That's correct, but the new one hasn't been released here yet

      • Is the upgrade worth waiting for? Just having a cursory glance, doesn't seem all that much different.

Honestly I'm not super fussed about the new one, this one will suit my needs fine

@DianaOfAmazonia: Yeah I'm definitely considering this myself but the ozbarhainer in me wants to wait just Inc ase it does drop down again….

          • @DianaOfAmazonia: If you've never used the remote on this model before think twice! It for me was mind-numbingly bad. It made using the shield such a bad user experience and I spent months looking for an alternative remote to only be further frustrated.

I recommend the new model for remote and AI 4k upscaling.

            • @Vietsoldier: I've got a mi box 3 , but barely used the remote as my TV was compatible for controlling it. I've now upgraded to a harmony universal remote so I'm not sure if it's going to be a factor in all honesty.

The modern vintage gamer ran some tests on YouTube and said if you already have the old one stick with it. On his testing performance didn't look that much different.

        • The new Shield has:

          • Dolby Vision and Atmos (for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ etc)
          • AI upscaling
          • New remote (Motion-activated, backlit buttons, user-customisable button, IR control for your TV, built-in lost remote locator, uses AAA batteries, dedicated Netflix button)
          • Faster SoC
          • New "Match content frame rate" feature
          • Plex has been updated to include Dolby Vision (can already passthrough Atmos), and can use the AI upscaling too

Saying that, the 2015 / 2017 Shields should be getting the "Match content frame rate" feature (which is nice, but it can already do auto frame rate matching using the Refresh Rate tool below), and Dolby Vision on some apps (it's coming to Disney+, but won't be available on Netflix AFAIK):

        • I just got the new one from B H Photo for $199USD + $25 delivery, it was here in five (working) days and the total AUD on 28 Degrees MC was $329.32

  • Could have bought this a week ago for 238 with controller

Doesn't cut it for Black Friday

  • To me, the remote can make or break your viewing experience. The touch volume on this remote was so frustrating and laggy to use. And occasionally it wouldn't 'wake up' to respond to volume touches, so you're pressing various buttons trying to get the thing to respond.
Before I sold my old Shield, I went back to using my TV remote to control the Shield. The TV remote was a piece of crap but at least it had physical volume buttons.

  • Looking for a controller!

  • Picked up the G20 remote on eBay for $17 a few months back. I find it heaps better than the remote that shipped with the 2017 Shield TV.

In my circumstance ( and opinion ), the new Shield TV isn't worth the upgrade. I have a 7.1 speaker set up ( but not Atmos ) and my Sony TV does an excellent job of upscaling.
