Was looking at a car stand to change radiator hoses,

Just get a HQ Kingwsood 202 and you won't have to worry about stands…

  • Ratchet or pin?
    What weight would one need?

    Tough choices.

    • Pin, more than what your car weighs in case you end up needing to sit the car on 4 stands. Also make sure the height suit your needs. Can obviously test this by jacking up your car from minimum height to a point where you able to change the tyre, to max and measure the heights.

      • You mean more than what 1/4 of your car weighs, if you need all 4 under it.

Usually 50% of your car weight is super overkill.

Sorry i just thought what i said is quite clear. If a pair of jack stands can handle 1000kg then two pairs can handle 2000kg. As long as your car is not anywhere close to 2000kg you're good. But as usual stick your wheels under the car along with the jack stands if you decide to go under it.
Edit: How much more is up to you, for what i know, everyone just normally buys the 3 tonne stands as it'll cover pretty much every car you'll ever own.

@bogak: Yep, if you're going to get under a car max capacity is a good starting point. Give me overkill over kill (as unlikely as it is) any time. Pins are okay obviously (esp twin pins) but I prefer my screw threads where the load is distributed. Not generally available these days.

Good price for the 1200 and 1500kg double pin models

            • @[Deactivated]: That you stalking me with your negs now gimmeabreak? How did the Craft Cartel vote go? Worked out the simple arithmetic yet?

    • I don't think ratchet or pin makes too much difference. Pin is easier to lose though.

have a look at the rating of your jack, mine was 1000kg for a 1500kg vehicle, so 1200kg (each stand) was enough for me.

  • How easy are the ramps to use with one person and average driving skill?

    • Neither of my normal cars come anywhere close to being able to use ramps like these - the front bumper hits the ramp long before the wheels get near.
I had to make my own from some treated-pine beams…

If you aren't driving something with massive ground clearance, then take some measurements before you buy.

    • It can sometimes be difficult to get them to stay still when you first make contact to drive up them - that is, they might drag/push along the ground, instead of stay steady, even with the 'grip' thing they adverstise underneath. If you can put another type of material under them, like carpet or something a bit course, that can help provide friction to keep them in place as you make contact, and then the weight of the car will obviously secure them

  • I have had a pair of these stands for over ten years and they are still going strong (does this go without saying)?

  • Is that a pair or just 1? Doesn't say on their site.

Pair - had a look at them in person yesterday.

Also, in the pic with the box, at the bottom it says 1 x pair :)

  • SCA also have some stands on special.

These automotive deals have been great. I'm sure the stores still make some money but I've spent bucketloads on the cars in the last 3 months.

    • that's old prices and there's no stock anywhere, if you list all car stands that does not come up.
