He's so cute! Like having your own Wall-E (except he doesn't compact trash)

Note:

While Anki has ceased product development and manufacturing, Anki has stated that it will provide long term support to maintain the operation and functionality in the existing products and apps. A self-serve Help Center to assist in getting the most out of your product has been implemented by Anki. Regretfully there are no agents available but Anki has indicated that they will be monitoring cloud operations for Anki accounts and Vector.

Available at Amazon AU but works out more expensive for some reason - $168.01 shipped

Vector Robot by Anki - US $105.56 Shipped

Is this the Wifi version or the Bluetooth version?

The W-Anki has a much bigger range.

    • +3

      Sigh
      I'll answer anyway

      It's 2.4GHz wifi and bluetooth

      • Thanks…

        • Are you going to buy one?

          • @Sage: Only if it can make me a good coffee…

    • Wanki?

  • what he do??

    • Watch the video in the listing (top video)

He's like an Alexa with a screen and a personality. Would imagine he'd be a great thing to have with kids, rather than a Google Home or Alexa

  • Didn't Vector go broke?

Don't see the point of this if they're only gonna pull the plug on his functionality down the line.

    • +5

      Didn't Vector go broke?

Yes, it got bought out by Scalar.

It appears they lost their direction…

      • +3

Don't go off on a tangent please jv

        • +2

Why? Is it making you Tensor?

          • +3

@jv: Getting easy to draw parallels between you and other trolls

            • +5

@spackbace: I see the direction you're going with this, and forced to add to this array. The magnitude and lengths you two go to, why can't you just get along-itude? Maybe you two just need some space apart.

      • +1

Hahah they so didn't. Good dad joke nonetheless

  • By my math is closer to AU$155. (also is slightly lower at US$104.46 delivered now)

If you have Prime should be about the same to buy from Amazon AU Global store, $154.56 as delivery should be free.

While I could say I'd be worried about buying something that relies on the cloud and has already wound up, I'm guessing might be bored of it before Anki pulls the plug on the remaining services anyway.

    • Nope, same delivered price here:

      Items: USD 86.49
      Shipping & handling: USD 9.47
      Total before tax: USD 95.96
Estimated tax to be collected: USD 9.60
      Order total: USD 105.56

      • +1

Weird, item price different for me

        Items: $85.49
        Shipping & handling: $9.47
        Total before tax: $94.96
Estimated tax to be collected: $9.50
        Order total: $104.46

        • Ah yep you're right, my in-cart price didn't auto-update :/

    • Sounds like it might be ripe for somebody to hack it, if that's your sort of thing.

If they're not going to continue (or sell) the technology, then it would be cool if they released any source code.

      • +4

People have been trying to hack it. Unfortunately it validates the signature of any firmware update before trying to install it. Given it is essentially a mic, camera and speaker designed to live in a kids room, I'm happy they've done a good job on securing the device. As an engineer, I'm disappointed they haven't turned it over to the community. They're still hoping to sell the IP at some point in the future.

  • +2

They are going to kill all functionality of these very soon, it almost seems wrong that Amazon have these for sale without a disclosure saying that this will be a paper weight in a few months

    • -4

Why would Amazon or any other seller have to disclose that? No-one knows how long the service will stay running or if it will be sold or if someone takes over the running of the servers

Your can't say that they are going to kill off the functionally very soon or a few months from now as you don't know.

The price has been discounted heavily and there is plenty of discussion about what is happening if you go to their website or Google them.

  • Want this! But at the risk of becoming a non-responsive robot if Anki stops paying their cloud service, I will sleep on it and see if I still want it tomorrow.

  • This is very dependent on an app to work properly. If the current app doesn’t work on future versions of iOS, then you are stuck. This happened to me with another toy that relied on an app when the company stopped supporting it.

    • This is not dependant on the app. It’s sibling Cozmo is the one dependent on the app.

  • Is this the same Anki as the near $500 one I saw at JB HiFi or is it just a black cased version of the cheaper one?

    • +1
      • H, I never thought it was worth that much. $160 is much more palatable. But those reviews… ouch.

        • Reviews @ $400 would likely have different expectations to reviewers @ $160

Tbh it looks like a glorified Alexa device, which is worth about this much. $400 is just because of the R&D that went into it. Like a lot of the Anki stuff

  • If anyone is still keen on one of these, looks like 3rd party sellers (fullfilled by Amazon) are starting to dump their stock at US$80 so down to ~AU$145 delivered. I suspect it will keep dropping though (28 Degrees price protection bound to get used on this one if you have it..)
