Need Help - Bosch Washing Machine Making Weird Noise

We recently bought a Bosch front loader washing machine (model no. wap28482au) from the Good Guys (https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/bosch-9kg-front-load-washer-w…).

The washing machine has been making a weird noise since our very first wash (https://imgur.com/a/GObcTH7). The noise only goes on during the wash cycle. It stops when it gets to the spin cycle.

We were also told by a store rep that the machine is German-made, but later on I found out it is made in China :(

We have contacted the Good Guys, who recommended us to contact the manufacturer for repair. Then we spoke to Bosch and the company that does the repair. They said they will send someone out to have a look but if there is no issue, they will charge us a call-out fee.

Is it normal for the machine to make noise like that?

Would you recommend getting a replacement instead? We are not confident that the machine would last long considering it seems to be defective from the very start.

I am also tempted to return the machine (still within 30 days) and get this one instead: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/487655.

What would you do in this situation? Any help would be much appreciated!

Edit (7 Oct):
Thank you everyone for your recommendations. We have contacted the Good Guys, and the store manager at the Good Guys said it sounded like a "dead on arrival" and they will send a driver to have a look (not sure what that means) and may give us a replacement unit.

As suggested by fellow Ozbargainers, I did an empty cycle here: https://imgur.com/a/Qyd8V7p

and here (with detergent drawer open): https://imgur.com/a/NdXiWfz

Can someone please tell me what you think? It definitely doesn't sound as bad but it is still rather loud… (or does it just sound like water splashing???)

Who did the setup and installation of the washing machine?
Read the manual page 37-38 - 1st setup; and page 33 - removing transport locks
If this happens since your very first wash, if not manufacturer defects, I suspect it's the transport pins/locks that didn't get removed. Please check this ASAP! Make sure the holes (usually 4) behind the washing machine are not plugged with the pins/locks.

Have you tried running the machine with an empty load? It could be too much load/uneven weight.

I forgot to remove transport bolts and it didn't sound like that. It just travelled around the room on spin cycle :s

Thank you Brokenglish. The Good Guys set up and installed the machine for us. We made sure the transport locks are removed before they left.

We have tried doing a small load and it made the same noise… so may be not a load issue?

  • Not normal. Call the support number.

Would also report the sales guy to TGG, but I doubt anything would happen.

    • Hi John Kimble
So we should get the repair guys to come and have a look? Just don't want to be charged the call-out fee in case there is actually no issue.

      • What does it sound like empty? Others have said it sounds like normal slapping of contents inside, so rule that out maybe…

If it was overloaded, it wouldn't make as much slapping noises because there would be less/no room for the clothes to fall and slap into the walls as much.

  • You would be swapping a Chinese Built 9kg unit for a German Built 8kg unit…

    What size suits your needs?

From your Video, it looks like the Machine is Overloaded.

Maybe have a look and see what the Manual says about load size and operating.

You might find an 8kg unit too small.

    • Thanks holdenmg. I would definitely prefer a German-made unit over a one made in China. That's why I asked the sales rep at the time of purchase…

At the moment there are only the two of us, but maybe we will expand our family??? Let's say if we have a 3-4 ppl household, what size would you recommend?

In terms of overloading, we tried to put everything we can find in order to fill up the load, so the machine in the video might actually be overloaded. But we have also tried washing a much smaller load, and the machine kept making the same noise :(

      • <8kg is 3-4 people
8kg or larger is 4+ people

        • +2

2 people at my place with an 11kg… what’re you trying to say?

  • Mine sounds similar, although also think you've overloaded it

    • Hi bdl,

I thought it was normal but then the noise seems to be coming from the detergent drawer (or behind it)…

      • +1

Have you pulled off the detergent drawer and had a look?

Although I suspect it just sounds louder there because that's an opening.

      • I would definitely try (as suggested above) an empty cycle to see if the noise changes when there is nothing in the machine

Is Bosch sending out someone, or Good Guys? Beware of Good Guys' repair people, I've found they are dodgy (installed a machine but didn't check secureness of water inlet pipe, resulting in a flooded apartment, then they admitted fault and said OK to their insurance paying to repair damage, but then refusing to pay after the damage was repaired).

At least if do you through Bosch, even if it's not at fault, you can speak to customer service and say you bought Bosch because you thought it was German engineering, quality, etc, etc and ask directly for them to waive/reimburse the inspection cost).

Another option is to push Bosch a bit harder now and send them video like you did to us and say again, you bought Bosch because quality, etc, etc and see if you can get them to waive the cost of inspection.

  • Your contract is with TGG. They are the reseller. Read up on the ACL. TGG have history with trying to avoid their legal obligations.

That said, if they come out and there is no problem, then yes, you need to pay for that call out.

  • All I'm hearing is the clothes and water slopping around. Is there some sort of mechanical noise as well?

    • That's what I initially thought - clothes slopping around.

I did an empty load as recommended and I'm not sure anymore….

I had the same experience a few years ago.
    Good guys installed it.
Here’s the video of the machine making noises: https://youtu.be/GMB5fnL3Bx8
    And after the repair: https://youtu.be/61Jps7GRdxA

If I were you, I would return it and get a German-made one.

Edit: actually yours sounds different…. maybe it is normal. Have you tried to run it empty? Mine was making noises only during the spin cycle.

    • Wow yours made a really squeaky noise! Glad you got it fixed. Our is relatively quiet during the spin cycle.

I would definitely prefer a German-made one. Have spoken to the Good Guys and they said they will send someone out to have a look and probably give us a replacement.

How do I go about to get a swap for a machine? Should I insist of a full refund and buy a German-made model from them instead?

    • I did an empty cycle here: https://imgur.com/a/Qyd8V7p

and here (with detergent drawer open): https://imgur.com/a/NdXiWfz

What do you think? Does it just sound like water splashing? or does it still sound like there is something loose?

I just thought the wash cycle should be quieter than that…

      • I’m no expert but it kinda sounds like normal to me. Just the sound of water albeit a bit loud. Maybe it’s not as quiet as some other models… have you searched online what your model should sound like? Sometimes you find review videos online which can be helpful to determine if your machine is not normal.
As for swapping, if you can return it for a full refund within 30 days no questions asked, then I’d ask them to swap without additional handling/installing fees. If they say no, then you can just return it for a full refund and buy the German made one. Or the 30-day return you’re referring to is based on the ACCC consumer guarantee provision, then you have the right to ask for a refund only if a problem is major, otherwise they will just repair it.

My washing machine is 35 years old and it makes a helluva racket. But it refuses to break down, which is rather annoying because I wouldn’t mind a nice new quiet one.

  • EcoSilence Drive, it sounds like something is loose.
Get a repair man out under warranty that is definitely not normal. You will not be charged a call out fee.

    • Have spoken to the Good Guys and they said they will send a 'driver' out to have a look and probably give us a replacement. Though I would prefer a German-made unit, just not quite sure how I go about to swap into one.

I also tried doing an empty cycle: https://imgur.com/a/Qyd8V7p

What do you think? Does that sound normal to you?

      • -1

Mine sounds very very similar when empty and it's been going fine for 2-3 years

    • He might get charged if they decide there's nothing wrong with it.

Here's mine. I don't hear the droning/throbbing? sound yours seemed to have in your empty video (but maybe that's just water sloshing???) My noise is mostly clothes slapping in the machine…it doesn't sound as bad in real life…maybe my phone mic/tinny phone speakers make it sound worse than it is.

It does sound like your original video a bit…I didn't factor in that it would sound different in real life vs recording.

I had a Bosch fridge that failed within a year. Their tech support was a real shocker for 3 long weeks before finally proceeding with warranty repairs. Instead of replacing the motor, they 'resuscitated' it so I got rid of the fridge not long after. Until the fix, I wasted a lot of time and money buying food each night for dinner (summer season) and on takeaways.

    • This is a washing machine

  • Any updates?

    • +1

      Hi John

Thanks for uploading the video (which was very helpful), and sorry for not responding sooner.

I ended up getting the machine I initially wanted - the German made model as a replacement, which has been working really well.

But then the German unit actually makes the same noise like the one we had (and similar to yours). So I guess it must be a sound Bosch washing machine makes?

Anywho, your (and everyone else's) help is much appreciated :)
