People still get (computer) viruses these days? Just use the Windows one.

    • -7

Windows Defender is a terrible anti-virus for any serious threat.

      • -1

If someone is dumb enough to click random links, they deserve it.

        • -4

Uhhhh no… sometimes it's completely out of your control. i.e someone else is dumb on your network and clicks a link and the malware spreads to every device on the network.

          • @KARMAAA:

the malware spreads to every device on the network

Do I also need to buy some Google Play cards to fix this issue?

            • @askbargain: Apparently you've never done any real systems admin work where this frequently happens. But continue to profess how Windows Defender is enough and that people are stupid for clicking what looks to be legitimate links.

Apparently you've never done any real systems admin work where this frequently happens.

Okay. I just downloaded one malware. Why hasn't it spread to other Optus customers? If it's a "real systems admin work", why are they using a household product?

                • @askbargain:

Okay. I just downloaded one malware. Why hasn't it spread to other Optus customers?

This is laughably the most funny thing I've ever heard. Way to stretch what I said out of proportion. There's multiple network sizes… A network can be as simple as two PC's. Doesn't mean it spreads to everyone on the Optus network…

If it's a "real systems admin work", why are they using a household product?

Because systems admins buy commercial products too. Systems admins don't make the product, simply implement them and make sure they work as intended. So yes, some businesses use Malwarebytes or Norton or something like CrowdStrike's Falcon. It depends on the business. There are enterprise versions of Malwarebytes, but the virus signature detection is largely the same as the consumer version. If you had any knowledge at all, you'd know that. All the Enterprise version gives you is multiple licenses at a cheaper price to install on multiple machines, as well as better support in the event there is amassive problem.

Windows Defender is terrible for detection. On average it will only detect 85% of day-zero threats, which is pretty terrible for keeping a network or even a simple PC secure. Malwarebytes will do much better at around 96-97% of day-zero threats, meaning a mostly clean machine.

Educate yourself before professing such non-sense and listen to those who know their stuff in the field. (mod: removed personal attack)

Still a network. You just proved that it doesn't necessarily spread it all cases. If a network admin cares about it, they would implement proper firewalls.

Because systems admins buy commercial products too.

Do you know what site you are on? System admins don't care about prices :). Enterprise networks use enterprise software. Some networks use Microsoft Defender ATP which is basically Windows Defender.

On average it will only detect 85% of day-zero threats

                    Nice fake stats. https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-10…

@askbargain: Firstly, firewalls wont save you in ever case. If that were true, WannaCry wouldn't be so bad as it was. Each malware is different.

Any serious person wouldn't use Windows Defender ATP to defend an enterprise. In fact most Enterprises use multiple solutions. But even then it's still not enough.

Third of all, Windows Defender is terrible. AV Test as a website is a total joke of a website. Their test is highly flawed and uses some of the most generic malware.

Here's a better test which uses far more evasive malware: https://youtu.be/sE-xdb9hTqY

If you think cascading windows is nice and scans filled with malware. Be my guest. I wouldn't touch Windows Defender with a ten foot pole. It's the equivalent of having sexual relations with an AIDS Patient with a broken condom

                        WannaCry

If you actually knew about WannaCry, you would have known that Windows already had a security update in place before the attack.

LOL. Why don't you look at his other video. Why would you even watch someone's video who only links to products with affiliate links.

                      • @KARMAAA: You'll have to be more specific - please tell us which AV-Test tests are flawed and why. Day 0 is hardly "generic" malware but throw us a bone and list the malware they do and don't use. I'd like to pass on your expert advice so they can update their testing regime, or at the least give them a chance to rebut your claims. After that you can expand on why in your opinion the website is a "total joke". The whole website or just the parts which suggest your numbers are flawed?

Here's a general statement of their bona fides:https://www.av-test.org/en/about-the-institute/test-procedures/ Throw yours up for comparison.

Do you have links to better, credible independent test sites?

                    @KARMAAA:

                    or something like CrowdStrike's Falcon

While I'm no cybersecurity expert, isn't that the same company that got caught creating false flags relating to threats from Russian hackers so that they can then market their own products? If that's the same mob, I'd be avoiding them. You could search the web for "crowdstrike exposed" or "crowdstrike hoax" to read about it because it's actually quite interesting. They're totally untrustworthy.

AV-Test doesn't agree. Both AV-Test and AV Comparatices show Win Defender has improved markedly.

Interested in seeing your credible, independent test results for Malwarebytes.

  • Poor value imo. Kaspersky is still one of the kings and is very affordable at SaveOnIt. KIS 3 devices 2 years is regularly available for about $20.

    Two useful sites:
https://www.av-comparatives.org/comparison/ - click on the second column for various tests.

AV-Test also has charts but they appear to have dropped off their testing - eg no rating for malware removal unless I missed it???

My favourite way to re-up this subscription is by purchasing it in Brazilian Reals as per this old deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/306077 - about $30AUD for 2 years.

    • Massive thanks just got 2 x 2 year for $26 AUD $17.41 USD

Step 1. Storage in the cloud or disconnected drives, image PC when happy with your setup.
    Got malware?
Step 2. Restore image!, get latest updates, image PC when happy.
Step 3. If storage gets malware then install and run free malware bytes.
Step 4. Refer to step 2.
Step 5. If steps 1-4 fail you then remove PC from life and move on.

    • If you have got plenty time to make an image, then restore an image. What a waste time.
Step 2 u should run good antivirus to clean the malware. If you get ransomware, then you can restore your image

    • That sounds like a silly way to protect from viruses and ransom ware

  • Kaspersky still has free version. So save your monies.

  • I liked malware for blocking bad IP's on Utorrent not sure any others do that. When it expired went back to free MB and more VPN use.
$6.50 a year for a sense of security

  • Students should use this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/463052

Just be aware that this will no longer play nicely with Kaspersky products. Seems to be a few issues with version 4. Suggest you read the malwarebytes forums before committing.

Hmm, I must have been on older plan as mine is $29.95/yr for 3 devices, without using any VPN.

  • So this deal is still valid:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/463052

Get a edu email address for $3 on Ebay, then up to 5 devices for $8 each for 4 years. Hard to beat that…

  • Malware bytes would not be on my list for consideration. From the tests, they seem to be lacking behind.

    • The link I posted last night is more relevant as it's up to date.

      • sorry, I posted the wrong one. I was after your one. Good job in posting it.
