Keen to go one day, seems to be those months are cool and wet though

    book accommodation first

  • +8

The fancy lodges are closed during those dates it seems. Not so smart to fly out to a holiday beach island in the middle of winter season.

  • +9

Budget at least $300 a night for accommodation. Classic rewards are hard but not impossible to get in the warmer months. I got classic rewards flights in late November.

  • +10

Managed to get 5 nights accommodation for $920 last night - but there is very little left in late August

Make sure you check/book accommodation before you book your flight

    • I could not find less than $1000 a night, which site did you use?

      • I was using Trivago, ended up using Expedia from there

Or you can end up like Tom Hanks talking to his imaginary friend the ball in Castaway.

Bogan question - How is the place better than Bali?

    • +1

I haven't been there myself, only looked into it.

My 2c is the crowd that visits Lord Howe would be looking for something more peaceful, natural, and away from the hustle. I don't believe there are fancy resort chains on Lord Howe.

    • +2

      Because it's not Bali

    • -1

      it ain't.

Oh, you are a bogan? Yes, Lord Howe is the best place to be! The woodhens serve you all the XXXX you can handle, delivered to your Jetski. You never need to sully Bali again :D

    • +2

      less boganss.

  • Why use a peak season price as your comparison

  • +1

why the f*** is everything in australia travel expensive..when syd to hawaii or asian countries can be done for $300

Excessive minimum wage laws + short sighted gov. Probably wrong forum to discuss, but that is the short answer, IMO.

      • +2

If you want lower wages, you're more than welcome to start by offering to decrease your own

        • -3

No, my ignorant commie friend. I legally can't decrease my wage. Besides, the guy asked why… not my fault the answer is inconvenient to you.

        • If you want lower wages, you're more than welcome to start by offering to decrease your own

Or you can just work for the police or ambulance and they lower it for you…

      • User name checks out

    • Because we pay our workers an (arguably) decent minimum wage

      • I don't think Japan and Hawaii minimum wage is that bad…not enough to warrant the price difference.

But in saying that, the high prices can help keep tourism down so it doesn't become like Bali or Venice.

    • Because they have been done already. Do something new!

      • geez…wouldnt you think if local destinations were cheaper then people will travel there instead of travelling to vietnam/thailand and hence get more revenue.
        -__-

e.g why wouuld you pay 1000 for a 3star experience in australia when you can get a 5 star experience in thailand.

        • +1

Because we live in Australia. This country is a 5* experience. Stay in a motel and look around instead.

PSA: always book travel insurance as commonly flights out of Lord Howe regularly get delayed or cancelled due to weather issues which means you may need to stay a few more days……

    • does domestic travel insurance usually cover it?

  • Do sales come up for other major cities to fly direct? I can’t stand flying to Sydney then on to another destination.

  • +2

Did this a few years ago on points. Totally worth it, even though accommodation was $300 a night for a place that would be half that or less on the mainland NSW coast.
