  • Good price. I've been meaning to give 5w40 a shot for summer. But to be honest I still have about 15L of 5w30 from 2 years ago when it was $27. I almost loaded up on the semisyn 5w30 for $15 as well lol but figured the cost of shorter services was a pain in the butt.

  • Anyone know if I can use 5w40 Instead of 5w30? my mechanic uses 5w30 for an oil change. It’s a 2016 outlander with 50000kms.

Beat me to the post! Here's a write up I was going to submit

As a car enthusiast, I reccomend changing your oil every 5,000-7,500kms for a car you care about. As an ozbargainer I would stretch it to 10,000kms for a lightly driven daily commuter.

Please only use this if it's compatible with your vehicle or if you have used it before.
    Castrol Vehicle compatibility checker(datateck.com.au)
Also note the capacity required for your engine on the page to see if 5 Litres is enough for your car.
(i.e. My car shows: Service Refill Capacity: 5.1* Litres | * - including oil filter) Your typical oil filter holds about 300ml, so you can deduct that rough amount if you aren't changing it.

When should you change your oil filter?
Depends on the car and how much you want to save. I personally reccomend changing it every oil change (especially if you have a performance car or like some spirited driving). That being said if it's just for your daily commuter you could get away with changing it every other oil change.

I personally haven't had any issues receiving my last 2 orders of oils from them (Melb based), but apparently some people have been having issues getting their orders from Sparesbox and had to contact them?

    • Mixed reviews, some orders are quick (within a week) if in stock, otherwise be prepared to wait a month or so.

    • I do mine every 6 months which works out to be about 6000kms. Used to use 5w40 for winter and 10w40 for summer but my mechanic reckons since my engine is entering old age, 10w40 all year would be better for it.

Sparesbox have stopped selling the Mann oil filters I've been using for years. Now it's an overpriced Ryco or an unknown Wesfil

      • @tdw
Using 10w40 all year round for an older car checks out.

I've used Wesfil filters for a while and they're honestly great filters. My mechanic only stocks them, and has cut open the Wesfil filters to check the quality of the filter membranes and said they're better than most filters (including k&n).

        • ok good to know.
i'll give them a go when i next do a bulk order of filters.

yeah, k&n is not just overpriced, it's trash lol.

That doesn't make sense. Viscosity at operating temp is going to be the same for both oils . So if you want a higher viscosity oil due to an older engine you want to increase the second number not the first….

The only reason you'd go for 10w40 in winter is because the stuff is cheaper and you don't need the cold startup properties because it's warmer.

Oil change every 5000-7500km? If your using full synthetic oil, you are truly wasting your money changing that often….

      • -2

Some cars are prone to sludging and need to have more frequent oil changes. Every 3 - 4k kms for old camry 1mzfe v6 engines, especially if the last person did not do the maintenance or only did small trips.

      • I've found it can mean the dirrence of a clean drain versus it being black.

      • Yep might as well be using conventional if you're changing it that often.

It really depends on how the car is driven. Enthusiastically on the weekend with some track day/event visits? Sure, why not.

Daily driven and respected? You can definitely get away with just following the manufacturer's servicing schedule.

this is my exact thought, if you are going to change it that often you mine as well use the cheap conventional oil.

  • 152 clicks and out of stock:(

  • Why do people buy this? You do your own oil service?

      Makes a good moisturizer.

yes. if you are paying someone to change your oil you are being overcharged.

Lads, I just checked and I seem to have purchased the 3-box for $39.95 (before discount). The pricing error seems to have been temporary, as it's back up to $209.95.

Payments gone through, fingers crossed they'll honour it though.

Goodluck! I hope your order slips through :)

  • Wonder what's the production date?

    • not sure they ever print that on the bottle. would it even matter though? it's not like milk that goes off after a while.

      • I guess it shouldn't matter too much, though I have read that someone bought fully synthetic that was on sale, only to discover it was already 5 years old, yikes. It's only because I have a couple of other fully synthetics sitting around. My Shell Ultra and Penrite HPR5 both have production dates on the bottom.

explain "fully synthetic" and 100% synthetic.

Love the marketing people play on words to suck people in hey.

Got mine delivered yesterday. Got the new 6L containers instead of the old 5L ones. Nice!
