NVIDIA Shield TV with Controller (+$30 Netflix e-Gift Card) $247.20 + Delivery ($0 with eBay Plus) @ Futu Online eBay

1140
PATRON20

Greetings everyone, Futu have just listed this bundle on their eBay store, seems like an awesome price for this box when factoring in the additional $30 Netflix gift card which comes with it :)

Could sell the controller and Netflix voucher to make this a cheap standalone console, especially when factoring in using discounted gift cards also.

As always, enjoy :)

  • Does the Shield support IR remotes like the Harmony 650?
This must have been asked a hundred times, apologies.

  • +3

Might be chucking in the Netflix gift card to clear old stock?

New model will be out in time for Christmas IIRC

  • How does the Shield compare to something like a PS4 or Xbox1 when using it as a PLEX client? Are there any other benefits to using the Shield instead of a console? I've been tempted to pickup a Shield for a while now but am not sure if it's worth it when I already have a PS4.

    • +2

Not sure about Xbox, but PS4 Plex does not support direct play of some (all?) files (therefore requires server side transcoding). I also don't believe it supports Dolby Atmos playback yet, and only 4k playback with the new "V2 Beta" version of the app I believe.

The Shield apparently does all of the above natively.

    • +2

I have a PS4 Pro and a Shield. Reason for the Shield was 4K HDR and Atmos. Couldn't do that with the PS4 Pro.

    • +7

The shield is as good as it gets. Plays everything, it can actually act as a Plex server as well as client, the hardware NVIDIA puts in there is extraordinary at handling media

      • Apple TV 4K with new Plex player says otherwise. The Apple TV 4K specs are a beast.

    • Shield is on of/is the best players out.

  • -5

It's actually just better to buy an Xbox One S 500GB for $200 if you're wanting a media streaming device.

    • +3

I have one and it doesn’t do plex atmos properly whilst this does

  • Somewhat unrelated, but say this was running Plex. Can I just control Plex with a WiFi remote on my phone?
Right now I only have to use my phone - IR blaster to switch on the TV and Yatse to control Kodi.

    • Don't know about that, but wanting to use my AVR remote with it, considering to get a FLIRC.
      ASIN B01NBRBWS6

    • +2

I believe it has chromecast capabilities so you should be able to use the plex app and no IR blaster needed.

      • +2

Nvidia has a remote app which I use to control everything including Plex

        • I will need to check this out, cheers

    • I was using Plex on my Shield the other day using the Android TV app on my phone, was very simple.

  • I have an Apple TV and Xbox X, tell me why I need this? Curious genuinely because it keeps popping up.

    • +7

      You don't.

      • +1

I have the ATV4k + XBOX1X and the Pro - main usage for Shield is PMS and Plex and also due to that if I have to play Netflix ( or any other app) I wouldn’t need to really switch to another device so it’s all in one. I use ATV mainly for all iTunes stuff. Shield also has Kodi which ATV doesn’t have. But if you don’t need all the above then it may not be for you. Shield is the best and most expensive device out there and ymmv with other cheaper options.

There are a few things that neither the Apple TV or Xbox have:

      • No / limited audio passthrough (no passthrough on the Apple TV; Xbox can use passthrough for just the bluray app and Netflix from memory)
      • No Plex server
      • No system-wide auto refresh rate switching
      • No inbuilt ChromeCast
      • No support for Widevine DRM within Kodi - even though the Xbox has Kodi (Apple TV doesn't), you can't use Widevine DRM add-ons like Matt Huismans add-ons for Foxtel Go, Foxtel Now, Optus Sport, bein Sport etc:

  • does this have kayo?

    • +2

Yep you can install Kayo on it.

      • +2

And also the Kodi kayo add-on which many prefer.

        • +1

Any reason why people prefer it over the native app? I use the foxtel go Kodi addon

          • +1

@SuperC: Love to know the answer to this too

          • +5

@SuperC: The Kayo add-on for Kodi gives you:

            • EPG
            • Resume Play function for on demand content
            • Better playback controls
            • @kirt: Ah awesome, don't currently use Kayo as Foxtel gave me a decent deal, but will def look into this. Thanks for the insight.

              • +1

@SuperC: No probs, and one other thing, the add-on has search.

            • @kirt: Forgive my ignorance, but is EPG?

              • +2

@ONEMariachi: Electronic Program Guide - looks similar to this:

                https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/attachments/imag0130-jpg.6330…

                • @kirt: EPG is the one thing I wish Kayo had, so I want to use this now. Stupid question - I have Kodi on my Shield but how do I install the Kayo add-on?

                  • +2

@sav11: Go here to install add-on:

                    https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/03/kayo-sports-kodi-add-on.h…

…then here to install IPTV Merge (which will give you the EPG):

                    https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/02/iptv-merge-kodi-add-on.ht…

Worth checking out some of Matts other add-ons too, like Foxtel Go, Foxtel Now, Optus Sport, Freeview etc:

                    https://www.matthuisman.nz/

                    • @kirt: Do you need subs?

                      • @dasher86: Yeah you need to be a paying subscriber of the service to use these.

                    • @kirt: Thanks Kirt , appreciate your help. I'm missing something though. I've installed them and in IPTV Merge I went to Add EPG > Add-on > Kayo Sports. It installed but I still don't know how/where I can see the EPG. Have I missed a step?

                      • @sav11: Make sure in your skin settings that the TV category is enabled under Main Menu Items, then go back to the Kodi Home screen, highlight TV, then select Guide.

                        • @kirt: When I highlight TV and select Guide it opens but is empty, no data there. I guess I did something wrong when I installed it.

                          • @sav11: Did you add Kayo to both the Playlist and EPG sources, then force a merge?

Maybe run through the steps here again:

                            https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/02/iptv-merge-kodi-add-on.ht…

                            • @kirt: Yep that was it, working now, thanks heaps mate!

                              • @sav11: Happy days :)

                                • +1

                                  @kirt: Happy days indeed!

I also installed it on my laptop and his IPTV AU add-on with EPG too. Will be useful when I travel in a few days, to have Kayo and FTA channels in one EPG/interface and also as an option in case Plex PVR has any problems. Good timing.

And not having an EPG for Kayo has been annoying til now.

Thanks again for your help, you're a champion :)

  • For a Plex server is it half decent? I'm looking to retire my old laptop as its struggling with 4k stuff.

    • +3

Works really well as a PMS

      • Cheers, I was looking at a NUC but for slightly less I can just get one of these and honestly I won't use it for anything except a server.

        • That’s what I thought while starting off a few years back but now it’s my most used device for all things streaming!

    • +1

Not sure about 4k but it supposedly transcodes 4-5 1080p streams simultaneously.

  • +1

How much better is this than Raspberry Pi 4 for Kodi? Based on some of the above comments I'm assuming a lot… The RPi4 is over $100 when you factor in power supply and SD card etc, so this seams more than 2.5 times better.

    • +11

Sadly, it's only 2.472 times better. Not a great deal.

  • +4

I've had this sucker for about 4 years now, and it's never missed a beat. Brilliant at doing all the things. And some of the games are ok too.
If this thing failed, I would not hesitate to get another.

  • Does anyone know if the Nvdia shield controllers work with Apple TV?

    • They will not.

  • Appreciate this query may have been answered elsewhere, so apologies in advance if that is the case: When operating a Shield as a Plex Media Server, is the Shield able to access files on shared locations on the LAN network, or do the files have to be stored locally (i.e., on the Shield) / on a directly attached drive?

  • I use SPMC (a fork of Plex) with my Shield to play mkvs from a USB drive, and am very happy with the results. Just a hint: if you want 5.1 sound and are using a Toslink optical cable to send audio to an old pre 4k amplifier, select bitstream rather than PCM for the audio; you need to send compressed audio to the amplifier using DVD era codec like DTS and AC-3, rather than having the Shield decode the audio before forwarding to the TV and then the amp.

  • +1

How good will Shield be for streaming games from my PC to TV? I have a 2070 Super/3700x desktop. Everything is running on Ethernet.

  • Can anyone please share any tips how to install apps from other regions? Specifically I am wanting to install Vudu

  • Has anyone got the netflix code?

    • Not yet, I was going to contact them next week if its not here by then. Listing says 2-4 weeks for code to be sent.

      • I got mine today, but it was in the spam mailbox. I use Gmail.

  • +1

This deal is available again with the new code PATRON20.

  • Can you side load apk into Shield just like other android boxes?

  • Still available as I just ordered one. Ends 29/10 now.
