Affinity Photo, Designer, Publisher (Mac or PC) $54.99 Each (Were $79.99) @ Serif

620

Damn! Jumped on the Microsoft Store deal for these but now wish I'd waited.

Almost as capable as the corresponding Adobe products, for my needs, but with a perpetual licensed at a fraction of the price.

Apparently everything else on the site is 30% off also.

Any idea on how many times I can install this? I have a few computers. Adobe has a cap of two computers using it at once. I couldn't seem to find this info when I looked

    • +2

As I understand it, you can install on any computers you own as long as only one of them is being used for commercial purposes at any time. See EULA here: https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/licence/

      • Adobe lets you use two at the same time, fwiw, and i believe lets you install on as many machines as you like (it'll automatically log out of one of the other machines to make space).

        • +1

You can have Adobe CC activated (usable) on two machines but you're only allowed to use one at a time.

Unlimited. Windows store version (lol) has a limit of 5 iirc.

  • Anyone know if the licenses are cross-platform? Looking to upgrade system in the next few months. Thinking to a Surface device given the lack of innovation of MacBooks over the years.

How many computers can I install a digital product on?
Serif Software is platform specific. If you wish to use Serif Software on both Mac and Windows platforms, you must purchase a license for each.

Sad. Adobe lets you install on a Mac and/or PC for the same price.

        • +3

For the fine price of Affinity's RRP per month haha. It is a nice perk for sure, but the price difference is insane.

      • Thanks. Shame. Looks like I'll give it a pass.

    • Have you looked into SideCar…. (using an iPad as a graphics tablet wirelessly for your Mac) Might get you the control that you want without having to deal with Windows…

      • I have the original Retina MacBook Pro. So it's not SideCar compatible. Also, I don't actually mind Windows…

Affinity Photo was cheaper in October- $38.99 through ePhotozine (50% off).
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/488146

Tempted to wait as they may all drop to 50% off, so in between gonna download the free trial versions and give them a try out.

Can’t recommend this software enough, been using professionally as graphic designer for 5 years now, haven’t been back to PS since. Installs on 10+ Mac computers as part of Apple Store licence

    • Would you recommend getting the books if new to the software?

      • Maybe, since I’ve used PS for years it was easy to switch over to Affinity. Perhaps YouTube tutorials first. I learnt Blender and Unity all from Youtube and they are hard programs to learn

      • A lot of books arent worth it imo, just watching youtube videos and reading blog guides will get you most of the way.

    • Any use for both the entire Adobe suite and Affinity, other than the iOS apps? The entire adobe suite comes with things like After Effects and Premiere.

      • I use FCP daily, it’s better than when it first came out. Use Motion too sometimes but After Effects is pretty damn good

  • Thanks for this.

  • Was literally going to buy this tonight. Talk about timing! Thanks

Been waiting for this to go on sale, thanks

  • How does this compare with Lightroom for ipad?

  • Anyone who does design is crazy not to buy this. So much cheaper than Photoshop. Not quite there yet (plugin incompatibility, etc) but a few more years and this will be smashing Adobe.

    • Adobe is only 22 a month if you can find a student. Still pricey I guess.

      • Please don't just go and find a student. The AFP will want a word with you if you do.

  • Anyone know how to link affinity photo bought from their website to affinity designer and publisher bought on Mac apps?

  • +1

Thanks, now got the full suite. Just wish they had an equivalent to Acrobat pro.

  • If I get this, can I use it on windows and iPad with a single purchase?

    • No. iOS version is separate but also on sale.

  • These are yearly licence fees for the softwares, or One-off fee?

    • +1

      once off

      • +1

That's ridiculously cheap for a perpetual licence. I'm going to try it out.

Edit: I mean, Adobe inflated their prices so absurdly high because they had the market by its balls, so I guess comparatively, this is ridiculously cheap.

Also for those who have also used Corel's suite, how does this compare?

  • Is any new version coming out ? I mean do they charge for newer version every year? Or we get updates for certain number of years ?

    • +1

From memory, all updates will be free until 2.0

    • +1

Both Photo & Designer are 5 years old now, Publisher was only released in June this year.
As a guess, I reckon versions 2 will be released last quarter of 2020.

Sell version 1 at a 30% discount > give new users a year to familiarise themselves with the software > bring out version 2 late 2020 > 30% discount recouped in customers paying to upgrade to v2.

      Still worth buying….screw Adobe.

Everyone should support what Serif are doing (and Davinci).

Adobe is out of control and their business practices are despicable. Creatives are locked into rolling 12-month contracts with heavy penalty for reducing the number of licenses.

Support these other players in the market. We'll be cutting our Adobe CC licenses heavily.

    • I sort of agree, but Blackmagic isn't exactly a saint. They've screwed their customers over a few times with "suprise" releases and "supply chain issues". Still they're the only Australian camera company so gotta support them somewhat.

      • +1

Absolutely. All we can hope for is enough competition in this space that we limit the amount of a$$hole.

  • Is Affinity Photo easy to learn/use for a total beginner?
Never done any editing before, have always wanted to however with the subscription fee of Lightroom it just put me off because I don't want to spend that money when I'm just really not good at it and need a while to practise.

    • I learned Adobe Photoshop before switching to Affinity Photo so I don't think I'm in the position to say if it's easy to learn for a total beginner. However, Serif (Affinity) provides free video tutorials on their website, there are also lots of YouTube videos and an official workbook for Affinity Photo if you want to do exercises and practice.
