    Experiences with surf shark?

    • A guy at work said cheaper and more servers / less people on service so less congestion

      No personal experience though

  • +3

What's the John Dory with these massive cashbacks lately from VPNs?

  • +1

It was 80% cashback last week. Sign of a phoenix.

    • 25% is just what I saw before the offer went live, but will take it out of the title for transparency, thanks!

  • +1

Does it work for Netflix and Amazon Prime Video ?

    • +1

      You should check the description

    • +2

      In the description it said
"Access to Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, SkyGo, BBC and many other streaming sites"

Doesn't mention ChromeCast but works with many other way to stream
"Native apps for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, Linux, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, extensions for Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari (coming soon)"

  • +1

I was tempted at 80%. Now this might be the tipping point. Cheers CR.

  • I might have to jump on this. SS experiences, anyone?

  • Been using Surfshark for a few months now. Getting around 70-80/30 consistently on my 100/40 link to a local server. Haven’t had any issues so far.

  • hmm signed up for the 80% deal. Should I cancel then resign up for 85%?

    • so it won't work if i re-sign up with the same email address? I think it's the spirit of OzB to save as much as possible.

      • +1

I think that might make you ineligible for cashback again as you need to be a new SS user unfortunately..?

  • Do you have the link for the 3 year plan at 83% off … I can only see a 2 year plan

    • +1

Make sure to click through the link in the OP, and then press Shop Now on the CR page and it will automatically take you to the 3 year deal (seems to be a link that was generated just for CR).

      • Ah ok - thanks for that … also noticed I could use the 3YOFFER promo code

        • +1

Yeah I think it's the same coupon, but just to be safe I'd recommend going back through CR to the direct page (instead of inputting a coupon).

        • +1

Hi jazzymc. As doweyy eluded to earlier, please only use the CR link, as it has the code embedded and contains affiliate tracking details. Don't want your tracking cookie going astray by entering the code manually via a different link. Thanks.

  • Does this work in China?

NordVPN claimed to work. But I tried last week following its instructions and didn't connect at all. Different settings all give 'connecting' for ever.

    • no option for China on my app.

edit: or do you mean using it from China? (as below)

      • use it within China's network.

tried connecting to servers in the US, Japan, and Singapore. none worked.

    • As I understand it using a VPN in China is a constant game of outrunning the authorities as they play whacka-a-mole banning IP addresses on China's national router. OK, I made up the national router.

Probably better off getting private hosting (ie rent a dedicated or VPN server or cloud instance) and run a VPN on that. Setting it up isn't for the faint hearted although there may be AWS or similar VMs ready to go for this purpose, I haven't looked.

That will be the future in Australia unless the brainwashed population ceases to vote for the Laberal Party. They have already implemented metadata collection and internet blocklists. The next step will be banning offshore VPN providers as well as continuing attempts to outlaw encryption use by citizens.

The only way to stop this is not voting Laberal.

The Greens have voted against every single piece of security state legislation that is currently violating every Australian citizen's human rights. Specifically Article 12 of the UN Human Rights Charter, the right to be free of State surveillance.

Up to this point Australian's have demonstrated that they are morons. Most of them think metadata surveillance is a conspiracy theory that the Government hasn't already implemented.

      • Decline fron democracy to tyranny. here we go. Plato predicted it right :(

    • My friend travels to China on a regular basis and he swears by ExpressVPN. You can buy it one month at a time to use while over there.

  • +3

Damn, I didn't do step 2 - so paid the 10% GST/vat. Plus I signed up a couple of days ago when it was 80% cash back not 85%. Worst bargain hunter ever.

    • +5

Hand in your OzB membership card now 💳

  • Anyone used this in China?

    • Need SS but that's SpecSavers not SurfShark do ya?

    • +1

Forget that, just looked at timestamps ….me need BrainSavers. Apologies.

  • +1

I've been using them for a few months now, on individual devices behind a pi hole.

The Android app works great, the Cherokee extension equally great.

    Would recommend.

  • I did it last week at %80 too ! damn. And I had to pay Vat.
It is pretty good. I can get around 3mbps when I switch to watch Netflix. and it works with US servers.

    • Which US servers? They're not working for me

      • Use Detroit.
Also dont sign out of your account. enable VPN while already in you account.

  • Do I need VPN? No.
    Is it a bargain? Yes.
Do I care that I don't actually get the cashback until up to 95 days later and I'm actually A$99.99 in the hock until then? No.

Yup, just about describes my daily OzB visit.

Happy to say that it works off the bat with iOS and I can view American Netflix again.
Waiting to try it on the home computer. Not sure if the SmartDNS would work on a HiSense TV, but anything goes.

    • I read your comment and laughed. I was thinking the same thing! No need for a VPN but look at the cash back lol

  • +1

Will it work when streaming Netflix thru Chromecast?

    • +2

The app (iOS/Android) does the VPN thingmajig on the device. So, if you are casting from your device, it should work.

If you are streaming from the Netflix app on CC, it would probably require setting the VPN passthrough on your router, but it depends on your router model.
      https://surfshark.com/blog/setup-vpn-router might help.

On the other hand, once you are registered, it has SmartDNS which can be set on your PS4, XBox, Apple TV, FireStick, etc. Same VPN access features, but lacks privacy/security.

  • Dang….would someone tell me why I need to be paying for Torguard instead of this to make me feel better?

  • Thanks to op for link. I am doing something wrong but can’t work out what. Shows $au99 before I go to pay. Using PayPal but adds 10%tax. Showing as paying $au on left and eng us flag on right. What am I missing? Thanks
Edit..tried credit card and no tax, seems using PayPal will add the tax.

    • Didn't want to share my card details so paid using Google pay

  • Have 12 months left of my 3 year NordVPN subscription. Wondering whether it's worthwhile to double down and get Surfshark set up to take advantage of this deal, or wait for the 12 months for something else to pop up.

    • You may get higher speeds since Nord is slow compared to PIA IME.

      • Thanks for taking the time to reply. You're not the first to tell me PIA is faster than Nord. The 3yr deal with Nord was too good to pass up at the time. I'll look more seriously into the alternatives. So many of these 8*% cashback deals going for VPN's lately, I don't want to miss out when they dry up.

    • i'd like to know too. Have ~2 yrs left on mine. But $17 for a 3 yr sub is a no brainer me thinks.

  • I don't really understand what VPN is for. Is it for security purposes or what?

    • +1

It's for accessing media that is behind geoblocks (eg Netflix has twice as much content as the Aus library).

Another reason is for privacy (a VPN creates an encrypted connection between you and the server you want to connect to, making it impossible for your ISP, or anyone in between you and the website, to read).

  • Haven't gotten the cashrewards confirmation email yet, what about others?

    • Just got mine

      • Same - just showed up!

    • Edit: finally got it wheew!

      • How long was the wait?

It's usually pretty quick for my but I have a sneaking suspicion that I didn't properly disable my tracker-blocking during the transaction

        • Received the email after an hour

  • just got my cashrewards confirmation which comes to 82.61$ for a 97.19$ payment. I think it escludes tax that makes Upto 99.99$

    • how long did it take for you to receive the cash back? I'm still waiting on mine. First time Cashback user so im a bit worried.

  • Got my cashrewards tracking email, it looks like the cashback will be $82.61, so the cost is $17.38 after cashback.

    • Yep me too

    • did math and the difference is 14.58. how did you figure 17.38?

    • +1

Mine is same. I paid $99.99 excluding tax so should definitlely be $85 cashback. Cashrewards got it wrong for nordvpn as well. Ended up cancelling that subscription. Is there anyone from Cashrewards who can shed some light on the matter? Thanks

      • +3

Hi bluebagger. Definitely not an error. Your AUD payment is converted to USD upon reaching Surfshark's affiliate network/partner. This is then converted back to AUD upon tracking back to us. So there's two transfer conversions that we have no control over at any stage, and we're at the mercy of the exchange rate. We should be thankful however as Surfshark could in fact pay cashback ex-GST, which they've not done. Exactly the same process occurs with NordVPN as they too use the same affiliate network/partner. Hope this helps :)

        • +1

          Hi TA,

Thanks for taking the time to explain this issue. I exchanged a couple of emails with cashrewards support via email, as I and others purchased before these clarifications were on ozbargain.

I apologise in advance for pushing it, but I'm still not comfortable with the explanation!

My transaction which was in AUD and the website was in AUD. I have also double checked the Cashrewards website and there was no mention of backend issues effecting the cashback amount due to conversions which I could see.

In this case Cashrewards advertised an 80/85/90% cashback. We paid in AUD and as such in my interpretation of ACCC's guidelines, I would reasonably expect a cashback of 80/85/90% of our AUD amount:

          https://www.accc.gov.au/publications/advertising-selling/adv…

I beleive that either the advertising on cashrewards website needs to be updated to explain that 90% cashback is actually 87-90% depending in exchange rate (mine tracked as AUD 97.19 instead of 99.99 AUD that I paid), or cashrewards needs to discuss this with your partners at the affiliate network.

I was wondering if you could please raise this again with your team?

          • +1

@aurum87: Hi aurum87. We’ve added this to the Special Terms for clarity…

The AUD amount that tracks to your Cashrewards account may differ to the paid amount due to international exchange rates. Your initial payment is converted to USD, then converted back to AUD when reported to us. The advertised Cashback rate is based on the reported amount, not the paid amount. Cashrewards has no control over this process.

            • +1

              @tightarse: Great, Thanks!

              • @aurum87: Thank you for raising this. Quality feedback such as this is gold and helps no end with our member journey. Have a great day!

  • Cashback showed up - $85.07 :)

    • What total amount did you pay? Did you pay VAT/GST?

      • USD 69.99 no GST

  • I already have a 3 yr nordvpn subscription, works with netflix on a PC, but not on my android tv with the app which is 90% what I use to watch netflix. Is SS guaranteed to work as advertised?

    • +1

      @avex87
Hey I also use nord and have painstakingly spoken to support and confirmed at the moment it does not support android box/fire tv os. I've tried surfshark on trial and if you connect to US Denver server, it definitely works on android tv. But it seems only US netflix works, I tried Japan netflix and they didn't work.

    • Consider buying an Android box, or Google Chromecast, and install the VPN on it, then stream to TV as you would from any other Android device (but you get a HDMI connection in this case).

  • Anyone know if this will work with Optus sport?

    • It should. But I don't know what you mean - will you be able to access Optus Sport free? No. Will you be able to connect to watch Optus Sport, then yes, unless Optus Sport has specifically blocked IP addresses the VPN uses (in which case the VPN can usually get a new IP range).

      • Yeah sorry I should have been more clear.. a fair few vpns ips are blocked on Optus sport , so just trying to figure out if this is one of them, for when I am os. I'll have to read up on the new IP Range thing. Cheers

  • how long does it take to get the cashback email?

  • Is anyone else getting only 24 month plan? Don't see any 3 year plan.

Edit: NVM, was using wrong link

  • Can anyone comment on BBC iPlayer working as of today? VPN, Smart DNS or both?

    • +1

I had to create a BBC account to check, and it works on my android phone, using both Vypr and PureVPN (buffering on PureVN).

I don't have SurfShark, so I can't comment on that, but the player itself works fine.

I don't know if I'd be comfortable with their privacy policy, and in particular their data sharing with third parties.

These third parties include Google Analytics, marketing providers, live chat and support providers, security providers, storage and infrastructure providers, and some payment processors, and they state in their privacy policy that they do not accept any responsibility or liability for the data protection of privacy practices of third parties.

Instead, they advise users to read data protection and privacy policies of these third parties - that's a lot of privacy policies to read, just to find out what information these third parties collect (and how these third parties might share this information).

Purportedly it shares only "non personally identifiable information" but can we be sure it can't be traced back to you:

    Information collected:

"The information we collect on our Website may include anonymous “traffic data” provided by the host or similar provider of such information (e. g. Google Analytics) that does not personally identify you but may be helpful for marketing purposes or for improving the Services we offer. Analytics is the process of collecting, analyzing, and reporting aggregate data. This information may include which pages visitors visit and how long visitors may stay on a particular page. It may also provide information about what browser, network, or device is used to visit our Website. In addition, when you visit our Website, we may also retain your IP address, a unique identifier for your computer or other access device. This helps us diagnose problems with our server, to administer our Website, or to display the content according to your preferences.

When you use our app, we may collect advertising identifiers – unique, user-resettable IDs for advertising, provided by third parties (e. g. Google Play). Advertising IDs are used for marketing purposes and user analytics and are not connected to user’s personal information. You can reset your identifier or opt out of personalized ads by adjusting your device settings."

Use of cookies and web beacons:

"A cookie is a small string of information that transfers to your computer for identification purposes. Cookies can be used to follow your activity on the Website and that information helps websites to understand your preferences and improve your website experience. You can turn off all cookies in the event you prefer not to receive them. You can also have your computer warn you whenever cookies are being used. They can be used to confirm the receipt of, and response to, our emails, including those that you forward to friends and family; and they help deliver a more personalized online experience."

    Third party interaction:

"We use third-party service providers to help handle parts of our business. These parties will only use the minimum amount of your data as specified above in Clause 1 for the purpose of carrying out the work as agreed with us. Such service providers are:

Marketing service providers – we use them to manage our contacts and automate our marketing.
Third-party payment processors – they help us to process payments.
Storage ad infrastructure providers and Ads service providers – they help us to deliver targeted advertising to the Website visitors.
Live chat and support service providers – we use them to provide live chat technology and provide support to our users.
Security service providers – we work with them to provide improved security and performance.

Type of information shared with third parties:

"As you probably already understood we do not have much information to share. Even so, we do not disclose your information to others, unless we are ordered by a court of competent jurisdiction to do so. We do not sell or trade your data with anyone."

    Device and browser information collected:

"The information we collect on Trust DNS may include anonymous “traffic data” provided by the host or similar provider of such information (e. g. • I think that PP is a website PP and not about your VPN usage information, and is referring to the data they collect when you're logged onto your account or from randoms visiting their website.

It may be better to use the Windows program and not the browser extensions or mobile app as they probably are garnering more data when you use those.

  • +1

$14.99 for 3 years is a little too cheap for me.

How can they run good quality servers at that price? What are the speeds like?

    • Ads.

Either through their own software, or by sharing "non personally identifiable data" of the VPN users, to companies like Google to serve targeted ads.

Which is a worry if you use the VPN for privacy, but I think most people in this thread use it to bypass geoblocks, to watch/access content that's not available in Australia (in which case it probably wouldn't be an issue).

      • That's a worry for me. I don't want my VPN provider selling me ads, that means they analyse my traffic to an extent in order to serve me targetted ads.

  • Got $85.39 cashback confirmed from email.

  • I've used PIA and Nord. Nord was much better, PIA is blocked by Netflix regularly. Might give this one a go at this price.

  • I dont get how to change country to avoid VAT??

  • Hey all, just bought it and using hulu. Any recommendations on what Country and region to choose to get better streaming speeds? I've just chosen Dallas
