The reviews seem pretty average on this model though …

To be fair that review is based on it being literally double this price. If it was $400 then I bet they'd be more positive.

Decent price compared to b&m stores but in this day and age your smart phone is going to have pretty similar performance. I suppose this has a large zoom capacity but in my experience, results are less than ideal if you're in anything but good light.

Not sure why you are being downvoted. The sensor on this one is in smartphone territory so how do you expect it beats current generation smartphone in point and shoot image quality. It does have better lens but that's about it. 1/2.3 inch sensor, duh. For comparison Mate 30 Pro main camera is 1/1.54 inch, bigger even.

Because your smart phone can't do 840mm. You can't compare the two products.

These super zoom compacts still have a role. If you need the reach.

Not everyone has or wants a high end phone. Here you're paying to get manual controls, a viewfinder and extreme zoom.

I don't want one but there's a small market for this kind of camera.

Yes and that market is shrinking year by year. You don't need a high-end phone to get that kind of camera sensor size. A typical 48MP Smartphone Camera sensor is 1/2 inch and that's on phones as low as $200. The reason why people want these compact ones are for point and shoot and not much reason for them in this age, hence why the market keep shrinking.

    • I have a coolpix with 20x zoom. It's two models below this. When I was travelling through theme parks where you can be very far away from what you're looking at, I was able to get impressive photos and videos on stages and parades using it, that would never be achievable by a phone. They would be blurry at the very least. IT's only Full HD so I remain on the lookout to get a good compact with fantastic zoom. I have a high end smart phone, it just can't do what a dedicated camera can.
