: If you’re going to do that can you let me know the process as well. Would love to convert over to GU10 but not sure it’s worth the cost.

    • Yeah really want a good deal on the downlights too

    Bridge on backorder

    • I got two Philips Hue bridges that came with starter kits that I can't even get rid of.

      • Assuming this means Bunnings won't price match the Bridge :(

      • Damn I wish I saw this before I ordered

  • Thanks OP

  • Sorry if these are noob questions:

    • If you were to buy either Alexa or Google Home, which would one choose? (price not an issue)

    • Does xiaomi hub work with Philips?

    • Google syncs with Google stuff, so if you have an Android or use Gmail/Google Calendar, it's a no-brainer to go with them. Their voice assistant is also much more useful than Alexa.

Alexa is Amazon-owned and not nearly as useful, however it is quite a bit more open than Google.

    • Amazon, way more and better "apps" (Skills). The home automation stuff is light years ahead of Googles offerings.

    • +1

I have both Google home and Alexa, I find google much more responsive, and more informative when asking questions about random things.
I find more uses for google, it also talks to chrome cast if you have one, so convenient to ask it to play pause volume up/down and turn off TV. Not sure if Alexa can do the same, I eventually stopped using it.

  • Thanks OP!

Stacked with the 20% off with an echo show 5 for the bedroom and grabbed a bunch… Now have enough spares to cover me for a while.

  • How fast is standard Amazon delivery in Australia?

    • About 2-3 days, I use normal shipping.

      • Woohoo, if I'm lucky I'll get it before the weekend.

    • You don't have to cite a source when you haven't even provided any reason.

      • Unreliable connectivity, slight delays between actions even when bypassing the cloud. Sometimes the pairing just mysteriously dies and you need to repair.

None of the above with wifi. I think ZigBee is only useful for low power devices like motion sensors.

    • Would need more information to back your claim.

    • Lol your opinion is contrary to every other review and experience. Try running 40 wifi bulbs in a multi user house and see how rock solid that is for you. Maybe you just got duds or didn't know what you were doing?

    • My experience is complete opposite. Hue stuff via Zigbee is bulletproof, just integrates via the Zigbee hug. Any of the wifi stuff needs seperate apps, have to "link accounts" and rubbish doesn't just add/detect via the my Echos. The two LIFX bulbs I bought would just randomly power themselves on, not respond..

  • Thanks OP - grabbed 5+5 and Switch and Bridge. Just a heads up the Switch is currently showing "Usually dispatched within 6 to 8 weeks" so will be a while before I can play with my new toys!

  • E27 back to $39

    • Now op can change the title to buy one, get free delivery.

    • +1

Keep an eye out on it, from prior sales if the price goes back up, they generally put it back down sometime later in the morning (possibly slowing down sales to be able to to advertise the sale better). Same thing happened with the Philips LED deal a while ago.

  • Out of interest - why does this not come up on pricehipster? Based on that website amazon doesn’t sell philips hue products

    • +2

Price Hipster currently doesn't have all Amazon products on it. May be a project for me to address that next year and get them all on there.

  • Got a Tap Switch for our bedside lamps, but missed out on the E27 bulbs :( I was about to grab a handful more…

  • Thanks Doweyy

  • Any solutions for a chandelier with 5 x B15 bulbs? Maybe a way to convert B22s to B15s while retaining the smart functionality?

    • Or just get rid of the dated looking chandelier. The value of your property will probably go up higher than the cost of removing the chandelier.

      • Renting :(

        • I know that feeling. :(

    • The b15s were on sale (maybe still are?).

      • I don't think B15s exist? E14 seems to be the smallest but Edison not Bayonet

        • Yes sorry my mistake. I was referring to the E14..

        • B15 to e14 adapters exist and may be a better form factor vs b15-b22

  • Anyone has a cool home automation setup to share?

  • Great spot op! Got the lights on sale last time and they are great. Got 5 more lights this time.

  • +1

What a great deal! Shame I live in Perth so by time time I had woken up and checked ozbargain the E27 deal was over.

  • +2

Had JB price match, have Hub in hand:) no waiting on delivery.., though decided ti just get 2 lights, plus with talking about Bunnings 10% price beat, he sold the lights at $10 each.

    • Well done! Must have had a very generous JB team member, surprised they chucked the bulbs down to $10 even though the price was expired and not store policy to price beat by 10%.

      • Yep, he is good, plus reasonable, we have a bunnings just up the road, but just too far to duck out to.. i took in a screen print of the checkout page, then spoke about the 10% if i went to bunnings.

        • Great job! Was wondering if you were able to pm me so I could try price match at Bunnings or JB HIFI as I missed out unfortunately!

          • +1

@JBarg: For sure, it's at work, can do tmw

            • @Austaurean: Thanks so much - you are a legend

              • @JBarg: your 'accepting new messages' isn't turned on.

                • @Austaurean: Sorry, didn't realise that was a feature. Just turned it on!

  • E14s are back up to full price

  • +1

Dammit, all gone. You snooze, you lose. I would have picked up a couple of the tap switches.

  • Damn!

I bought 8 gu10 colour for $57 a couple months ago… would have bought enough to complete the house at $39… snooze/lose
