Really liked this book. The advice is basic but got my partner and I thinking about how to set up our joint accounts etc.

The only disappointing section for me was the 'How to double your income', which was nothing more than 'Don't quit your day job whilst finding a better paying one'.

  • If i read this book will i be stopped buying unnecessary stuff at bargain price which are published on Oz bargain?

    • No but you will set up a spare bank account for 'unforeseen expenses' a.k.a. Ozbargain impulse buys.

      • Haha.

Actually having separate accounts for everything is some of his most annoying advice.

Many banks only allow one offset account. So having separate accounts is not helping financially because you're earning stuff all interest and losing your offset funds. Some lenders have multiple offsets (commbank?) but if you restrict getting a mortgage with only these lenders then you're probably paying a higher interest rate on your mortgage.

The real solution is learn to budget. If you totally suck then you can take his advice and yes it comes at a cost.

What I did to curb my spending was any $ I spent on non-essentials I had to put the same amount on my mortgage. I excluded 'going out' expenses as I didn't want to have less fun in life, but all toys and ozb crap etc was dollar-for-dollar.

      • You will probably set up 25 spare bank accounts with silly names

  • I'm still waiting for the dumbed down version, for dummies. Probably in a free Udemy video format that I would collect but ignore. I'm guessing the first step would be to have a secure form of income…

  • I never understood why he call himself "barefoot"

I find it disgusting when I see people walking around in barefoot in public places.

He doesn't like to wear shoes.

    • Is pyjamas ok in public ?

Probably aiming for the growing foot fetish demographics (Quentin Tarantino types)

  • Alternatively, you could go for the book depository deal with a similar price but delivered.

I'll save you $9.50 hundreds of pages of reading.

Pay off credit cards first. Then your mortgage, then start thinking about investing in passive index share funds.

    Thank me later.

Bit more to it than that.

      Plus already been said.

You prob need to read it if you think that's all it's about.

I don't agree with everything he says but he has some good points.
He should update the book to talk about jumping between credit cards to get frequent flyer points ;)

Excuse my ignorance, but is this like the 21st Century "Rich Dad, Poor Dad"?

It is but a better read IMHO

It still surprises me how many Australian adults don't have a clue about structuring their money.

comments like 'my pay just came in but its all going towards bills this week' is a prime example, and i (profanity) hear this everywhere. if you structured your money properly you wouldn't ever need to be shocked about the timing of bills.

don't get me wrong im a very poor saver and spend money on shit, but at least i make sure every re-occurring bill like (gas/elect/water,insurance,phone,internet,rego,petrol,netflix,spotify etc) gets paid the right amount each fortnight to have it fully paid off once the bill comes through.

Fair go mate, struth! Those bevvies at the local aren’t going to pay for themselves!

    • Yep. Living expenses first, then luxuries. Not the other way around.

    • I see and hear it everyday. "My daughter's birthday tomorrow, so I need the money to buy her a present". It's a very bleak future indeed.

  • I was issued a refund just now… the book is not available for pick up at Big W QV Melbourne.

  • Recently read the 2018 version, does he still recommend Hostplus for super in the 2019 version?

  • Can I price match this in store? (Digideals seems to be online only)

  • Thank you!

  • LOL - just saved myself $9.50 by borrowing it from my local library

    • Only problem is it's always out on loan at my local library. And it cost $$$ to put a hold on it. So I guess I'm saving $$$ by not reading it??

  • Does anything actually change in each years edition? I borrowed an older one off a friend a while back.

  • I’ve been meaning to read this book. Perhaps most of his riches are from the sale of this book!!!

  • This is available on Amazon for $9.50 with free delivery for Prime members:
