[NSW] AmEx Statement Credit: 30%/40% off Transport for NSW, up to $15/$20 Credit

2120

It's back, and with buses included this time, plus you get all the benefits! That's right, 30% off off-peak train trips! Assuming it works properly, that is (I've been charged full price when it was supposed to be half price once) …

Edit: You may even be lucky enough to receive the 40% off offer, which increases your credit limit to $20!

Most likely targeted as unlike the last Transport for NSW offer, my DJs Amex cards are eligible, but not my Velocity Escape cards, which were eligible last time.

Save offer to eligible Card and pay your fare by tapping your Card or Device on public transport on the the Opal network, when you travel by 15/11/2019 to receive 30% credit each time. Limited to 12,000 Cards and $15 per Card. Exclusions apply

  • You can use your Card, or a mobile wallet enabled device (“Device”), to make contactless payments on public transport on the Opal network. Contactless payments cannot be made on transport that accepts OpalPay.
  • To use your Device for payment, prior to travelling you must load the Card to which the offer is saved to one of the following mobile wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay
  • You must tap your Card or Device on an Opal reader at the beginning and end of each trip, and both taps must be made using the same Card or Device. If using a Device, you must use a Device which has been loaded with the Card to which the offer is saved. Failure to tap your Card or Device on an Opal reader at the end of a trip will incur a default fare, except when travelling on Sydney Ferries route F1.
  • If your Card or Device is not accepted for payment by the Opal reader you must tap on using another payment method (including, but not limited to, an Opal card or an Opal single trip ticket) in order to travel. Any such trips will not be eligible for the offer.
  • You will receive the same benefits of an Adult Opal card and pay an Adult fare when you tap on and tap off consistently with the same Card or Device. If using a Device, you must use the same Card on the same Device.
  • Offer is limited to a maximum of $15 credit per Card to which the offer is saved and only spend on this Card counts towards the Offer.
  • Excludes transactions where you do not spend directly with your Card to which the offer is saved by tapping your Card or Device on an Opal reader on public transport on the Opal network.
  • Excludes transactions made through a third party establishment or payment processor.
  • Credit is not redeemable for cash or other payment form.
  • Credit should appear on your billing statement within 5 business days from qualifying spend but may take up to 90 days from the offer end date.
  • Credit will not be applied to your Card Account if your Card has been suspended or cancelled.
  • Credit may be reversed if your qualifying purchase is refunded or cancelled.

    Targeted - I got 40% of $20

    • What? Why do I always get the worse offer 😭

      • It ms because you use public transport to much.

        • +4

I never use my Amex on public transport unless it's these offers though. I get more points if I continue to use my Opal card and top-up at Coles (especially when they have flybuys bonus points offers e.g. 4400 for a $100 spend) as my DJs Amex is three points per dollar at supermarkets and petrol stations (and other Wesfarmers/Woolworths stores like Kmart and Big W and weirdly, Starbucks)

          • @kerfuffle: May be silly question - aren’t opal top ups excluded from coles spend $ and earn flybuys offers?

            • +1

              @ozeone: Nope. Only at Woolies

              • @kerfuffle: Where do i find out which coles does top up for Opal? omg didnt know it works for their coles flybuy offer omg

                • @Serathis: There used to be a list and you could just type in Coles. Seems that no longer exists and have to search by address (Coles Five Dock doesn't offer Opal top-ups to help you out)

      • thanks for this OP

    • Yep. Me too!

    • Same. 40%

    • Me too…40% off upto $20 on both my cards… thanks op 😀

    • Woohoo got it too and going to the airport tomorrow and back too

      • I was JUST about to ask that same question…

off to the airport on Tuesday……

now it's simply just tapping on with the AMEX card ??

(pity I can't use it for the two of us travelling….)

        • Yes just tap your amex card on the reader when you get on / off.

        • You can. Seems the physical card and the same card on Google pay is seen as separate cards

    • I got 30% off on one card, and 40% off the other

      • Weird. What cards are they?

        • +1

I got 40% on my DJ Amex black & 30% on the free Qantas Amex.

          • +1

@vikvance: Whyyyyyyyy didn’t I get the 40% off is it because I spend too much on petrol? 😭

        • +1

40% on my free qantas amex, 30% off on my westpac altitude black.

  • This time its available on my supp cards

question is what's the easiest to ensure we capitalise on the '$15 / $20' and don't go over and beyond?

    • Keep a list.

    • Use a calculator to divide 15 by 0.3 or 20 by 0.4.

This'll tell you how much you need to spend to max out the reward.

    • I think there's no real difference between spending on Amex or Opal if there are no promotions like these, so to obtain max benefit from this deal you'd need to spend at least $50 from Amex.

However, your 8+ trip discount resets weekly, so it's better to just use your Amex card the whole week for the first week, then if you haven't spent enough to hit $50, use the Amex card again for all of the next week (so you get the 8+ trip discount). I assume you'd be over the $50 by the end of the second week.

This way you don't have to calculate anything, other than one check to see how you went at the end of the first week.

  • Cheers.

Got it on all 4 of my main & supplementary cards.

  • That's right, 30% off off-peak train trips!

this offer applies to peak rate too, right?

    • Obviously …

  • Cannot see offer on my ultimate card.

  • D u also get the same rates when transferring from train to bus on Opal within the same trip?
Or would amex treat this as seperate trips and charge for each mode of journey?
I know the TnC state same benefits as Opal has anyone tried and tested?

    • +1

The $2 discount for transferring modes should still apply. Try it out and let us know

      • +2

Doing it now ;) will report as soon as transaction is finalised in my account.

        • Would like to know this too as I wait for my bus to arrive 😁

  • I assume the opal recharge "tap on" would not count towards the offer?

    • Definitely not, but nice try. It won't even see the Opal reader when you add more money to your Opal card; it goes through EFTPOS

  • Got the 30%/$15 deal

  • -1

What is the best amex for around 50000 a year spending?

  • I have got the deal last time and again this time….

    • Lucky you. Mine keeps bouncing between my DJs Amex and my Velocity Escape Amex (if one didn't get it, the other would have and vice versa)

  • If it helps Amex now works on the Hills Busses

  • Not showing up on my Amex Explorer card. :(

    • I got the 40%/$20 on my Amex Explorer card. Hopefully you'll get it next time!

  • GOt 30/15 on main card. WIll check supps later hopefully I get a few and can spread it out :D

  • Got 40% off on both Velocity Plat cards
    $1.68 unlimited travel on Sundays!

  • -4

Thanks OP, saved the offer, but I drive anyway..

    • +2

Why would you take it then?

  • Thanks OP, got 40% off on my two cards!

  • I have 40% off on my DJs and Explorer

  • I have got 40% off Capped at $20. So can I Top Up may Opal now with $50 to maximise it or Top Ups are excluded?

    • Top-ups are excluded. You're supposed to use your Amex in lieu of your Opal card if you want to take advantage of this offer

      • Thank. So basically it would only cover one single transaction. Me going to city, Tap Apple Pay while boarding the bus and getting off in city normal fare for example $5 will get $2 refund. Is it all?

        • You can do multiple transactions/trips

          • @Pecan: How? If you bother to explain please.

            • +2

@nickskewl: Keep tapping on/off with the same card?
One trip today, another tomorrow etc.

              • @Pecan: so pretty much keep using the same card till I have maximised discount i.e. $20 cap.

      • +1

Just treat your AMEX as an OPAL card and you will get all benefits of the OPAL card and receive an additional 40% off from AMEX.

  • +2

Question : off to the airport… can I tap on with the card, and another person tap on with device (with Google Pay) linked to the same card ??

Quite liking these AMEX deals… used the Klook one this trip…. and the $450 on the QF flight.. and stocked up with Boozebud :)

    • Great question! Wondering about that too :)

    • considering that the card and device is treated as separate card, you should be able to do this.

    • +1

I tried doing that (Tap on with Apple Pay and Tap Off with the physical card) both are the same credit card, but got charged the full rate for not tapping off.

Works if the same method is used to tap on/off though.

    • You'll be charged full price on both. They have different unique IDs.

I think it might be to close the loophole where you can add the card to multiple Google/Apple Pay devices, and share it with your friends to reach the 8 trip discounts faster.

    • my original question was if had the AMEX card… travelling partner had a mobile, and the same card was on Google Pay for that mobile… then .. when we both tapped on.. then off .. whether it would have trouble with the transactions.

In any case - will use the discount for one person (me) - saves me at least $12 on the UTTERLY RIDICULOUS GATE FEE.

Further - might have to cease with the Opal - and use the Amex - there's the added points that you will get each week.

      • . whether it would have trouble with the transactions.

No trouble, both will be considered as a separate card.

  • Got 40% off in my AMEX main and supp card.

  • I just checked and I was charged incorrect fare on Friday when the services in Sydney CBD were affected. Just checked and the only way to claim is to fill a physical reimbursement form and post it to them and wait 20 business days. I don’t know how to react!

  • Wonder if anyone knows if tapping using AMEX cards are eligible for the 8 trips bonus during the week ?

    • +2

It's in the OP; you get all the benefits now … This happened at the end of July

  • There's no option to continue in that manual enrollment form?

    • It's not a manual enrolment. It just goes to the Amex website. It's a Targeted offer, so no manual link

  • Base on 40% and max $20, how much you need to spend to get max $20 then switch back to Opal Card.

Sorry can't think poor at maths

    Edit: I think its $50

But what's the best formula rather than thinking 40% of $100 is $40 then divide by 1/2

    • +4

      x * 40% = 20
move the 40% over to get x, when you move it across you do the opposite, so * turns into /
      so x = 20/40% = 20/0.4 = 50

      • Thank you sir. This reminds me the formulas….

  • Since applying the offer the opal readers no longer work with my card. Anyone else experienced this?

    • No; managed to catch the train fine yesterday with Google Pay.

  • +1

Anyone's fares look wrong after seeing their Amex statement?

    • Because they combine all the fares into one transaction. Mine says $10.30 because I took two peak hour trips at $5.15 each on Wednesday (waiting for the credit now)

    • they over charged me on thursday. damn

  • it is oddly good to see my return trip costing $1 °°°

    • +1

      It's not $1. That's a pre-authorisation.

Unless you were deliberately making a stupid comment …

      • how many pre-authorisation does it need? I've seen 3 pre-authorisation lines already ×°

        • You tapped on/off three times.

  • Has anyone gotten their credit yet? I'm still waiting to receive credit for trips I made on October 16 …

    • +2

      not yet!

    • +1

I haven't got mine yet either! I'm starting to get worried.

This is the first time Sydney buses has been in the promo and I've been using my AMEX for the last week.

Fingers crossed the credit comes soon!

    • +1

      Not for me either.

    • +1

Haven't seen it yet and I've reached the cap on one card. I do get the emails to say I activated the offer though whenever i tap on.
