Parking Fine for Blocking a Driveway - Seems Unfair

Hi everyone, I have been given a fine for blocking a driveway which I think is marginal and is unfair.

Background:

The station is in North West where public transport is an issue and the closest station has parking issues.

I don't think I was blocking the drive way and had reasonable access.

Any views/comments is appreciated!

Moral of the story … don't park in front of driveways and you won't get fined. Simples.

      • +100

This sh!t happens at my place very frequently. I've no sympathy for you. Pay the fine and (hopefully) learn not to interfere with others' access to their property.

        • @dineshjain How much is the fine btw?
          Pay it.

        • +2

The money from fine should go to neighbour

      • +24

What if I parked over your driveway OP and you only had 'reasonable access'

        Entitled or what?

      • +8

He's right though, you were parked over the driveway. It's not the home owners daily that the parking is crap at the station.

      • +3

Do you think you were being thoughtful when you parked over someone else's driveway? So selfish.

      • Black & white law. No gray areas. Park within the lines or pay the fine. Nothing more, nothing else.

    • +12

What is that white line in the picture for ? Isn't that where the tires have to be parked on ?
P.S. OP: lucky that they did not consider your car abandoned, it clearly looks like one.

      • +19

What is that white line in the picture for ? Isn't that where the tires have to be parked on ?

Nope, your entire car needs to be within the marked lines, not just the tyres.

  • +77

Reasonable…You're supposed to park within the lines

    • +27

I'm not sure if OP realises that the marking on the ground is intended for the whole car and not just the wheels…

      • +15

This. OP posted it as proof they were right whereas it actually proves they are wrong.

          • +16

            @capslock janitor:

My nan lives next to a bunch of Indians they always park like this.

American Indians? Do they drive a Cherokee?

            • -8

              @jv:

              Cherokee?

              No but they have Curry.

              • -2

@capslock janitor: Ok and what exactly do you bring to the table in the terms of civilization and culinary delights? KFC??

                • +8

@ohsotight: I'm saying I see many indian people without common courtesy on our roads (and other things relative to cars)

Not saying all are like that. But being cut in traffic, irresponsible lane changing where the arrows don't allow, throwing out a taxi door smashing my car then acts like nothing happened, parking on a bend and close to intersections, a lot of not giving way, I've noticed they are the majority

              • -1

@capslock janitor: I dont know why you got downvoted for this particular reply (not including your previous comments). But have an upvote for returning the PUN back at the other guy.

          • +5

            @capslock janitor: Indians love naan.

      • +9

Lol, even the wheels are over the line

        • +2

Yeah exactly, the wheel is over the line anyway.

  • +27

I would park with 'whole car' inside the lines (including tow ball)
    .

  • +38

Looks to me like the rear of your car is in the path of the driveway. As annoying as the fine is, looks legitimate

  • +17

Looking at your car you could do with a reversing camera. Learn to park. Nice no plate lol.

    • +10

2001 Camry… wouldn’t a reverse camera triple the value of the car?

    • +6

Looking at the state of the rear of the car I'd say this isn't the first time they've obstructed a driveway

      • My thoughts exactly. This is probably the ONLY time he got caught. A fine well deserved. But I do have a gut feeling that he will commit more parking offences in the future; unintentionally.

  • +19

If it was my place I wouldn’t be too happy about how you are encroaching on the driveway and the tow bar would be an added issue. People are turning out of their driveway so they need the room to swing around. You weren’t a little bit outside the parking bay, you were a whole boot worth; from the picture. If parking is such an issue maybe you need to get a bike to get to the station. Get a bit of exercise as well. My opinion.

  • +7

Lazy parking, you could have moved forward a couple of feet, though I don't think you were blocking the driveway they have painted lines on the road so that the tax collectors don't have to exercise discretion or argue ambiguities and also so that you don't have a defence if you challenge them. C'mon man! It's a bit of paint on the road…who can argue with that?

  • +14

Terrible parking. And your car is a neglected bomb, I wouldn't want that parked in front of my house, looks like a getaway car with all those dings and scrapes and faded numberplate.

    • +10

I Don't think it would get away very far

    • +14

It’s an old 4 cylinder Camry they run forever

      • +2

        Unfortunately.

    • +7

That's rude. Not everyone can afford a nice car.

    • +2

      It's a cheap-to-buy, cheap-to-run, cheap-to-repair, reliable car. It's the perfect ozbargain car.

      • +8

        they're expensive to park though.

  • +22

Hi everyone, I have been given a fine for blocking a driveway which i think is marginal and is un fair.

Just like colouring, its best if you park within in the lines.

Your back wheel was on the line, meaning a good 1m of your car overhanging OUTSIDE the car space.

I don't think I was blocking the drive way and had reasonable access.

Then you would be thinking wrong.

    Pay the fine

  • +19

    Reasonable fine.

  • +11

Looks like they scrapped your bumper really bad whilst trying to manoeuvre out of their driveway. Hope OP has insurance.

  • +4

Where do you live, OP? Just gonna block your driveway and see how unfair you think it is.

  • +4

I thought this is pretty obvious. Why the need for a forum post to validate?

    • +2

Because some people want the world to see their mistakes. I watch DashCamOwners on youtube every month. The amount of drivers who send in videos of themselves doing something illegal is quite surprising.

      • hahaha my wife and I are the same - it's my favourite time of the month, and yet i find myself constantly yelling "WHO WOULD SEND IN A VIDEO OF THEMSELVES DOING THAT?" at the screen

        • I tend to laugh about it and thing "good on you for knowing your stuffed up and sending it in".

      • +1

They also on Twitch every week

  • +9

Pay the fine. Don't do it again.

  • +25

Fine is probably worth the cost of the car

    Hopefully it's lesson learnt

    • +3

That's a very sensible OzB car!

      • Probably got it on the advice of the ozb collective too.

  • +10

Wish I had the people who fined you working in my street - they would reap a fortune in fines.

  • +1

    Reasonable.

  • +11

If you take few more pictures from other angles and wider view, it just show how much you have block other people's drive way.

The fine is reasonable and please don't park like an axxhole.

  • +11

That line is for the rear of the vehicle, not the rear wheels.

  • +3

Yeah, unfortunately not a lot of sympathy, the markings are there to ensure adequate sight lines for vehicles.

  • +10

what did you think the lines were for?

  • +1

Contest the fine if you disagree

  • +5

Where's the poll? I bet you will get 100/100 Pay the fine.
    You're way outside the line.

  • +9

While the fine is for parking over the driveway, the reasons the lines are further from the actual driveway is not just for access, but also for safety. As cars pull out, if you are parked too close it makes it difficult to see around the parked car. So pulling out can be an danger.

  • +4

You deserve the fine; it's fair and justified.

    Thread closed.

  • +10

    Thread re-opened.

    Fine was valid.

    Thread closed.

  • +5

It's unfair for the resident to have to manoeuvre around your car because of your inconsiderate behaviour.

  • +3

Accept responsibility for your selfish and entitled actions ffs

  • +8

Not only did you park inconsiderately, you also caused a 3 hour bender on Imgur for me.

And now my night is done.

    Pay the fine.

  • Do you have a massive 4x4 looking truck with alloy rims chucked in for an extra 5k and complaining about blocking half a drive way trying to get out of a lame rear 22“ rear wheel. Call your barrister or QC for advice.

  • +4

Only new point to add, is you are a true ozbargainer.

    1. a Camry
    2. Push the limits for a ‘bargain’
  • +1

I've seen lines like that a few times, but infrequently. Who would have painted that line, council or the homeowner?

  • +2

Well outside the marked parking space.

    GUILTY….GUILTY….GUILTY…GUILTY…GUILTY…GUILTY

Nothing unfair about this unless the markings moved.

And in future DO NOT obstruct peoples driveway and observe markings on the road.

OMG Its amayzing how many people think the end of thier car is where their tyres sit in the road.

    Back to school for OP

  • +9

I call the council every time some douchebag parks over my driveway like you did with their bum sticking over making it a royal pain to get in and out.

And the council are usually there within 5 mins to fine them.

I also got the council to paint lines (like OP parked over) and it hasn't helped (no surprise).

    • I wish the council were like that out my way.

I've had so many people park over my driveway. I've gone out to confront them and ask them to move only for them to shrug their shoulders and say "I wasn't gone that long." Or "oh well."

  • +3

Selfishness is the only explanation. Justifying it by stating that there's insufficient parking at the station. How about the person who lives there, putting up with selfish people making their morning reverse out of their driveway that much more difficult and unsafe?

The fine is justified. Lack of parking is not the house resident's fault.

  • -1

Had a bloke park like that in front of the driveway. So I reverse out not looking, didn't think anyone would park that close, then bang! Nice long scrape on the corner of his bumper from the bullbar on my Hilux. The owner was down the footpath a little way, after having a quiet word, he decided it was not worth pursuing, obviously.

As for the fine, I'm indifferent about you getting it. Read above, what happened to me. A bumper is more expensive than a fine.

    • +14

So I reverse out not looking

Good thing there were no people on the path.

      • -1

Not looking expecting a car to be parked over the driveway entrance. Footpath was clear… cause I no one got hit.

    • +2

after having a quiet word, he decided it was not worth pursuing, obviously.

If he was insured, he should have pursued it. It was 100% your fault, obviously.

      • -1

He knew he was at fault. My car got damaged too but only the bull bar.

    • +6

You better check out the Specsavers deals.

      • Wasnt there a deal from specsavers on lenses ?

  • +6

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Park legally and this won't happen.

  • +2

I used to live in a street no too dissimilar to this and also have people Park like you have across my driveway. The biggest problem for me was that i unable to swing wide enough to turn into, or out of my driveway without hitting the cars parked like you.

I totally get the parking situation at railways stations BUT i should be able to get into and out of my driveway. If you were nice, i would have let you Park on my front lawn grass each day 🤫

    Pay the fine

    Apologise you the home dweller

Negotiate. It might be in your best interests

  • Did you read your own words prior to posting?

You blocked a driveway…. you blocked a driveway.

You must be a moron if you think this is acceptable behaviour.

You would be complaining if a car blocked the train track — would't you — you hypocrite

  • Pics looks marginal, but seriously - ask yourself if it was your driveway and you had dingbats parking in front of it everyday.
I wouldn't be surprised if you are the type of person who parks blocking pavements as well.

  • +4

The station is in North West where public transport is an issue and the closest station has parking issues.

Would one of those issues would be inconsiderate people parking over driveways?

    • Apparently someone always parks in front of the entrance to the car park, blocking it…

  • +1

    Wow…post got backfired.
Poor OP. Just move on and pay the fine. Learn the lesson the hard way.

Park whole car inside the lines.
Why u parked so far back anyway ? Was there a car in front? If not, then you are naughty and not to be sympathized.

  • -8

Thanks everyone. Appreciate people taking time to comment. From when I parked, there was a car in front and I looked from the kerb side(my first pic), seemed good(I now no it wasn't). Thanks for jumping into conclusions that weren't needed but hey its a free world! Thanks to people who commented with reasons that now gives me clarity of what I did was wrong.

    • +20

Mate you posted asking for opinions - don't get your panties in a bunch when people call you out on being a jerk!

      • +6

        This:

        Any views/comments is appreciated!

        Followed by this:

Thanks for jumping into conclusions that weren't needed but hey its a free world!

Guess OP got offended when he/she didn't get the response they wanted and realised they were in the wrong.

  • +2

isn't the car supposed to be inside the lines?? how is it close?

      • +6

I think that might be the case if there's no lines and there's a sign with an arrow saying no parking from a certain point.

But that's a boxed car spot.
Imagine if there was another car spot behind you, 1/3 of your car would be in his space. That's not right.

      • +4

It's the whole car, only time it's the tyres is for a Formula 1 grid slot. I still think you would have been fine with that distance, (even thought it's marginal) problem is the tow bar is sticking out further which can be a real hazard when they would be reversing out of their driveway. That was probably the deciding factor.

      • …. Which they're not.

Not to mention you're nearly a foot off the gutter making it even harder for anybody to pull out around you.

Mirrors? Eyes? Did you just get out and walk off (running late?). If you parked closer to the gutter and squeezed the wheels in, maybe, just maybe the inspector might have been a bit more lenient.

But, you're way off. Pay it, move on, learn and stop looking for ways to get out of it. You did the wrong thing, and there's nothing wrong with that as long as you learn from it. Just don't go barking back at people for stating what should be the obvious.

      • I was under the impression of the tyres need to be within the line.

yeah no! it is the entire car. The way you have parked is highly dangerous for anyone that has to enter or exit that driveway (hence why the markings are there). definitely a suck it up and learn for future the correct way to park.

  • How much was the fine?
