Not bad for $200. Thanks for the post! +ve.

  • The same question anyway to unlock it and upgrade it to 2.3?

    • I read that HTC will not be bringing 2.3 to the Legend, so officially we're stuck on 2.2.
The only way out would be to root it with a custom rom.

      • This is an awesome deal. Only thing to be aware of if you want 2.3 is that this seems to be one of the hardest phones in the world to root. Z4root etc, do not work; And the guides etc, although detailed, still don't really seem to work.

        • I've just rooted my phone with 2.3.3 CyanogenMod7 using the very helpful Unlockr.com guide for the Legend.

All in all, it took 3 hours of time total. Since Cyanogenmod uses the stock Android interface, there's no shiny HTC Sense UI, but the phone is much much faster and responsive because of it. Aside from 1 or 2 steps needing a little modifying, it's hard to do anything wrong if you follow the instructions carefully.

If you like the HTC SenseUI and can live with the slowdown at times (Turn on USB debugging to reduce much of the lag), then I wouldn't recommend rooting the device. However, if you are like me and cannot live with the lag, or wish to use root apps, then it's worth the trouble in the end.

And if you want to root without any effort? Don't buy this phone.

          Enjoy :)

good to know my phone is still worth $200.

p.s. this is a good phone, recommended.

    • this is a terrible phone! i really do not recommend it.

      • :o Why's this phone terrible?
With my indecisiveness, I probably wont get a new phone till Im 80 >.<

        • it's a great phone, will do pretty much anything you need a smart phone to do. BUY BUY BUY!

The Huawei Sonic for $188 from Dick Smith will run faster and smoother since it comes with Android v2.3. It also has a larger screen. The Legend won't be updated past v2.2.

But if you want a phone with a decent camera, get the Legend. The camera on the Sonic is pretty crap.

Nice phone, and good to see it still has value (got mine on the voda pricing mistake from here :P)

It is on it's way out in terms of dev support on XDA however.

  • gorilla glass…awesome

Also note moneybackco 3% which means $194

    • +2

      gorilla glass…awesome

Made from 100% real gorillas! :)

  • Ooh, nice! I'm almost tempted to replace my Ideos with this (I really do need a much higher res screen) but I might wait for the HTC Desire to come down

    • "320 x 480 pixels"

Not much better on this phone either, so in that case, probably best to wait for the Desire.

      • Its slightly better but yeah, hardly comparable to the iPhone 4G

        • +7

what does the iPhone 4 have to do with a phone that cost at least 3 times as less?

In that case the Sensation has a qHD screen which blows the apple screen out of the water

        • +1

Lol actually the sensations qHD screen doesn't even beat the iPhone 4's screen

          It's 540x960
          iPhone 4 is 640x960.

Hard to believe it stil has the best screen over a year on!

        • each to their own but i like the SAMOLED screen better. res isn't everything

If it's a Vodafone-branded handset, it should be free to unlock at vodafone.com.au/unlock. You can get them to check before you buy it - just plug the IMEI into that website and see if it asks for a credit card before giving you the unlock code.

    • Is that mean have to pay for it? The site said get CC ready.

      • It should be free as RRP ($350) is over $200, the 'cutoff' for free-to-unlock devices. I just recommend checking before you buy it if it's important to you. When you put the IMEI in it either asks for a credit card or gives you the unlock code straight out.

    • I unlocked my Vodafone HTC legend without a CC, it seems to just read the IMEI and provide you with an unlock code.

    • I dont think so. The HTC bought for postpaid are not hard locked and free to unlock, as you are bound with vondafone for 12 or 24 months.
For Prepaids, they are locked and Vodafone charges to unlock.
So better confirm first with Vodafone.

      • +1

Bought one of these after seeing the deal and I can confirm it IS free to unlock if you input the IMEI number on the Vodafone website. Vodafone also confirmed that the Legend is on soft lock and not hard lock so you can get the unlock code for free. Go for gold, guys!

My new UHF handset beats this

  • +1

would a crazy johns sim work as its vodafone?

    • yes

  • awesome phone at an awesome price. i remember when it used to be $350 outright just a couple months ago.

    • +1

Yes it does. That offer is not available and this one is. Don't ever expect to see that old mistake be offered and honored again.

    • that deal requires the use of the voda network to be good……this deal is better for me

  • really good phone! got it a while back on that crazy 12 month voda deal (see above!)

very good value for the price and android 2.2 is just fine for me, dont really need the 2.3 upgrade imo but you can always root the phone and flash a custom rom if you like because it is well supported!

free to unlock the phone as well (just give your IMEI code to any phone assistant)

  • Great phone, the model may be outdated and not up to par in specs compare to current generation of android phones. It is a steal at this price.

  • Camera Primary 5 MP, 2592 x 1944 pixels, autofocus, LED flash, check quality

I think is better than sonic, how is the quality? Is it OK to do skype video call?

    • No Skype video calls, but it is better than Sonic.

    • Yes, the Legend has a better camera.

It depends on what you're priorites/needs are for the phone. I don't have much need for a phone camera and would rather have the Sonic with larger screen and running Android v2.3.

Android v2.3 runs better on lower-end hardware compared to v2.2. Since both the Sonic and Legend have very similar CPUs it's likely that the Sonic will run smoother and faster. Battery life is also significantly improved with v2.3.

But others will have different priorities and the Legend may suit them better.

Most of the reviews regarding the Sonic have been generally very positive, with good battery life and the phone is quick.

  • I'm on 3 at the moment, I assume that I would have to get this unlocked?

    • +1

If you go to a Voda store with the phone and the 3 sim, they'll unlock it for you on the spot.

    • +1

You may not need to unlock. My 3 SIM worked on my locked Legend from Vodaphone.

  • My HTC Legend still V2.1 how to update to 2.2 and make it as Wifi hotspot (AP), I am not using it much as this phone is purchase for my partner. If someone give the link or instruction would be great. Thanks :)

  • This might be cheap but as the comments above already mentioned, it's very difficult to root. The phone itself is very well built but extremely slow and laggy compared to my stock HTC Desire on 2.2 so just wait for the Desire to drop.

    vodafone…………….

    • I agree but that doesn't make the deal bad

    • +1

how about learning to read the really smart comments/tips provided by other members and stop making stupid dumb comments that waste ozbargain's bandwidth, waste our time and energy and embarrassing this website with your ignorance?

  • I am assuming that this is the 900/2100 version, which means it can't use Vodafone's fancy new 850 network.

    • yeap, correcto. Its listed as 2100/900 on Dicko's website.

  • +2

Bought this phone today. Can confirm it is very easy to unlock, just go to vodafone.com.au/unlock
    There is no fee
Inside the box is a 2GB MicroSD card

  • bought one.. thanks op.. =)

  • Does anyone know if this phone is next g compatible?

    • +1

      No, it's HSDPA 900 / 2100 MHz.

      Next G is 850 MHz.

  • There seems to no option to buy online now. Its showing in store only. Too bad cant use 30$ off voucher.what a shame. Still its a fantastic deal.

  • OUT OF STOCK online. :(

  • Out of Stock Online, but some stores are apparently getting additional stock in…if out.

  • Got the my local store's last one. Can confirm with the other posters that the unlock is painlessly easy with no fee. Phone seems excellent so far, highly recommended.

  • I unlocked mine without any fuss through the vodafone website

  • Is there Vodafone branding on the phone itself? I'm waiting for mine to come in the mail.

    • No there is no physical tags or marks or even software that I have found.

  • It took about 2 mins in all to unlock on the website, no branding or voda software with my phone.

  • +1

Thanks to 007, bought the phone from bigw (they price matched DSE). Unlocked straight away. Mine came with 2.2.

    • Wow, I never knew BIG W price matched! Is that a first?

      • yeah they do pricematch

      • Yes 1st time for me too with bigw.

I went to top ryde mall after calling DSE there for stock. Just went to bigw first some minor buy and saw this. Asked the girl over the counter will they match price for 199$ (from 349$) as DSE sells for that. She called the manager via local phone and gave me immediately for 199$ !

  • They have it again for $199 but I cannot create a new post for it because of the link is duplicated.
