    This is why I don't buy Nintendo stuff - the pricing is just ridiculous. Breath of the Wild came out in 2017 for crying out loud, yet $63 is still considered a "deal" for it, and that doesn't even include the expansion pass. Compare that to, say, Horizon Zero Dawn which came out about a month before BotW and is currently under $25 (including the expansion) on PS Store, and that's not even on sale. An XBox game from Microsoft would likely be a similar price, but that's a moot point because it would be on GamePass anyway.

          The point is that games like BotW and Mario Kart 8 are still selling very very well. Whereas Horizon sales numbers are low right now, so they need to decrease price. Many Nintendo games are known as 'evergreen' titles, they sell well throughout the consoles life.

              @Exorcist: To be fair, HZD gameplay was meh once you get past the fighting against machine animal aspects. It's pretty much a Far Cry game.

              BotW on the other hand runs on a completely different engine, the climbing mechanics is completely different from an AC game (unlike HZD), elements interact with environment (e.g. burning grass which leads to updraft).

              I enjoyed HZD story, but the gameplay can be found anywhere else in most open world games. Nintendo games tend to be "evergreen" because they run on their own game engine, they don't feel like clones of another game. That's why playing Wind Waker or Super Mario Sunshine is still such a joy, while they are not graphically amazing at their time, they make up for it with art style and their own special spin, their own engine.

            Where did you get your logic from? That's completely false. Sony can just cut production and prices will go up again. Nintendo can ramp up production and prices will drop. It's completely artificial.

            Exact same scenario as when the Nintendo mini came out on a limited release. Every scalper bought them up and re-sold them for more $$$. It was completely artificial pricing. You know what happened afterwards? Nintendo came back later and released more units, and the prices came back down.

            Nintendo are 100% to blame on pricing, just like Apple are 100% blame on their expensive iphones which are several generations out of date.

                I do, however, agree that it would be quite nice if they'd drop prices after a couple of years simply to allow more people to play their games. People who can't afford their top end prices now may be able to in future, and I'm always of the opinion that more people getting their hands on an entertainment product is better in the long run.

              @Blitzfx: The flaw in your logic is that Nintendos prices are high despite production being high. MK8 is a remake, and it has sold over 19 million copies… Its still selling over 1 million a quarter even 2.5 years after release. Compare it to Horizon ZD, which also sold very well, having 7.6 million sales in its first year and 2.4 million in its second. So MK8D has far more sales at a much higher average price since HZD has been at <$30 for over a year now.

                @scuderiarmani: I think everyone in this thread needs to read about Japanese companies and cartel markets.

                They've been caught many times doing it from Freight companies to Car manufacturing to pharmaceuticals and several other industries.

                In 2002 Nintendo was fined €149m for price fixing which prevented millions of consumers from purchasing games at cheaper prices.
                This cartel continues still to this day.

                The distributors caught were fined a total of €12 million. Nintendo basically said 'we knew we didn't comply and factored an event of this into our budget' meaning the consumers were paying for this all along, Nintendo paid nothing.

                Something to do with the Japanese and how they do business.

                This is why consumers are being ripped off and tbh, it's highly illegal in Australia. It hurts consumers, forces them to pay more tax and reduces confidence in sectors of the market which ultimately hurts economic growth and innovation within those products. It's collusive behaviour which forces prices to be artificially high. Gamers have the right to purchase games at the cheapest price the market can possibly offer.

                    Apple doesn't have a cartel. It's clear as day to see that. The iPhone 11 has been out a short time and has been on sale from $1699 to $1199 at several places. Same with airpod Pros. Merchants are striving to offer the best possible price the market can offer.

                      Mario Kart dominates sales charts 3 years after release, like many other Nintendo first party titles. That means they don't need to drop the RRP. Do any of you have basic business knowledge?

                      Nintendo is offering direct discounts on titles that sell regardless. Apple wasn't, other sellers were.

                        They also cannot price fix a market. Competitors are meant to be exactly that, competitors not working together to fix a market. That wouldn't be a market, nor is it trading fairly.

      I guess the question becomes why should something go down in price over time? I doubt manufacturing costs have changed materially for software so if it did fall in price, it would be to capture the rest of the market who weren’t willing to pay full price… which in Nintendo’s case, clearly isn’t an issue given their titles consistently rank near the top of the charts even years after release.

      Kudos to them for not making it a race to the bottom. Not to say I want to pay more for things but I feel their business model for their first party Switch titles being maintained at higher prices helps keep it sustainable and without resorting to loot boxes/micro transactions/etc. Pity about their mobile games though.

        Nintendo's lack of price depreciation has made me reconsider how I buy games. I used wait a couple of months and then buy once the price has dropped. I haven't bothered doing this with switch titles..

        Case in point is the launch of both Jedi Fallen Order & Pokemon last friday. I'm excited to play both, but only bought Pokemon at launch. I'll wait until EA drops the price for Fallen Order.

        It's great business for Nintendo, not so great for bargain hunters.

          You are often better with Nintendo at launch for first party, physically and digitally (pre order double gold coin offers).

          Definitely no point holding out for a Nintendo first party title, better off enjoying day 1, and if you must sell it, you'll have great re-sale.

        The video game sector was wildly profitable prior to 2014 and there was never any threat to "sustainability" by not having predatory monetisation practices that have been implemented since.

        Maybe your feelings came about because that's the bullshit message that the the sector's public relation firms dribble out: that there is no alternative to predatory monetisation or else "unsustainability".

          I don't have any hard facts to back it up so pure speculation but I thought video games have become so mainstream and "big" that it's become like a big budget Hollywood production to produce an AAA title which costs significantly more than what games used to cost to develop. But this is us digressing beyond the original point so I'll bring it back to the point of I appreciate that Nintendo has stability in their pricing and doesn't rely on short term monetisation strategies. The upshot of stable pricing is if you want the game, you just buy it - no point holding out for a cheaper price if it is unlikely to move much anyway.

      On the other hand, you can purchase it for $60 physically and then sell it for $55 easily once you are done with it.

      Good games should hold value, it makes complete sense and is no different to an Iphone holding value.

      You shouldn't limit yourself to not playing Nintendo due to this, BOTW is one of the greatest games I have ever played, an absolute masterpiece, buy physically and sell to get the experience, you already know it will hold value, if you are a collector then pick it up in 5 times when its down to $20.

      God of War on PS4 is $19 on Amazon and people loved that game and it was highly rated. People loved BoTW and it is highly rated yet it's still $79 or whatever in stores, but that's okay because Nintendo… There's some cognitive dissonance going on (i.e. games are so good they deserve to stay at launch price, yet it's clear that good games don't always stay at their launch price but with Nintendo they do — and people defend that? Okay…)

        If Sony could keep God of War at BOTW's price then they would, unfortunately for them it wouldn't sell.

        Nintendo on the other hand can do it and it sells, it's pretty simple.

        Nintendo games therefore hold value over Sony games, the market knows and their buying is adjusted towards it.

          Nintendo games sell because consumers have no choice. Nintendo is a price maker not a price taker. The market is forced to buy at that price, and they do.

          That's not the point either, the point is that their games are overpriced for how old they are — that is an objective fact. It's bizarre that people defend Nintendo and say their games are some sort of magic commodity that doesn't depreciate in value.

        I never claimed God of war was a good game. I wouldn't buy it for 1$, but I would pay 70$ for BOTW on sale. IMO Zelda is worth it, God of War is not. People will make their own choice.

    for me, digital games aren't worth it. Switch games hold their value most of the times and easy to sell once you're done.

      Also it’s less likely this way to build another backlog that i will rarely get to play like I already have on ps4 and steam.

      Buy one game, play it, sell it. Rinse and repeat.

        I’m learning from my mistakes in the past too. Digital games are great for convenience in a portable system but become worthless rapidly. If only Nintendo took a leaf out of Microsoft’s book and made their games compatible in some way with future platforms and automatically transferring over.

        That being said I still have bought a few games I intend to have with me all the time like Mario kart so I don’t need to fumble around with cartridges all the time.

      Have you sold a lot of your old Switch games to be able to make a claim like that, out of curiosity? I bought a Switch recently, haven't tried to sell the two games I have atm (BoTW and Dark Souls). Haven't owned a Nintendo console for a while so kind of new to the whole reselling of used Switch games, but people are saying the same thing in this thread..

      I was going to go mainly physical games at the start but then the convenience of digital games and not having to swap cartridges is very convenient, but then not being able to sell digital games could be an issue if I want to sell my games in the future (big if).
