Hi, this is a pretty decent price drop on this tablet. I have the 256GB version I purchased earlier this year for about $700 ish (I think it was $730). I love it, screen is amazing, performance is great. My only issue is the facial recognition to unlock. It's a bit hit and miss. It did improve a bit after the Android Pie update for some reason, but I still don't like it and prefer to type in my pin number instead most times. Don't forget cash back for ~$20 back.

I've just realised that this is just price matching the good guys ebay when using 20% off. But you need to pay for postage and from my experience their shipping is not great, they take ages to dispatch items, but it arrives quickly once shipped.

    Here is the ebay link:

Actually got it from ebay cos I had three hundred dollars worth of vouchers. Ebay delivery Will take longer to get here.
If I brought from Amazon, it could have been sooner. Anyways….
      Thank you

        You're welcome!

Amazon one says won't arrive till Monday anyways. I'm hoping that will not be the case but it hasn't shipped yet.

Great tablet the screen is really nice.

    • Is it good for drawing and as laptop replacement?

    • Would be even better if a Google assistant ambient mode APK was available

      https://www.mobileciti.com.au/samsung-pogo-charging-dock-wit…

    • It still seems expensive for 2-3 year old tech though…

      • +2

The tablet is only 16 months since release

        • You're right, my mistake. I was doing a bit of research before and for some reason had it in my head that it was older.

I'm also looking for a tablet, so we get some cashback here.

    • With shopback it's 4.5% ($21.56), not sure what cash rewards rates are. I ended up purchasing one for my mum (I already have one).

      • just noticed they don't have the S5E. Also thinking to get for my mom but it will be used just for videos. Just wondering if it is a bit over kill to get the S4? I don't have it myself haha

        • +9

S5E I believe is a little bit worse than S4 in terms of performance (I may be wrong). I got this tablet just for general browsing/shopping and videos. It is a bit overkill, but I'm glad I got this. I previously purchased some cheaper tablets ~$200ish and they both annoyed me after a while, just laggy and slow with apps and opening Web pages. If you can afford to splurge a bit of money then I would advise going for a higher end tablet like this even if it is only for media consumption, it's just a pleasure to use.

Edit: The S4 definitely outperforms the S5e (snapdragon 835 vs 670).

@Shaun Prawn: Thanks for personal feedback and view on this. I might getting it. Better to spend a bit more for the experience.

EDIT - thanks OP bought it!

I never wanted a tablet, won this one from a McDonald's comp and am using it everyday, was also great for travelling.

    • Holy cow! I had no idea people actually won from those comps.

Most people just win higher cholesterol lol

I bought a 2019 iPad and I regretted it. I'm not sure this one is better or not, but definitely I'm not a fan of Apple

    • +5

I've bought one and was given one ipad back then. Since then I've never used apple products.

      • I unboxed it already, cannot return unfortunately :(

        • @ntt sell it with some % off and buy another tablet. Since it's brand new you won't find problems to sell it.

  • +3

Wow, a better price than the 5e!

    • +1

What was funny was I was looking at the price of the 5e yesterday and today the S4 is was cheaper

  • +4

Bear in mind that Tab S4 is probably the last one in the line to have headphone jack ……

    • That's because the S5E & S6 are physically too thin to house the headphone jack

      • +3

Not so sure about that. Thin yes, but they could easily still have a headphone jack if they wanted.

Companies are pushing people towards bluetooth for varies possible reasons.

      • I have the s6 and didn't even notice it's missing the headphone jack

    • Later models may use usb to headset adaptor

  • +1

This should be up gradable to Android 10 next year most likely I'd say as the Tab S3 got Pie?

    • +2

Yeh I read something recently saying it would be getting Android 10 at some stage. It took quite a while to get pie, so it might be a fair way off.

  • Will this get any cheaper? Boxing day maybe?

Jokes aside, I honestly don't know but I'm inclined to say no. It's been sitting around $550-$600 lately. I just can't see it going any lower than this. And when the goodguys ebay sale ends (tomorrow night 11:59pm) amazon will no doubt put it back up to ~$598.

    • +5

Would not count on it. Great price already.

      • Yeah anytime you can get a product less than half its price from when it first came out, wouldn't think it can drop too much more than that.

    • +1

      Cheers Fellas.

Pulled the trigger on the grey one from TGG ebay site.

Amazon doesn't have the grey one on sale.

  • Can you use full blown office 365 on this with Dex?

    • You can but I have not tried. I just use as a media device, browsing/shopping/watching YouTube. Info I have read has said that if you want a tablet for work stuff like that, then apple is the go to because the apps are more optimised for that sort of stuff. But that could have just been pro apple/anti android writers. I personally can't stand apple products and the brand itself, but they may well be better suited to work stuff. If I wanted a device for work I would not be purchasing a tablet though. I would buy a laptop or possibly a surface Pro if I needed the touch screen.

    • +1

Microsoft Office apps are optimised to work with DeX
There are great users review that approve DeX as "personal computer" as long as you don't expect it to perform like a gaming computer.

  • For the love of God and all that is holy, give me an S5e deal!

    • +3

S4 is more superior than s5e, only the looks are better on s5e.

      • +1

        And the weight.

But as always, the better buy depends on the price.

  • +1

For those who already have any variant of this model, how is the HDMI experience?

I'm planning to buy one for traveling so in case you are in the hotel, you cannot connect it with the TV + travelling router with VPN to access Netflix, Disney+, Popcorn.

    Has anyone tried this?

    • +1

Yep have tried that I think it uses a hdmi to usb c dongle. Used it in Bali for netflix a year ago was great.

  • Pen work with this? I'm looking for a solution for using OneNote, browsing, and video playback.

    • S pen is included. I haven't used it but so can't comment on what it's like.

  • Is the keyboard cover worth it for $120?

  • Using it only for OneNote (with stylus), browsing and videos which would be better, this or the Surface Go?

  • +3

My S2 Tablet is still going strong, just thought I'd throw that out there! Wish it was failing, so I had an excuse to buy this. The premium range of Samsung Tablets must be pretty decent I reckon.

  • This or the Surface GO 8GB?

  • I would pay a bit more for the new ipad 10.2

  • +1

    Ordered one. Thanks.

  • How's the return policy on this?

  • Mine arrived today from Amazon :)

  • Any recommendation for a keyboard for this tab? Not wanting the Samsung $200 option. Something decent, less than $50?
    Thank you.

    • +1

I haven't tried any sorry. There are cheap ones on ebay around $35, no idea how good they are but. You can also get the genuine Samsung one for $163 on ebay.

    • All the third party ones are pretty rubbish. I looked into it and ended up with the samsung option though I dont think I paid anywhere near $200 for it.
