Cheapest localstock 5g phone at the moment

  • +1

Not sure if this has been answered but will 5G work with Boost?

    • nope

      • Why not? if this uses telstra, it should work on the 5g band.

        • Boost won't be getting Telstra's 5G anytime soon. it will be a Telstra exclusive for at least a year before the resellers can start using it.

  • +2

wtf,it was like $1500 just 3 months ago

    • +2

wasn't worth it at that price tho.

But i do agree, i would be pissed if i purchased when they first launched xiaomi there

Is that ram correct? I've got 8gb on my non 5g mix

      • +1

There are different variants of this phone from what I know.

  • +1

Can anyone confirm whether the 5g model being sold locally is dual sim or not?

    • +2

it's single sim even the grey imports are single sim that's what been stopping me from getting this phone

  • +1

This phone is $199 from JB if you take a $65 plan on Telstra

    • +1

Potentially another deal of the century likev the P30 at Mothers day.

Dont forget to get the port in credit from Telstra and change to a Telstra plan with POM with 24x7 after you sign up.

      • +1

What was the P30 mothers day deal?

        • +1

          this one:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/454635

phone is free (thanks to Huawei $200 gift card promotion) 12 month contract…..

Many get the port in credit and change from JB 65 plan to Telstra 69 plan which at the time was selling for $59 and with port in credit the plan become $49 with POM Data.

In Short free phone for and $49 plan for 12 months.

          • +1

@syswong: Ok i see, it was the P30 and not the P30 PRO.

    • +1

I wish people would stop mentioning this "deal". Many phones are "free" when taking on a contract, you still pay via the contract.

      • +1

Yeah but the P30 at the time was going for $900 outright. The contract was for $49 (after discount) / month for 12 months only.

I am not greedy, please tell me where can i score a free phone today that worth at least $700 and the total contract commitment is on only $600 which give me unlimited call and text with 50G data to use and no extra charge for excess data (POM).

Don't even try, it doesn't exist…. it was all about timing and luck!!

Since we are on the topic, I wonder how JB makes their profit, when all telco now bascically moved away from subsidizing handsets… I mean look at this Xiaomi deal, you pay $200 for a SD855 phone and only pay arounnd $50 (depends on your luck with 24/7) for a medium plan. I am speechless !!

    • -1

For $199 or whatever deal, you will get stuck for 2 years.
With a contract, nothing is yours. Stop paying or do weird sh1t and you will have to pay the mobile back.
Contracts are for low budge payroll people or those who don't care if at the end they will end paying twice as much as long as they can have the latest model.

That doesn't seem to be a wise decision when you can spend a little bit more, own the phone and be free.

Note killer, except for the battery, the spen, storage, camera right?

    • +1

I prefer the mix camera. Battery seems about the same, and is argue I use my mix more than my partner.

      • +2

My short time with the mix 3 was mixed with fun and frustration. There were so many bugs on the software, sacrifice too much compared to flagships. Isn't even waterproof. And no, in my experience the battery life was very average. It's a decent deal at this price, I would still go note 10 for a tiny bit more. 3 lenses on note is fantastic.

        • +2

          $300 isn't really a tiny bit more.

          • -1

@xmail: Closer to $200. Difference between a flagship and a Xiaomi though. So many extra features, like stereo speakers, waterproofing etc.

        • +1

Which ROM were you using? I'm using the Chinese ROM and can't say I've experienced any noticeable bugs.

Extra lens on camera would be nice

      • +1

Can I ask what phone you used to have?
Thinking about this phone for my wife, she’s not happy with the camera quality of her OPPO and said her old Sony took better photos.

  • +1

Bought it last week for $699. Would JB HiFi provide refund on price difference?

    • +1

If bought on credit card with insurance you can claim it back

      • +2

I was able to get refund from JB HiFi. No question was asked.

        • +1

That’s good news. Did you go in store and just ask?

          • +2

@PVA: Yes and just asked cashier who did on the spot

    • Not sure if others stores do the same tho.
Bought my QLED TV last year before the Boxing Day there with almost $1k off and they told me that "if you buy now and it is cheaper during Boxing Day, come back to have refund".

The price kept the same tho.

  • +1

    When is this sale ending?

  • +3

As far as I can tell, this doesn't have Widevine L1, limiting any DRM video (Netflix, etc) to 540p. Keen to be proven wrong, but that might be a deal breaker.

    • +1

      How do I check?

      • +2

If you have one (5G model), there is a "DRM Info" app on the play store that tells you if it has Widevine L1 or L3. L1 is required for HD, L3 is insufficient.

Would be a massive shame to have an HDR AMOLED screen and be unable to make use of it.

        • +2

          Yep, confirmed L3.
          Damn

          • +1

@Salmando: Apparently there are modified APKs that can circumvent this issue, but that's never ideal. If you already have it, that might be a solution.

I had the chance to try one in JB today and it definitely felt chunky.

            • +1

@Erwark: It's heavy af with the ceramic glass

            • +1

@Erwark: I wonder why it would be L3, just checked my old LG V20 and it’s L1.

Is there a cost involved and the maker doesn’t want it? Is it able to be updated in the future or is it more a hardware thing?

              • @PVA: Apparently it's free, but they have to apply and and wait for certification. It used to be a premium-phone thing, but L1 seems to be more and more common as screens get better. All a little strange and the variance between different regions just muddies the water.

This or an eBay Xiaomi 9T Pro for ~$530? Or an ancient LG V30+ for $399?

    • Ended up getting this, wanted a future proof phone if it survives till 5g is mainline.

    • I've cancelled my order and brought the Xiaomi 9T Pro, will be a while until 5G is more mainline and the coverage is very limited basically to the CBD's.

      • Also went with the 9T pro. The LG V40 has better res, build quality, local support, lighter, sd card etc.. however - it's last years phone and slower CPU. The lack of updates and slow CPU is the thing that bothers me the most with older phones.

  • +1

Seems ok, but a review I just read said it has adverts built in.

“ Trial number two comes in the form of third-party ads every time you install a new app. The Mi Mix 3 5G scans them for viruses, totally interrupting whatever you happen to be doing in the process, and does so with adverts.”

    • +1

I think this is easily turned off, as it doesn't happen to me - but I feel I remember the virus scan happening in the past, though not with ads. Also remember something about ads only appearing if you select USA as the region?

      • +1

        That’s good to know.
The review was Australian / UK as they were the only two countries selling it.

  • Just got JB to pricematch catch @ $526.24:)
