Wearing Gucci isn't a good indicator of wealth.

Most Australians are poor. The nation had a median income of $44,000 in 2017.

The formerly lucky country has slowly been turned into an oligarchy by the Laberal Parties starting with Keating in the Hawke years. Since then wages have been dropping in real terms while accommodation and essential utilities have been privatised leading to increases of hundreds of percent.

God I wish the greens would get in and turn this shithole around.

      • -1

God I wish all the greens voters would get lined up next to the crew of Triple J and get shot.

        • +8

Looks like a few people didn't get my sarcasm in regards to dijis constant greens shilling. The greens monetary policy would have us all eating rationed organic potatoes and living in Soviet bloc units.

@brendanm: Damn, I fell for /s with my comment below.

Doesn’t matter. Felt good saying it haha.

Won't be that different from the liberal policy, then.

            • @outlander: Weird, no one I know is surging on potatoes and/it living in sovietesque apartments.

              • +1

@brendanm: We get closer every day. Once everything has been privatised, the raiding of the public purse complete, and half the population jobless, potatoes and having your own apartment will be something people dream of.

        • +3

Don't you enjoy having lefty politics and inclusion shoved down your throat? That's a bit weird.

      • +1

The problem is the Greens won't fix it, the best Green in NSW died, his successor is alright, but the party is a mishmash of NIMBY concerns, New Wave Left bumble and some decent IR

      • +2

The Green’s fill a niche political vacuum to voice ideas that don’t fly with the major parties…. in that sense they are useful to wider political discourse…

But if you think for a second the erroneous I deology that underpins their policies is useful beyond being a minor party (one example being the assumption that Australia is a shithole) is not only historically and globally naïve…. but incredibly myopic.

        • The Green’s fill a niche political vacuum to voice ideas that don’t fly with the major parties…

          True

in that sense they are useful to wider political discourse…

          Not quite sure because…

the erroneous I deology that underpins their policies…

Too ridiculous to be of any use… Similar to posts asking for $20k car budget and people offering ideas of buying a Ferrari.

The nation had a median income of $44,000 in 2017.

So would that make us fifth, behind Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland and the United States?

      Median Income By Country 2019

Yes, but people in Australia think they are very hard done by. People need to travel (a luxury we can do) and go to Fiji, South east Asia or London. You don't know what poor is until you go over there. Glad I went to Thailand. It's taught me so many people work much harder than I do for much less. It also taught me that money isn't everything. Poor people in Thailand seemed happier than most middle class I know here.

        • +8

Nothing truer said. A lot of people in Australia have zero perspective.

          • +3

@HighAndDry: Amen… I see here and smell it every day and then come here a read more ignorant shit

    • +23

Who upvotes this stuff? Have any of you looked at the rest of the world? We have potable water from the tap. Free medical services. Subsidised everything if you're poor. Some of the best weather on the planet year round. Population density other countries would and literally have killed for. A sociopolitical system that's absolutely top tier even among liberal democracies. And all this without the stifling homogeneity that characterise a lot of the Nordic countries which might be said to be better.

      FFS.

Get out of the basement sometime.

      • +9

        We don't have basements.

      • +3

To be fair our population density is slightly skewed due to a large amount of uninhabitable area.

      • +1

Charities pick up a lot of the slack and they are (profanity) hopeless in themselves, massive tax writeoff

    • It's a BS stat as factors in all casuals, part timers etc. Most of which work those jobs by choice due to prioritising study, family, setting up for the future etc.

    • +2

Knew this was a diji comment as soon as I read "oligarchy"

      • +1

This I did not know, but seems truer now than when originated back in the 60's.

Poor…. because of a 44k median….. this is crazy talk. Don’t listen to this guy.

I wear uniquo, shop on aliexpress

    • -2

I remember wearing Uniqlo. Now I wear gucci

      Haha.

      • congratulations! Plenty of gucci on aliexpress, i might upgrade for next season

        • -2

          thanks.

          haha.

          • +2

@waterbottled: are you 12 years old, or just searching for validation and a reason to feel better?

comparison is the death of joy. Feel good about what you naturally enjoy or have a skill at, no matter how simple.

Gucci is made by Chinese people living in Prato, or Chinese people living in China. Theyre highly skilled producers of garments, earning very little compared to the tax-evading owners

      • i don't remember wearing Uniqlo because I've only ever worn gucci haha ha

        Haha.

    I'm a temporarily embarrassed millionaire

    • I'll inherit 2 properties worth over a million and I am yet to see how a millionaire is something special. A couple of less things to worry about, but also more to lose.

      • +9

Poor you. I’ll take one of your hands to save you the anxiety

        • I’ll take one of your hands to save you the anxiety

How would amputating one of his hands help reduce his anxiety?🤨

      • +1

Just waiting around for people to die rather than doing it yourself? I'll take the one wololo wombat doesn't want and you will be stress free. I could probably build you a granny flat to live in if you liked.

        • So now he's a bilateral wrist amputee?🤣

Fake it till you make it.

    • +1

It's more like fake it till you have a mental breakdown

I have a mate who used to joke about how girls called him "ugly" until they found out how much money he made…Then they also started to call him "poor".🤣

5 years later, he's happily married to a Megan Gale-look-alike, owns a nice house and is expecting his first child any day now. Some women like an underdog.

Edit: To answer your question , I'm doing ok. I don't want more but neither do I want less. In today's world, money is like oxygen - a lack of oxygen can kill you but then so can too much of it.

    • +2

To answer your question , I'm doing ok. I don't want more but neither do I want less

I think the most healthy perspective. To be content with what you have.

Women who want children want providers, and there's a lot of men who are not up to it. I am glad your friend is happy and best of luck to him and his partner for the birth and beyond, its life changing and full of responsibility

      • +1

Women are always saying they want a good man, not a jerk and how a sense of humour is sexy. I guess some actually mean it.

I have a hobby farm. My $/acresqm is a lot less.

          • @[Deactivated]: I'm always surprised at how much land you can get for the money the further you go from the CBD. We recently spent a weekend at a colleague's hobby farm in Shoreham and it was quite idyllic.

            • @[Deactivated]: Nice spot there. Still a pretty penny if it has a decent sea view.

              • @[Deactivated]: Is it? He dresses like a pauper and lives very modestly. He even asked us if we had any baby clothes that my youngest had grown out of for his kid. Must be an ozbargainer then :)

Am rich/poor… paying off Sydney mortgage :/

    • +1

Then your own your way to home ownership (congrats on that), and your wealth is determined by a housing bubble. I think your rich, if in many years, you can pay off your house, retire and still go out and enjoy yourself. Many lack this and many have more, but we have it alright in Australia

      • +1

Older generations had strong IR policies, they've been negotiated away, its amazing the banks are still lending away as they are when theres almost no guarantee people can pay their mortgages for say 30 years

      • +3

For someone who supposedly has $2m in assets, and attended school with the richest young men in Sydney, your spelling and grammar is absolutely atrocious. And don’t try and pull a dyslexic card, poor spelling and grammar and dyslexia are not the same thing.

    • +3

Asset rich, cash poor. Honestly not a bad position to be in unless you're running a business. Forces you to save, basically.

  • +2

This is too loaded of a question - i'd wager 95% can live comfortably if they live within their wage.

I dont earn a boat load, but I choose to live far out south west, buy half price woolies items, buy cheaap Xioami products, and can still afford a small (domestic) holiday each year while saving a house deposit. If you're single making $150k+ a year, you can afford better luxuries, but ultimately you're still doing the same things. Living somewhere, buying grocceries, buying (more expensive) electronic produccts, and taking longer international holidays.

At the end of the day, you make the most of what you have, and surround yourself with people who make you happy. Living a happy life is the correct way to live a rich life.

    • +3

This is interesting but you probably aren't earning 40k annually, partner on under 10k, paying most of your money in rent. And tbh its hard to surround yourself with people who make you happy when most people are in the same boat. The recession is coming, the question is when

      • And thats why I said 95%. For couples earning under $50k combined, I do feel sorry for you. Make sure you are taking advantage of any welfare you can get and I hope there is a path forward to a more livable income for you.

I imagine if your partner is earning less than 10k, this is because of some disadvantage - full time student, disabled, mental issue, etc. Nothing to be ashamed of, but the government can help out financially in those situations. My sister is able to live comfortably despite her severe depression and anxiety that sometimes cripples her from leaving the house.

        • +1

Under 50k combined as a couple can mean one person studying full time and the other working full time. You don’t qualify for welfare and now they get to pay HECS and live out of home. I’ve been there many years ago, it’s not comfortable, it’s not easy. Clearly you have enjoyed the privilege of not having to struggle to get by.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: You're still eligible for AbStudy/Austudy with a combined income of less than $51k.

Not once have i said it was easy, in fact I said it was hard and I feel sympathy for you.

And as far as my personal circumstances go (which i dont see how they matter since I've shown nothing but support and sympathy) I completed a double degree in 4 years while working full time since I did not have the 'privilege' to do otherwise. I think you should refrain from making sweeping assumptions.

  • +1

    Fully loaded….

  • +1

Poor, no job and not on welfare. No one wants to hire me

    • +2

I know a mate who refuses to get welfare and is out of work for over 6 months. Hang in there, opportunities will come if you stay positive.

    • +3

Get on welfare, retrain in a field that won't cost you an arm and a leg, or go to uni and rack up a debt you'll never have to pay back. Seriously, get everything you can done, including dental. You deserve it, the job market is tough and you need to look after yourself and think positively. Those so called 'job seeker experts' are the biggest leeches on the system, useless as dogshit, when they find out you have a job they try to claim it as a KPI haha

    • +2

Because of your tiny little arms?

    • -1

Maybe u should wear gucci to ur next interview that will help

      • +1

no one gives a crap about your gucci and it sure wont help in the interview

        • haha maybe haha.

        • Dude.. your comment? Not very gucci.

  • +1

I'm okay i think. Living like a monk since my first job so was able to buy some properties before the property market went nuts. Can never live paycheck to paycheck like what most people around me are doing. It's insane.

    • -2

U r lucky, gucci is a luxury tho

      • +2

dude you keep mentioning Gucci. if you think Gucci is expensive or luxurious.., you have a lot to learn. my guess is Shenzhen Gucci and not Italian Gucci.

        • -1

yeah haha i own gucci but still ride the bus so not rich yet.

          haha.

  • +19

I am rich because I have a job, live under a roof, get to eat twice a day, and have seasonal clothes to wear… PLUS on top of this, I have access to Internet, I have a car, a mobile phone, electricity, get to shower with hot water, have great wife, friends + family :D… my life is fkn awesome and full of luxury! I couldn't ask for more :))))

    • -4

      When is gucci season

      Haha.

  • +3

Rich Compared to starving kids in africa

Poor compared to people who own a property (without a loan) - esp if they have a place in sydney or Melbourne

Ok compared to those who are renting or have a home loan

    • +2

So where do you live? With your parents?

    • -1

Wat about regular kids in Africa

      Who have gucci

  • +1

Definitely not rich, unless compared to the developing world. Definitely not poor, we pay the bills and the mortgage and enough to buy presents for the kids. We don't spend a lot on discretionary items for ourselves though after the rest is all sorted, but feel very lucky we can afford what we have. I look at the super rich and feel bored anyway, it all just seems like window dressing to me.

    • -5

You should own at least one piece of gucci tho

  • +1

    WTF is a Gucci?

    • +5

I think its type of viral rash.

    • -1

      Gucci to spicci 4 u

  • +1

If I were rich, or even doing okay, i probably wouldn't care so much about bargains. Wouldn't consider drinking a 24 cans of whatever "grass jelly" is just to save a few bucks on my daily calorie intake.

    • -1

Are you saving up for gucci

  • +2

Rich, as I’ve have my all body parts working as expected.

  • +2

I have an average Aussie income, so I’m incredibly rich.

      • +1

Lol the other one, they do the same shit thanks to the good for nothing SDA

  • +4

Rich. I have $10 to spend but I have the myMaccas app, HJ shake and win , 7/11 fuel app offers and HJ vouchers to stretch it out.

    • You should wear ur gucci to maccas hj and 711

  • +3

I am always poor but transiently got rich by repeatedly fleecing jbhifi of $500 GCs and phones. Does that count?

Now I am morally bankrupt though :(
