don't forget "forgot to turn it on Red"

  • Are these really good prices? More interested in the baby Q, reviews look solid

    • Well I got my Baby Q in October 2017 off eBay Good Guys for $249.20. There was a $59.80 voucher applied off the retail price off $299. So while this price isn't the best ever, it's only $5 more.

      • +2

Weber is an American company, back in 2017 your dollar was worth 10% more than it is now in USD, so this is much cheaper as far as purchasing power goes.

        • Back in 2017, Australian companies were making more profit with the stronger Aus dollar.

    • +1

I'd say it's a good price. Webers don't get discounted very often. I have a Baby Q but mine has the high lid and temperature gauge (Good Guys ones do not). Has cooked for 10 people easily and quickly and cooks well. Personally though, I'd rather have the higher lid and temp gauge but if you're on a budget, this isn't a bad deal at all :)

Can see the difference with the Premium: https://www.outdoor-living.com.au/shop/barbeques/weber-q

      • Baby Black Premium looks great, not worth the extra $100 though! Or is it?

      • Webers don't get discounted very often.

DJs has them on special at least four times a year (mid season sale x2 and Clearance x2)

Source: used to work there and had to haul 40kg BBQs around which is heaps fun when it's 80% of what you weigh …

        • +1

Premium models aren't often discounted. DJ sells the normal versions like Good Guys.

          • @nafe: the only difference with premium is the temperature gauge, as far as I can tell….

            • +1

@crazyj: Temp gauge, higher domed lid, and continuous spark starter (can hold and keep holding to get it to light).

I was just pointing out that when zonarhd said they don't get discounted, they were referring to the Premium models, not the regular.

        • +2

I could fit you in my front pocket :P

      • Premium is better for sure, but at RRP v this (with discounted eBay gift cards) it's a pretty sizeable price difference

        • -1

better how? temperature gauge and what else?

          • @crazyj: It has a higher lid (390mm Height with lid closed on premium compared to 350mm on standard). Better for roasts, allows more heat to be kept in.

            • -1

@zonarhd: 4cm is not really worth it.

Thermometer.. get a proper probe one or the weber igrill

None of the specialty stores really discount the Premiums so these at a massive discount are a much better option.

            • @zonarhd: Do we get extra 4cm by going from Baby Q to Weber Q?
I am trying to compare Baby Q Premium vs Weber Q Standard. :)

Edit: It looks like we don't - closed lid height for Baby Q and Weber Q is the same.

    • i love my baby webber used it lots roasting cooking baby Q is good 4 people.

    • Can confirm, the best BBQ I've ever owned. Easy to take camping etc too.

  • Been looking at these for a while. Currently living in a rental property that has a natural gas line/hook up to the balcony, and plan to be living here at least for a couple more years. Would people recommend going for a Weber Q with natural gas (and potentially selling it second hand when we move in a couple years if our next place doesn't have a natural gas hook-up), or just going with the LPG model from the outset?

    • +2

LPG as you can take it on picnics/camping/etc.

    • +3

They are amazingly economical on lpg.

    • -2

If you cook once a month for 2 years thats 24 times overall. id say you probably can get on average 5 cooks (uneducated guess) per LPG which is about $18 per tank which is 5 tanks that works out to be $90 over 2 years. if Natural gas costs you even a third of that then thats $60 savings across the 2 years. ask yourself this question. Can i sell my weber for $60 less than i bought it? if you sell it for a couple hundred less (less demand for natural gas model) and buy a new one for a couple hundred more, did i really make a good investment by going natural first to save on gas?

of course all the above is based on pseudo numbers.

Weber lasts well over 8 years (upto 15 is not uncommon). If you go natural and you know you can keep that option its the obvious choice for you and the above does not apply.

      • +19

Mate, I can get like 50 cooks out of a 9kg gas tank.

        • +2

Weber Q ia pretty economical on the gas. I have 2 bottles which I rotate so I'll never run out. I only ever visit the Swap n Go every 4-5 months…

        • +1

Agreed.. I can get around 50-80 cooks out of a 9kg bottle. The Q2000 model is super efficient

        • +2

Woah! But how do you cram them all inside?

          • +2

@seamonkey: They are Little Chefs from the movie Rataouille….. :D

        • -2

I think 50 is a bit of an over estimate. But definately 20-30 should be possible. But this is based on the amount of time you bbq for.

I like to say 24 hours would be achievable per 8.5kg LPG.

          • +5

@[Deactivated]: These are my rough calcs.

Q2000 is 12.7 Mj per hour

1kg of LPG = 50 megajolues an hour

            9kg bottle is = 450 megajolues

450/12.7 = 35.4 hours average dinner cook time for me is about 20min (steak sausage burger nothing fancy)

Should get approx 100 cooks on a 9kg bottle

I know a 9kg lasts me about a year. I don't do roasts or low n slow on mine I have other BBQ for that

            • @whoistheg: Thanks for that! Everyone's milage is going to vary. I do a lot of roasting so will always get less amount of cooks than other people who are doing steaks and snags etc.

Another thing to mention about these is the roasting trivets, they can be somewhat expensive and not something you need on a standard kettle bbq. You can also do low n slow on a kettle bbq too.

Might be something to keep in mind for some people.

  • This is awesome, thanks OP, i've been looking to get one for a little while now. Bought the Q2000 in black :)

  • Thanks. Been planning on a baby q, and this plus the recent eBay gift voucher deal makes it very cheap

  • +2

Can anyone comment on the big difference between the Q and the Family Q models? Obviously there is a difference in terms of the grilling area (1800 sq cm vs 2400 sq cm), but what does that mean in practice? How many people can I actually cook for on these sizes?

With discount, the Q + a portable cart = $464.80; the Family Q (already has a cart) = $568. Worth the extra $104 for the bigger, better model? I'm leaning towards yes, but would appreciate any advice!

    • +2

I was in the same boat as you last and decided to take a plunge on the family Q. Best decision and no regrets. With more area surface, you can cook more in a go when needed and can roast bigger cut of meats like ribs, lamb etc. Easy to clean and can move around conveniently when needed.

    • +3

I just bought the Family Q too.

My inlaws have Baby Q and 1000. They are always shifting food around and using mathematical equations to ensure all food comes out at the same time. I can easily justify the extra money just to avoid that.

Like some other things, the extra size would no doubt come in handy……given the opportunity to use it.

      I’ll show myself out…….

    • +3

I've used all the Weber models and this is my experience:
      Baby Q - Good for 2-4 people
      Weber Q - Good for 4-6 people
      Family Q - Good for 6-8 people

That's not to say that you couldn't cook for 6 people on a Baby Q, or 10 on a family Q, but you would definitely have to rotate food around or cook your food in stages. Just my 2c.

      • Thanks folks, took the plunge and bought the Family Q. Appreciate the insights!

    • Baby Q - 1 burner
      Normal Q - bigger with 1 burner
Family Q - even bigger with 2 burners

  • Does anyone know if you can get a store to match the eBay deal ?

Im looking for the Family Q NG (natural gas) but they have not listed it on the ebay store ?

Could I buy a LPG one and when I go and pick it up try and get them to swap it for a NG and I pay the extra ?

    • ebay stuff don't like touch in store 20% off come from ebay and not them but if manger he might do it.

  • Does anyone know if this stand https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Weber-6579-Q-Portable-Cart/1…
is suitable for the Weber Baby Q?

    • +1

Baby Q is also known as Q1000 so yes, it's suitable

  • Got one! Thankyou

    • Hey mate, did you C&C, I can't seem to see the option on the q2000

      • +1

Yes C&C and I got the confirmation email about 6pm yesterday that's it's ready for pickup.

        • Thanks, ended up finding it for C&C but another colour

  • -1

Had one of these and got rid of it after 2 months. If you're chasing "char" for your steaks then I wouldn't recommend as the fire isn't hot enough. People call the greyish-pale looking steaks the weber style of cooking.

    • Have been disappointed in mine as well. I live in an apartment so balcony space is minimal and this is my only choice - doesn't get hot enough for chargrilling, can do sausages and chicken on it OK though. If you have the space just go for a 4 burner.

      • Agreed. It’s decent for a slow and low cook but terrible for a sear.

    • +7

Turn on your Weber on high for 10min closed before cooking your steaks they will get nice grill marks and char.

    • +2

I've had a baby q and now own a q2000 and have had no problem getting a char with either. Light, crank the gas, close the lid, let things heat up for 10 mins and away you go

      • Any thoughts on the baby q vs the q2000 ? Can't decide which to get. Read a few forums suggesting the baby q gets hotter than the q2000 but it also has less space.

        • +1

The Q2000/Q2200 and the Q1000/Q1200 contain the same burner. The 3000/3200 contain an additional burner.

Which is why obviously the baby q (1000/1200) gets hotter than the Q2200.

          • @[Deactivated]: Are you sure about that? The q1000/1200 burner looks smaller, has a different part number and lower BTU rating than q2000/q2200 burner.

        • The baby is a bit small if you're regularly cooking for more than 2-3 people. I haven't noticed a huge difference in heat/how well things cook - can highly recommend both

      • Define char, or are you confused with grill marks? Take a look at this pic of my rib eye steak. BBQ was cranked up for 15mins and cooked for 3mins each side and meat was-overcooked to well-done! Yes you get light char grill-marks, but u won’t get that actual BBQ taste https://imgur.com/YuOl0YK

Whereas if you look at the second pic, that’s what I define as actual char-grilled achieving the Maillard reaction / BBQ taste (btw used Weber kettle) https://imgur.com/aRSSUo8

        • (profanity) now I really want a steak!

        • +1

Fair enough, you're not going to get that level of charring with with a Q (or most gas BBQs for that matter); however, I've never cooked a steak on the Q that finished up "greyish-pale".

      • The Weber Qs are portable and can be used on any table. This means that the Btu of the burner has to be low. So this means the user should cook with the hood down to retain heat. If you're after the power of a charcoal BBQ or 4 burner bbq then this isnt for you.

  • Thank you OP! Been looking for a while. Unsure on the patio cart.. has anyone bought/used an alternative trolley bench for their Weber? Just need space for the gas bottle to sit on as well as a plate or so. IKEA have some options but little unsure.

  • +1

    I want the premium :( …

  • Does anyone know if this comes with a regulator ? thanks

    • +1

All BBQs in Australia have to come with a regulator.

  • +1

These things are rock solid! I have had my Weber family Q for 10 years now. Gets left out in the elements and apart from a slightly faded cart its works as well as the day I bought it.

  • Is the family q on the sale a decent price too?

    • Yes purchase 5 hours ago

  • Thanks OP just what i was looking for

  • +1

Love my baby q. Going strong for over 10 years. Just took it camping this long weekend.

  • Awesome, thanks OP. Got the Family Q and a few accessories with the discount.

  • Thanks op. Been looking at getting one of these for summer. Had 100+ in ebay vouchers lying about so only paid 140 odd. Bargain.

  • -3

I wouldn’t even bother getting a Weber Q 1000/2000/3000 as they don’t have the thermometer, raised hood height and reliable electro ignition. The thermometer is a no brainer must have..

    • What benefit does the thermoeter give? I will only be cooking snags, burgers, kebabs. Not that i matters as i already got me Q1000 today so will have to live with it either way.

    • Or learn to cook without one, or just use an external thermometer and probe (at grill level)

  • DO i need the tailor made hot plate for the family q? Or are both sides a grill plate

Don't weber have a stainless steel plate so I can hammer it down with the scrapper?

    • You get two grill plates with it. If you want a flat plate you have to purchase that separately.

  • +1

After applying the PGGUY code, the Q2000 is only coming down to $375.20 for me with C&C. Did the extra 10% off expire? Is this still a decent deal for that price? I'm moving out of home in a month and I'm thinking this would be a smart buy for the upcoming summer.

    • i Didn't even notice this. I ended up paying $568 for a family q, did this include the 10+20%?

  • +2

Looks like the 10% part of the deal is over. I was hoping to stack with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/488638. Oh well, I was getting greedy.

    • me too

  • well i still haven't opened my family q in black probably just going to return it, how does it work with a good guys ebay purchase?
